Even as a nutritionist concerned with healthy eating, ice cream is one food I can't give up.Maybe it has something to do with the way the coldness hits my mouth on a hot summer day. Or the chunky chocolatey chips.Or maybe it's that the thought of ice cream evokes happy memories of special times shared with my family in Sag Harbor, New York, where enjoying ice cream after dinner while walking along a pier lined with boats is a weekly ritual.Whatever the reason, I know I'm not the only person that has regular cravings for ice cream. According to the International Dairy Foods Association, the average American consumes more than 23 pounds of ice cream per year. That's more calories than we'll ever want to know.It even shares one key resemblance to other addictions. According to one recent study, the more often we eat ice cream, the more of it we may need to satisfy the craving.But why?"When you get the answer to that, will you call me and let me know?" joked Steve Young, a consulting food chemist and microbiologist, and a former technical director at Dreyer's and Edy's Grand Ice Cream, who teaches courses on ice cream science and technology to the very people who make ice cream, including at Breyer's and Ben and Jerry's.According to Young, helping ice cream manufacturers produce ice cream with a high appeal for consumers "is the study of a lifetime." That's because it involves "a lot of applied chemistry and physics," he explained, along with "heavy doses of personal preferences." For example, Young notes, "I love coffee ... but if you put it in ice cream format, I can't stand it."As the co-author of "Tharp & Young on Ice Cream: An Encyclopedic Guide to Ice Cream Science and Technology," he knows a bit more about what goes into making decadent ice cream than he let on. A Spanish teacher in Michigan has been charged for allegedly stealing from the school's homecoming dance and using that money at the casino.According to Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith, Lydia Johnson, 29, is charged with one count of embezzlement from a non-profit organization which could get her 10 years in prison.Johnson was Macomb Dakota High School's student activity coordinator from July 1, 2016 until her recent removal and was responsible for all finds.School officials say she oversaw ticket sales for the school's homecoming dance last year, which should have taken in nearly ,000 based on attendance. She only deposited ,000 into the school's account.When they searched her classroom, they found several homecoming cash deposit envelopes torn open and empty. They also found several casino receipts next to the empty envelopes. Her bank records also show cash deposits in excess of her salary.She also oversaw ticket sales and receipts for a trip to Camp Tamarack for 60 parents and students. Prosecutors say she should have collected and deposited nearly ,000 but only deposited 0.Camp employees tried to collect but couldn't, so they called school officials.After checking MGM records, they found Johnson spent more than ,000 in 2016 playing penny slots. She is expected to be arraigned on the charges Thursday. 1373

Amazon already owns your doorstep. Now it wants to secure the inside of your home.The company is buying Ring, maker of security cameras and internet-connected doorbells. It pairs nicely with Amazon Key, a smart doorlock and security camera service that allows Amazon delivery people to drop packages inside of people's homes.Amazon Key works in tandem with a security camera that records every in-home delivery. Ring offers similar services, recording live videos of customers' doorsteps and homes, then sending the videos to their smartphones.  558

After living in California’s Bay Area for eight years, Andrew Sanchez moved his family to Hawaii’s countryside“There are those obstacles,” he said of living in a metropolitan area. “There’s incredible amounts of traffic, pollution, crime. You know, serious things.”Sanchez and his wife are both teachers and wanted to save money and live a slower pace of life with their children. They say those were big factors in moving out of the big city.“We wanted to have an opportunity to spend more time with them and we wanted to make the right steps to watch them the best life they could,” Sanchez said.Now more people are looking to do what the Sanchez family did -- leave the big city for a smaller suburb.“It’s not surprising given the pandemic we are experiencing,” said Lawrence Yun, chief economist of the National Association of Realtors.He says due in part to the COVID-19 crisis and more companies allowing employees to work from home, there’s an exodus from downtown areas across the country.“People will say, ‘Why am I living so close job center when I can have perhaps a better affordability -- housing affordability out in the suburbs,” Yun said.According to a recent Harris Poll survey, nearly one-third of Americans are considering moving to a less densely populated area because of the coronavirus outbreak.Yun says this could impact the real estate market.“Before the pandemic, there was a housing shortage,” he said. “We knew that homebuilders needed to build significantly more to fully satisfy the demand.”Looking to help to meet that demand is housing developer Brain Levitt.“People are coming to Colorado because of lifestyle choice,” he said.Levitt is the president of Nava Real Estate Development. His company recently finished a 196-unit development called Lakehouse area outside of downtown Denver.He says a third of buyers are from out of the of area.“What we are finding, just because the cost of living or maybe new job opportunities or even just the lifestyle -- getting out of the city and getting to a place where you can work and play, it just seems like it’s attracting a lot of people,” Levitt said.That attraction of living away from a big city, however, does come at a cost.“It really required me to check my entitlements,” Sanchez said.Back in Hawaii, Sanchez said his family did have to give up several amenities when moving out of a big city.In the end, however, it was well worth it.“My kids are safe,” Sanchez said. “And you can’t put a price tag on that.” 2501
