SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The threat of coronavirus still is looming and combined with a new problem of bad air quality from west coast wildfires, means there are now more reasons to wear masks, but not all masks will protect against both. The CDC currently recommends the public wear masks with two or more layers over their nose and mouth to stop the spread of COVID-19. In regards to the particulate matter in the air because of wildfire smoke, the cloth coverings are not enough protection.“If you’re wearing a cloth mask for COVID, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re protected from those microscopic smoke particles that can still be breathed in,” said Robert Reider, Interim Director of the San Diego Air Pollution Control District, or SDAPCD.Reider said the air in Southern California has been some of the worst in the world through the past week. This is because of the multiple wildfires burning in Northern California, Oregon, and Washington. The winds are pulling the smoke south and it’s settling in places like San Diego, creating hazy and unsafe conditions. Reider said the winds are expected to shift around Friday, meaning the haze should clear after that.In the meantime, Sharp Rees-Stealy physician Jyotu Sandhu said N95 masks are the best protection against wildfire smoke. He added that individuals should assess their own health when determining how seriously they need to take the smoke. People with lung or breathing issues like asthma and COPD should be more aware of the smoke. The SDAPCD issued a Wildfire Smoke Advisory because of the impacts. The air quality will range between "moderate" and "unhealthy for sensitive groups" through Thursday. Sandhu said he’s had patients asking if it’s safe to exercise in the smoke. He said if a person is healthy, they can go outside but should consider spending less time outdoors than usual. For example, if a healthy person runs outside for an hour a day, it might be smart to cut that time in half and only run for half an hour in the smoke. He said if possible, exercising indoors is safer than outside while the smoke persists. 2098

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — There's no better way to observe San Diego's history, and perhaps future, than through public murals throughout the county. While many of these murals serve as a great boost to social media profiles, they often double as a visual journey showing our region's past and what we hold dear. One thing San Diego is often associated with, happiness. Our scenic coastline, diverse communities, and bevvy of sunshine throughout the year can be thanked for that. But for those trying times, the "Smile, You're in San Diego" mural at 1st Ave. and C St. serves as a reminder. The mural's artists, Pheobe Cornog and Roxy Prima of Pandr Design Co., we tasked with the design by the San Diego Tourism Authority."They originally just wanted a smiley face. But we wanted to take it a little bit further and create something that people would get excited about," Prima says.Instead of a smiley face, the mural depicts a canvas of color not only for those ready to pose, but for those stuck in traffic to enjoy.RELATED: San Diego's graffiti arts park continues to change lives 20 years later"We wanted something bright and happy and colorful so when you're on your commute you can be happy seeing this piece," Prima added. But of course, it's also a tourist destination nestled in downtown for those who find it."People from far away places that come to San Diego and seek this mural out now and will message us, 'Oh, I was here from Philly,' or wherever," Cornog said.RELATED: Convoy Street rooster mural highlights efforts for future neighborhood archwayBut not far, Chicano Park displays tons of public art showing Chicano history and culture in the Barrio Logan neighborhood. The legs of the Coronado Bay Bridge are covered in vibrant pieces, ranging from pieces like "Founding of Mexico City," "Birth of La Raza," and "Female Inteligencia."And over in Liberty Station another piece of local history at the "Greetings from US Naval Training Station" mural. Inside each letter of the postcard design is an era of the training station's history, from US Navy facility to public market."SeaWalls: Murals for Oceans," on Fourth Ave., was painted by the Cohort Collective to raise environmental issues. The group installed 18 murals around the county to bring topics of overfishing and ocean reef conservation to onlookers."There's not enough public art, we don't think, in San Diego. We have the best weather and people are outside all the time, so we should have more art on the streets and for people to easily access," Cornog said.A way for our history and future to shine through, wherever you may be in San Diego."We feel art shouldn't just be in galleries, it should be everywhere you look," Prima added. 2715

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The United States Postal Service unveiled its newest forever stamp Wednesday, honoring pioneering astronaut and UC San Diego professor Sally Ride. The ceremony, held at the UCSD campus, featured several of Ride's family and friends, including her life and business parter, Tam O'Shaughnessy, astronaut and Director of the Johnson Space Center Ellen Ochoa, and tennis legend and activist Billie Jean King.RELATED: First American woman in space to be honored with the Sally Ride Forever Stamp"It's amazing the impact and the long-lasting impact that Sally Ride's going to have," King told 10News. "And the stamp, this forever stamp, will be a big help."O'Shaughnessy revealed to 10News that Ride was a stamp collector, herself. "She just kept doing it her whole life, so she would just be so honored with this."Ride was the first American woman in space. Upon leaving NASA, she became a professor. It is dedicated to inspiring young people in STEM.Ride died of pancreatic cancer in 2012 at age 61. 1124

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier arrived in its new home port of San Diego Monday, bringing thousands of sailors and hundreds of millions of dollars in estimated annual economic impact for the region. The Navy will relocate another carrier strike group, the USS Carl Vinson, to San Diego this summer, giving the city three carriers for the first time in a decade. Each carrier has about 3,000 sailors attached to it.RELATED: USS Abraham Lincoln returns from around-the-world deploymentThe two new carriers are expected to boost San Diego’s economy by .6 billion each year, according to a 2019 study by the San Diego Military Advisory Council. The study found that each carrier generates about 0 million in annual economic impact. The USS Roosevelt left for a seven-month deployment last week.RELATED: Thousands of sailors leave for 7-month deployment on USS RooseveltAlthough the Navy will house some of the roughly 6,000 new sailors and their families in military housing, many will be looking for places to stay in San Diego’s rental market, said real estate economist Gary London.“It will tax our housing system,” he said. “The amount of people that are coming off those carrier groups that get infused into the San Diego housing market is roughly the equivalent of the number of units that we built all of last year in San Diego County.”London estimated that San Diego’s rental market is about 95 percent occupied, and said the supply of moderately priced housing is thin.“This is a supply constrained housing market, particularly on the rental side,” he said. “Whenever you’re infusing on the demand side, more people needing housing, you are in effect bidding up the rental rates for all housing in San Diego.” “It’s going to increase the rental rates in San Diego,” he said. 1820
