BEIJING, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said on Thursday that China and Germany should join hands to combat trade and investment protectionism.     The premier made the remark during a telephone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in which the two leaders also discussed bilateral ties and other issues of common concern.     Wen said cooperation between China and Germany, both among the world's major economies, is developing smoothly in a variety of fields.     He said the two sides should continue to handle their relations from a strategic and long-term perspective, and keep up high-level exchanges. The two nations, Wen said, also should strengthen communications and coordination to push for a healthy and stable development of their bilateral ties.     China, Wen said, always adheres to a win-win strategy in opening to the outside world and insists on the maintenance of a fair and open market environment. He said China would never discriminate against foreign enterprises or products.     The premier said China's determination to cope with climate change is firm, its operations active, and its measures effective. China, Wen said, is ready to enhance collaboration with Germany in developing new and renewable energy and maximizing energy efficiency.     China also will participate in related negotiations and work with other countries to help bring about positive results at the December UN Conference on Climate Change in Copenhagen, Wen said.     Merkel said Germany is very satisfied with the development of China-Germany relations. She said Germany is ready to work with China to maintain high-level exchanges, strengthen trade and economic cooperation, and oppose trade and investment protectionism.     Germany also is prepared to jointly deal with the challenges brought about by the global financial crisis and advance bilateral ties, she said.     Merkel said she hoped that the two countries would strengthen communications and jointly tackle the issue of climate change.

SEOUL, May 17 (Xinhua) -- South Korean President Lee Myung-bak met Sunday with a group of 20 quake-affected children from China's Sichuan Province, encouraging them to make unremitting efforts to improve and fulfill themselves so as to become useful talented persons in the future.     Under the invitation of the President Lee, 20 children from the earth-quake hit areas visited the presidential office, Cheong Wa DAE, with their 20 friends coming from a South Korean nursery school.     Lee encouraged the quake-affected children to overcome the shock and difficulties.     "We can never loose hope. BEICHUAN, Sichuan, May 10 (Xinhua) -- The quake-devastated Beichuan county seat in southwest China's Sichuan Province reopened Sunday to residents to mourn the dead ahead of the first anniversary of the disaster.     Some 21,000 people, or two-thirds of the county seat's population, were dead or missing in the 8.0-magnitude earthquake on May 12 last year, making the county the worst hit in the quake.     The county will be open for four days till Wednesday.     Mourners brought flowers, incense and candles and set off firecrackers in the ruins of former bus stations, county government buildings and homes. The police distributed bottled water to the crowd for free. BEIJING, May 8 (Xinhua) -- China on Friday honored dozens of military organizations and individuals for their contribution to the nation's quake relief or scientific research work.     President and Chairman of the Central Military Commission Hu Jintao signed a decree awarding merits to 15 organizations and 28 individuals with the People's Liberation Army (PLA).     Three classes of merits were meted out in accordance with the receivers' contribution.     Ten units and individuals were cited for their relief efforts after the 8.0-magnitude earthquake struck southwestern China on May 12 last year, two for "remarkable troop building," five for "achievements in major scientific experiments," two for artist creations and the rest for achievements in scientific researches, according to the decree.     In a separate decree signed by Hu, four other soldiers and officers were awarded honorable titles as being "model examples" for their peers.     One of them, Meng Xiangbin, was given the honor posthumously as he was drowned while trying to save a suicidal woman from a river in eastern Zhejiang Province in 2007.

MOSCOW, May 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo met with Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev on Thursday and the two sides pledged to enhance bilateral cooperation.     Dai said the China-Russia relations enjoy good momentum as the two countries celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties.     China, Dai said, is willing to work with Russia to boost mutual political trust, strengthen pragmatic cooperation and deepen strategic collaboration.     He said China will join hands with Russia in dealing with the global financial crisis and push for a more just and rational international order.     Patrushev, for his part, said the two countries now enjoy close strategic cooperation. He said Moscow is willing to work with Beijing to ensure the success of the visit and the summits.
