CLEVELAND — President Donald Trump has weighed in on the report that Cleveland's Major League Baseball club will soon drop its controversial team name "Indians" calling it the latest example of “cancel culture.”On Sunday, The New York Times reported the team is planning to drop the nickname it has used for more than a century and will become the latest franchise to abandon Native American imagery.Manager Terry Francona said in July that he believed the time had come for the team to change its name after more than 100 years.“I think it’s time to move forward,” Francona said. “It’s a very difficult subject. College students are stepping up to help working moms during the pandemic with a virtual tutoring service called Project Matriarchs.Two students on a gap year came up with the idea. After talking with parents about balancing work and remote learning for their kids, they found moms were shouldering most of the responsibilities. Some were resorting to dropping out of the workforce.“It was just this reoccurring conversation we'd have where people felt so overwhelmed and so alone and we were like OK we just, we need to do something, not only for these women who are experiencing this right now, but also for ourselves in our peer group who are going to be inheriting these norms very soon,” said Lola McAllister, co-founder of Project Matriarchs.Here's how it works. Forms to sign up are online. College students will be vetted to become tutors. Then, the site will match them with kids based on availability and what subject they need help with. The tutors can either volunteer or make an hour, but most parents don't pay anything at all.Project Matriarchs relies on donations to keep the service available for families who need it most.“So many of these kids in different school systems especially are getting left behind, not on purpose or not because the teacher can help it, but just kind of having the one-on-one support that isn't a cost burden that is accessible to everyone I think has just proven to be really important,” said Pilar McDonald, co-founder of Project Matriarchs.The founders are now in talks with employers about offering their service. 1574

CINCINNATI -- U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers intercepted a shipment containing nearly 6 pounds of liquid heroin packaged in shampoo bottles earlier this month.The package was listed as "massage oil," authorities said in a news release. It was shipped from Morelos, Mexico and was being sent to a home in the Bronx, New York when officers intercepted it at a cargo facility in Cincinnati on Oct. 11.The same day, officers also found four shipments of cocaine, each more than 4 pounds, being shipped from various Central American countries to people in West Virginia, Pennsylvania and New York, Customs and Border Protection said in a news release."These types of seizures exemplify our officers' dedication to the CBP mission of intercepting dangerous and illegal narcotics," Joshua Shorr, the Cincinnati port director, said. CLEVELAND — Police in the Cleveland area now report a total of five Amazon delivery trucks have been stolen in northeast Ohio since Nov. 25, and with them, hundreds of packages. Investigators say in some cases the vehicles are taken by thieves as the Amazon driver leaves the running truck to make a delivery.Cleveland Heights Police Chief Annette Mecklenburg said that's exactly what happened on Dec. 13, after thieves stole an Amazon vehicle during a delivery."The driver was delivering a package, she had exited the truck and was putting it on the porch," Mecklenburg said. “A truck pulled up and one of the men got out and jumped in the Amazon truck and drove away. The truck had been left running with the keys in it. It is possible up to 200 packages, we believe, were in the truck at the time it was stolen. To me it’s just heartbreaking for all the people who had ordered. You know people were ordering online to be safe because they didn’t want to get sick, so many more people were ordering on-line and were looking forward to these packages and these gifts. It’s so close to Christmas, it really is sad, I feel horrible for the people who may not get these packages in time for the holidays.”Mecklenburg said the Amazon driver was not hurt, and said GPS tracking on-board the delivery truck helped speed-up the recovery effort.“Unfortunately, there were no cameras on the truck, and at this time we couldn’t find any cameras in the immediate area where the truck was stolen,” Mecklenburg said. “It’s my understanding that it’s their policy to leave them running when they exit it to deliver a package. We have heard that with some of these trucks, drivers are being robbed by people with guns.”News 5 contacted Amazon headquarters about the truck heists, and asked if these cases have the company considering delivery protocol changes, or adding truck surveillance cameras to assist police make arrests.
