The West Texas man who killed seven people and wounded 25 in a shooting rampage bought his gun in a private sale, which doesn't require a background check, a law enforcement official told CNN.Police have described the firearm Seth Ator, 36, used in Saturday's killing spree in and around Odessa, Texas, as an AR-15-style rifle.Ator tried to buy a firearm on January 14, 2014, but wasn't allowed to, the Texas Department of Public Safety told CNN in an email. The department is prohibited by law from disclosing the reason he was denied the purchase, the DPS said.Ator failed a background check when he applied to get a gun, a representative for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said Monday, without giving details. The ATF, the FBI and the DPS are "aggressively following up on" the source that supplied the firearm to Ator, the ATF representative said.Investigators are still searching for a motive in the mass shooting. The man showed up to work Saturday "in a distressed mental state," and was fired, said FBI Special Agent in Charge Christopher Combs.Speaking at a press conference Monday, Combs said the firing wasn't the reason for the shooting spree and that he was "already enraged" when he showed up for work.Ator had been 1264
There's a new first responder on the lookout for anyone who may be experiencing mental health issues.“Most people probably see their pharmacists more than their primary care physicians or certified therapists, so pharmacists are in a really good position to be able to notice these early warning signs or risk factors,” said Chad Cadwell, a Walgreens pharmacist. Walgreens pharmacists just finished the first phase of mental health first aid training. The program was developed by the National Council for Behavioral Health. They're taught to look for risk factors and red flags in patients, everything from anxiety and depression to addiction.Pharmacists can connect those people with the right resources, support groups, or may just lend an empathetic ear.“Really listening to their needs, spending those extra couple of minutes, instead of trying to get the work out, but also spending that time talking and listening to your patients, right now with everything that is going on with the pandemic, everything is so busy,” said Cadwell. This training initiative was actually put into place pre-pandemic.Mental Health America has already seen significant increases in the number of daily screenings for depression and anxiety since the beginning of the year. 1270
The Texas Judicial Commission is issuing a public warning to a judge who told a jury that God wanted to acquit a woman who was on trial for charges related to sex trafficking. The jury found her guilty instead, and Gloria Romero Perez was sentenced to 25 years in prison. The judge, Jack Robison, is on the other end of a disciplinary measure.Robison, a district judge in Comal County, Texas, just north of San Antonio, was presiding over Perez's trial in January 2018. According to the Texas Judicial Commission, he walked into the jury room after the jury's deliberations, said he had been praying about the case, and informed the jurors God told him the defendant was innocent. He asked the jury to reverse its guilty verdict. Jurors declined. The Texas Judicial Commission's 788
