SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A sailboat caught fire Sunday around 2:45 p.m. at Shelter Cove Marina, witnesses say a lithium battery in the navigation panel started the blaze."Saw the smoke, thought it was a barbecue then the kids started screaming on the dock and saw the black smoke and knew it was time to react," Boater and Witness Charlie Colson said. He said he grabbed a hose and was helping the father who was on the boat when the fire started. Getting a boat fire put out quickly is crucial, Witness and Boater Murad Abel said. "There's a lot of electrical equipment, you have batteries, you have fuel, propane, it's all probably within 10 feet of each other," he said.Colson said they had it under control by the time firefighters made it to the scene. "The nine minutes probably seemed like 27 to me, because I was putting the fire out, and I wanted some help, I wanted a professional there," He said chuckling.He said the family had just moved onto the boat last week. Both confirmed the family has a special needs son, adored by the community. "You could literally come back 2 hours later and he's still fishing trying to get fish off the back of the boat, so he's very diligent in that," Abel said.They're hoping insurance covers the damage. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Kearny Mesa couple says a local hawk is preying on neighborhood cats, and hope their story prompts pet owners to be cautious. Over Memorial Day weekend Caralee and Joe Jaeckels took their cats outside to enjoy the garden. Not long after, they said a hawk swooped down. "At first we thought it was kind of cool," they said. "It's this bird flying around. But we discovered pretty quickly that it was not a cool thing."The bird began attacking the couple's cat Ludwick. Thankfully, the 16-pound cat was able to escape with only a scratch on his face. His owners say this probably meant he was too heavy for the hawk to carry him away. 677

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Hillcrest man is still recovering in the hospital after he says he was attacked, leaving him with a head injury and partial paralysis.Ricky Jackle says he was walking with a friend on Robinson Avenue in Hillcrest October 14.“I was out with a friend of mine. Had a few drinks at The Rail.” According to Jackle, that’s when the assault took place.“Last thing I remember, there was a confrontation between the person I was with and somebody else. I tried to get in the middle of it to stop in. I was pushed on my chest, went backwards and hit my head on the curb. Apparently that’s when I bled out. I heard voices, by friend’s voice behind me,” said Jackle.Jackle says after the incident, his friend fled the scene.In tears, Jackle describes how the assault has changed his life. “I can’t work, I can’t do the things I used to do. I’m scared.”“I don’t think anyone should be attacked or a victim like I was, I don’t think it’s right.”While under observation at the hospital, Jackle began to feel numbness in his hands and arms which resulted in loss of movement in his hands, arms and legs, according to a GoFundMe post.“The injury caused swelling which compressed his spinal cord resulting in loss of movment [sic] and some paralysis,” according to the post.Jackle’s cousin, Derrick Roach spoke about the friend who left Jackle following the attack. “He said the reason I left Ricky is with all the blood I thought he was dead. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego commuter is saving big by getting on a bike, but not breaking much of a sweat.It was 6 a.m. on a Tuesday morning, when 10News caught up with Jon Taddeo as he prepared to bike to work.  This ride would be powered by a little something extra, in the form of an electric motor. Taddeo bought an electric bike in October."I feel like a fast biker," said Taddeo.Pedaling more will cause the motor to kick in when he needs it.  For Taddeo, it's a big difference compared to riding a pedal bike."17 miles per hour up a hill.  Before it was four or five miles per hour, huffing and puffing," said Taddeo.That means arriving at work less tired and sweaty.  Long popular in Europe and Asia, e-biking has surged in popularity in the U.S. in the past few years.Taddeo's commute from Carmel Valley to Miramar College took about 30 minutes, only a few minutes slower than his average drive."I feel good.  Blood flowing, refreshed and ready to work," said Taddeo.He also feels pretty good about his savings.  Before, he spent about 0 a month on gas for his commute.  That's now down to pennies, basically the cost of charging the motor battery."It'll definitely go a long way.
