SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Leaders of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor plan to announce Monday whether they will endorse a potential strike by grocery workers at Ralphs, Vons, Albertsons and Pavilions in San Diego County and the rest of Southern California.Raising the threat of the first Southland grocery strike in nearly 16 years, grocery workers last week overwhelmingly authorized their union to call for a work stoppage if a contract agreement cannot be reached.``Southern California grocery workers voted in large numbers, and overwhelmingly rejected the unfair terms that have been proposed by Ralphs, Albertsons and Vons,'' said John Grant, president of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 770.The voting was conducted Monday and Tuesday, Grant said. Albertsons/Vons/Pavilions issued a statement saying, ``The outcome of the strike authorization vote does not change anything related to this process. We remain committed to negotiating a contract that is fair to all parties, including our employees, and will continue to work to achieve that.'' Ralphs issued a similar statement and said, for now, ``it is business as usual in Ralphs stores.''The strike authorization vote means union negotiators have the power to call for a strike, if deemed necessary, but it does not automatically mean a walkout will occur. The next bargaining sessions involving the union and the companies are scheduled for July 10, 11, and 12, Grant said. The contract between the union and the companies expired in March. That pact was approved by workers in 2016 and included annual raises for most workers, along with increased pay for entry-level cashiers and concessions on holiday pay and retirement age, union officials said at the time.On Wednesday, union officials said the most recent contract offer made by the grocery companies included wage increases of less than 1 percent and nearly 25 percent cuts in cashier wages. The labor dispute raises fears of a repeat of the 2003-04 Southland grocery strike that dragged on for 141 days. That work stoppage was estimated by some analysts to have cost the supermarket chains as much as billion, with locked-out workers losing 0 million in wages. 2202

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman who had more than three times the legal blood-alcohol limit when she crashed her SUV head-on into another vehicle while driving her three young daughters through Rancho Bernardo pleaded guilty Friday to felony child abuse and drunk driving charges. Mayra Alejandra Troncoso, 30, had a .29 percent blood-alcohol content when she drove on the wrong side of Camino del Norte on Nov. 12, 2018. Her SUV crashed head-on into an oncoming 2011 Jeep Liberty, causing severe injuries -- including a skull fracture and a brain bleed -- to her 9-month-old daughter, who was riding unrestrained. The defendant's 2-year-old daughter suffered facial injuries and her 8-year-old child broke a bone. The 57-year-old driver of the other car suffered broken bones, authorities said. RELATED: Mother and children injured in wrong way DUI crash in Rancho BernardoTroncoso was arrested the day after the collision at Palomar Medical Center. Prosecutors say that at the time of the crash, she was on probation and driving on a suspended license due to a 2017 North County DUI, in which she also crashed with at least one of her children in the vehicle. Troncoso is slated to be sentenced on Sept. 23. 1211

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A local meal delivery nonprofit began sales Monday for its 15th annual Mama's Pies Thanksgiving Bake Sale, which raises funds to combat hunger among residents with illnesses like cancer and HIV. During the sale, which runs through Nov. 24, residents can order pumpkin, apple, pecan and Dutch apple pies to be delivered Nov. 27, the day before Thanksgiving. Nearly 20 local bakeries and caterers are expected to bake pies for the annual fundraiser and more pie bakers are needed, according to the organization. ``Our annual bake sale is a time-honored tradition that gives community members from around the region an opportunity to give back to our neighbors in need,'' said Mama's Kitchen Executive Director Alberto Cortes. ``Whether you're purchasing a pie, making a donation or volunteering for pie delivery, every hand up counts.'' Mama's Kitchen met its goal of 0,000 raised during last year's bake sale and aims to raise at least 0,000 during this year's six-week sale, which the organization says will fund the delivery of some 51,000 meals for residents with critical illnesses. All proceeds from the sale will directly benefit the organization's services that combat hunger. Volunteers with the AIDS Assistance Fund founded the organization in 1990 to support HIV and AIDS patients. Since then, Mama's Kitchen has expanded its services to more than 1,600 residents countywide who have cancer, congestive heart failure and Type II diabetes and deal with hunger. Residents can order pies for each and volunteer to deliver pies at mamaspies.org. Prospective pie bakers are advised to contact Mama's Kitchen marketing and events coordinator Silvia Dominguez at 619-233-6262, ext. 114 or silvia@mamaskitchen.org. 1751

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Juvenile arrest rates in San Diego County are the lowest they've been in a decade, according to a report released Friday by the San Diego Association of Governments.City and county law enforcement officers made 13.9 juvenile arrests per 1,000 people in 2017, compared to 56.9 arrests per 1,000 people in 2008, more than four times more. However, San Diego County still has the second highest juvenile arrest rate among large counties in Southern California, with San Bernardino County's rate sitting at 16.7 arrests per 1,000 people.SANDAG's Criminal Justice Research Division prepared the report."The juvenile arrest rate comparison continues a 10-year decline," said SANDAG Division Director of Criminal Justice Cynthia Burke. "This trend also has been seen in other jurisdictions across the state and nation."Arrest rates for adults remained steady at 33.5 per 1,000 people from 2016 to 2017. Adult arrest rates have declined since 2008, though, when law enforcement officers arrested 42.8 adults per 1,000 people.Arrests for violent offenses ticked up for both adults, from 13,924 to 14,356, and juveniles, from 1,138 to 1,183. Property-related offenses fell for both demographics, with adult arrests dropping from 8,642 to 7,862 and juvenile arrests dropping from 1,027 to 829."This decline in property-related arrests for adults may be related in-part to Proposition 47 which was passed in 2014 and reduced several property and drug-related offenses from felonies to misdemeanors," Burke said.According to SANDAG, misdemeanor rates spiked in 2015 after the enactment of Proposition 47 while felony rates dropped.Since then, however, felony rates have stabilized at 8.6 per 1,000 for adults and 4 per 1,000 for juveniles while misdemeanor rates have dropped, especially among youth in San Diego County.Adults in their 20s had the highest arrest rate of any age demographic at 60.3 per 1,000 while residents 70 or older were arrested at a rate of 1.7 per 1,000, the lowest of any age range. Residents 70 or older were more likely than their younger counterparts to be arrested for violent offenses, though, according to SANDAG. 2156
