A white Arkansas man faces up to 20 years in prison after being found guilty in the beating of an African-American man during racially charged protests last summer in Charlottesville, Virginia.Jacob Scott Goodwin, 23, was among a group of attackers captured on widely shared cell phone video in the August 12 beating of DeAndre Harris in a parking garage during the Unite the Right rally.Goodwin was found guilty of malicious wounding by a Charlottesville Circuit Court jury Tuesday evening. He remains in the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail and will face sentencing on August 23.The charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. The jury recommended a sentence of 10 years and a ,000 fine, according to prosecutor Nina-Alice Antony.Phone calls to Goodwin's attorney were not immediately returned.Goodwin was the first of four alleged attackers to face a trial in the beating of Harris. Jury selection is set to begin Wednesday in the trial of Alex Michael Ramos, 34, who also faces a malicious wounding charge for his involvement in the attack.Two other men, Daniel Borden, 18, and Tyler Watkins Davis, 49, have trial dates set for the summer.Vonzz Long, a friend of Harris', told CNN the two of them were part of a group of people staging counterprotests that day against neo-Nazis and white supremacists. He said they got into an argument with people from hate groups who threw things and shouted racial slurs at them, and he and Harris got separated during the ensuing chaos.When Long eventually found him, Harris was surrounded by neo-Nazis in the garage and being beaten bloody, he said.Harris had faced an misdemeanor assault charge after a white protester claimed he had struck him in the head with a flashlight moments before the parking garage beating. After a gunshot wound to the back paralyzed him, Javier Flores turned his anger into art.“For me it’s a meditative process,” he said. “It’s a way I can focus something bigger than myself.”Learning to overcome his own obstacles, Flores is now fighting for more disability rights around the world.“As an artist, I feel it’s art job to provoke and insight dialogue and conversation,” he said.Conversation about the United States' failure to ratify the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, an international human rights treaty intended to protect the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities.“I’m disabled and so for me it’s a slap in the face,” Flores said. “I felt like it was an injustice and so it’s one of the things I wanted to carry out through the aesthetics of cubism.”With help from his art students at Access Gallery, Flores created a piece titled “Really?” in an attempt to bring awareness to his fight.“The image is an adaptation of Pablo Picasso’s “Guernica,” Flores said of the artwork. “Instead of the horse, there’s a seeing eye dog. There’s people of different disabilities and abilities represented.”Now his artwork is on display at an unusual gallery: a pizza shop“It’s not just creating art but creating economic opportunity for artists with disabilities,” said Chris Donato of Pizzeria Locale.This Denver-based pizzeria recently printed Flores’ artwork on its pizza boxes.“It’s a way to kind of highlight the 30th anniversary (of the Americans with Disabilities Act) and hopefully bring attention to the cause,” Donato said.Thirty years after the ADA was signed, Pizzeria Locale is now donating 33% of its revenue to Access Gallery during a fundraiser.“Currently, we have three locations so it’s a pretty good chunk of change we hope,” Donato said.Change that Flores says can help inspire art, emotion and more help for those living with disabilities. 1902

Aldon Smith, who was the NFC's Defensive Player of the Year, has a warrant out for his arrest on Monday after a possible domestic incident from the weekend, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. Smith is wanted on charges of misdemeanor domestic violence, assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury, false imprisonment and vandalism, the Chronicle reported. Earlier the in the day, the Oakland Raiders released Smith. The incident in question was reportedly Saturday evening, and the victim identified Smith as the suspect. TMZ reported that Smith checked into a rehab facility on Monday. Smith has had frequent encounters with law enforcement. The Chronicle reported that Smith has three previous DUI arrests. He was also arrested in June 2012 when illegal weapons were found at his house during a party where two people were shot, and he was stabbed.  908

Andrew Cuomo to allow immigrant food and farm workers to apply for a driver's license — even if the worker is undocumented."Green Light NY: Driving Together" argues that New York's agriculture and food industry needs migrant workers because Americans are not interested in taking the jobs, and driver's licenses would reduce costs for farmers."Farmers are worried about losing their workers. And it is already happening," Jennifer Connor, an organizer for "Justice for Migrant Families," said.Green Light NY wants New York to join 12 other states that issue driver's licenses without regard to immigration status. Supporters of the idea it will help farmers, who are currently responsible for cost and logistics of transporting their migrant workers to the farm, grocery store or doctor's offices.Proponents of the plan say allowing undocumented immigrants to apply for driver's licenses will generate million for the state's economy"Would it be better to have them licensed, documented, required to purchase insurance and all those things? Absolutely," Dennis Brawdy of the Amos Zittel & Sons Farm in Eden, New York, said.While local farmers support the idea, it is controversial.Erie County Clerk Michael Kearns is strongly against the idea."We have to remember that we are a border state with Canada, and terrorism is a very important issue," Kearns said.According to Kearns, federal requirements for identification have greatly increased and allowing undocumented farm workers to get a driver's license would create a dangerous loophole."I believe federal law supersedes state law and I will follow the federal law," added Kearns, who said he would challenge any change in New York law regarding the issuance of licenses to workers without proper documentation. 1920
