SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The owner of Waypoint Public in North Park has found a way to help his business rebound from the Coronavirus Pandemic, while also assisting other businesses to do the same.John Pani invited Dang Brothers Pizza to set up a shop inside his restaurant."I've got a 5,000 square foot restaurant," says Pani. "Doing what we were doing at Waypoint, we could have done that in a 500 square foot restaurant."Pani closed Waypoint in mid-March before County Health Officials imposed a stay at home order. During the closure, he worried about his 130 employees and wanted to find a way to put them back to work.Pani decided to reopen with a limited menu of take-out items that his chefs could prepare. Then in June, he asked a friend who runs Dang Brothers to join him."They're mostly catering and special events. They don't have a brick and mortar shop," Pani says. "I told him, 'Hey man, come set your tent up.' So we craned in a little pizza oven onto our patio and got going."Pani says the response has been fantastic. Now he wants to invite other vendors to set up in his restaurant. He thinks it could create a street-market style environment that will give people a reason to come back to North Park."We have to find a new normal," Pani says. "I don't think we're going to be packing in restaurants any time soon. At least, I personally hope we aren't..."So we have to find a way to hopefully keep businesses alive and still provide the interaction and the hospitality and the food and beverage that people want and need. And we have to do it in a way that is appropriate given the times." 1610

A year and a half ago, Leia Parker lost her life after a swimming accident, and with help from the company Lifesharing, Leia's parents had her organs donated to families in need."As a grieving parent, you just want to find meaning, and I believe everything happens for a reason," says mother Tihani. I am extremely proud that my daughter has changed the lives of five people, and she has given a second chance and new hope to others."Tihani was hopeful her daughter would one day grow up to be a strong independent women. And that is why she named her Leia, after the Star War character Princess Leia."Princess Leia was my favorite Star Wars character, and she was one of my bigger role models. So I wanted my daughter to have a name that represented all those things that meant a lot to me"And now Leia is being honored by the Rose Parade as part of a floral portrait on a sculpture title, "Community of Life.""Honestly, when Lifesharing had called to ask us I was very humbled. I was just so honored that out of the many donors that they chose her." 1370

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego County migrant shelter is stepping up protocols Friday after officials announced the number of cases of migrants with flu-like symptoms doubled in 24 hours.A plane full of migrants landed at Lindbergh Field Friday around 1:15 p.m. The concern Friday is the flight may have more sick migrants.Border Patrol officials stated migrants are given a health screening in Texas before they travel to San Diego, and are screened again once they land.County Health officials say when they screened 47 migrants at their downtown shelter, they found 13 migrants with flu-like symptoms. A total of 29 migrants have been diagnosed with the flu since May 19, officials say. Twenty-four migrants are currently quarantined.RELATED: County responds to flu outbreak at shelter, linked to Texas migrants flown to San Diego"This is a new situation to us and I'm told it could get much worse," County Supervisor Dianne Jacob said.Once off the plane, the migrants who crossed illegally in Texas and flown to San Diego are taken to a Border Patrol Facility to be processed by ICE.Eventually, they end up at the shelter. There they get another health screening and starting Thursday, everyone gets a mask and Tamiflu pill as a precaution to keep the sickness from spreading. As of Friday, extra nurses are coming into the shelter to check on the group and ensure no one else has come down with the flu. Those who are diagnosed go with their families to a hotel that has individual air units, so they don't spread the virus. They are educated on why they should stay in the room and, if they leave, what precautions to take so they don't infect others.Migrants in the shelter can come and go as they wish.Border Patrol stated migrants who exhibit flu-like symptoms are not allowed to fly and instead are given medical treatment in Texas. Border Patrol also said agents closely monitor detainees throughout the trip. The state dedicates ,000,000 to migrant shelters, according to County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher's Office. 2037
