SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A report from SANDAG Thursday showed that unemployment in San Diego County fell for the sixth straight week.San Diego County now has a 14.8% unemployment rate for the week ending June 20 -- that's down 1.5% from the previous week, and significantly lower than the peak of 25% on May 9."We're not out of the woods at all," warned SANDAG Chief Economist Ray Major. "This is still 50% higher than the highest unemployment we had during the great recession."Major said a 14.8% unemployment rate means 200,000 San Diegans are still out of work. According to the report, ZIP codes in Logan Heights, City Heights, Encanto, the College area, and San Ysidro are the hardest hit.Major told ABC 10News the looming threat of renewed restrictions on businesses may lead to another rise in unemployment."Many of these businesses have been waiting to open up again," said Major. "They haven't made any revenue for the last couple of months, they were open for about 19 days and now you're telling them they have to shut down again. Some of them are not going to be able to make it."Phil Blair, Chief Executive of Manpower Staffing, which helps companies find temporary employees, said he doesn't think unemployment will fall below 10% until the tourism industry recovers."We've got to open up airports, we've got to open up our convention center," Blair said. "And all of us have to be comfortable flying and then going into a big room with 8, 10, 12,000 people … Then we'll see (unemployment) at 13, 12 percent. And then once the virus dies down, I think within three months we'll be back within 5 or 6 percent. That's my prediction."The five ZIP codes with lowest unemployment rates are Del Mar, Carmel Valley, Rancho Santa Fe, Chula Vista NE and Rancho Bernardo W. These areas have an average unemployment rate of just over 10%. 1844

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man wielding a metal chain was shot and killed by a two-year veteran of the San Diego Police Department this week, the department announced Saturday.SDPD said 48-year-old Vaugh Harrison Denham, of San Diego, was shot and killed by Officer Corey Pitts after Denham refused to obey officers' orders to drop a machete he had reportedly used to attack someone Wednesday.Police said they arrived at a violent disturbance call involving a "machete-style" weapon in the 4000 block of Boston Ave. just after 5 p.m. Police found a 57-year-old victim with injuries that suggested he'd been attacked with an "edged weapon."ORIGINAL STORY: Police investigating fatal officer-involved shooting in SouthcrestThe victim was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries. At the scene, police tried to contact Denham around the corner from the initial scene. After he started swinging the chain, a Taser was used unsuccessfully.Police added that Officer Pitts gave multiple warnings while backing up and trying to distance himself, which Denham ignored. After swinging at him again, Officer Pitts fired on Denham, striking him once. Denham was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died of his injuries. Two other officers arrived to place Denham in handcuffs, though he continued to resist. No officers were injured during the incident.Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any information is asked to call SDPD at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 1806

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A program through the County's office of Child Welfare Services is making sure every kid in the foster program gets to celebrate this holiday season. The "Home for the Holidays" program pairs kids in the foster shelters with families for a holiday, so they don't have to spend the holiday alone."This is a great opportunity for families to kind of try it out and see what it's like to work with our youth," says Kimberly Giardina, the Director of Child Welfare Services.Right now, San Diego County has about 140 kids in the foster program that need a foster family. While this program doesn't give them a long-term solution, it helps the kids through a difficult season."People open their homes," says Giardina. "They see that our youth are just like every other kid in the neighborhood."Nanci Weinstein, who has fostered three kids through the county and adopted one, says it's an experience that's invaluable for both the kids and the families."I can't imagine what that might feel like for a child," she says. "Every moment is precious because this child is in a situation where they need someone to take care of them."Families interested in participating in the Home for the Holidays program need to complete a background check, home safety inspection, training and orientation. The process can take several months. While it may be too late for this holiday season, Giardina says people can try any holiday, secular or religious. For more information, go to the county's website here or call 877-792-KIDS (5437). 1540
