FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. — A mother is speaking out and speaking up after a high school administrator called cheerleaders at Harrison High School in Farmington Hills, Michigan strippers.Dorrine Griffen said she was shocked and hurt when her daughter came home after a pep rally at Farmington's Harrison High School to learn a school administrator called out the cheer team and degraded them.“You got to refer to those students as strippers, and now you’re right back, hands-on, working with them,” said Griffen.On September 21, Harrison High School cheerleaders held a pep rally in the school gymnasium when something was said by a school administrator.“She said the assistant principal referred to the routine the girls performed at the pep rally and said she wouldn’t allow them to perform anymore or would not want to have them perform anymore because they look like strippers,” Griffen said.Griffin, an educator herself, said this kind of language is disappointing.“We have a bigger role. We have to bring those students up as far as making them feel important, we have to inspire, we have to motivate,” she said.School officials have been dealing with the fallout after the comment was made.WXYZ reached out the school for comment. FALLS CHURCH, Va. – It's the time of year for the great outdoors and the sounds of summer – or rather, a socially-distanced summer.“When we're outdoors or keeping a social distance with kids, they have a little more flexibility,” said Ryan Amato, recreation program supervisor for day camps in Falls Church, Virginia.According to the American Camp Association, about 8,400 overnight camps and 5,600 day camps usually operate across the country. This year, 62% of camps closed, but the ones that didn’t underwent some changes.“We really had to, I don’t want to say dumb down, but really minimize the activity we do and find things we can do while social distancing and still keeping their interest,” Amato said.That meant placing kids in smaller, individual camp groups and trying to keep them outside as much as possible. Eventually, though, when the heat forces them to go inside, some of the changes become more obvious, like the use of a rope, which students hold onto at six-foot intervals to enter the camp’s recreation building in a socially distant manner.“We do have a rope that we keep and keep them six feet when they're walking,” Amato said. “They should mask on as well because it gets a little congested in hallways.”Camp counselor Maya El-Hage says some things are missing, like field trips to the pool, and certain camp goers.“There's definitely faces that I see every summer that are not here,” she said.Now, they’re focused more on classroom games and arts and crafts at a distance.“We're making it work,” El-Hage said. “We're set up like these 6-foot tables, so that they know where they're supposed to be.”So, could these day camps – with classroom set-ups – serve as a guide to schools trying to reopen? It depends.“I think their challenges are a little greater, but I do think there's some learning that the school systems can learn from watching some of the summer camps in their jurisdictions,” said Danny Schlitt, director of parks and recreation in Falls Church, Virginia.Yet, they admit their programs are geared towards fun and schools have a more complex mission.“It's a learning environment in there and they're going to be there for long periods of time,” Schlitt said. “Once you get indoors things do change a lot, you know, and it really is important - it becomes that much more important - for the mask wearing and the social distancing.”That’s where parents can make a difference, they say.“The parent starts at home with, you know, talk about the importance of social distancing, importance of wearing a mask,” Amato said, “and when they can enforce that, it helps our staff do it here. FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) - A grateful family is speaking out after a Camp Pendleton Marine helped save their trapped baby as flames engulfed their car.Two Mondays ago, Tony Hurley, his wife and 1-year-old daughter were in their car on East Mission Road, on their way to a relative's home, around 5 p.m. Hurley says a gas can fell off a truck in front of him. Fire officials say it became wedged under the engine, leading to sparks as it dragged on the road."Almost like a firework going off ... As we pulled over, the car is already on fire. Flames were surrounding the perimeter of car," said Hurley.A frantic Hurley, along with his wife, got out and went to the back seat to get their daughter, but he says the latching mechanism for the car seat base was stuck."That's when I look up, and I'm face to face with a Marine on the other side of the car," said Hurley.That Marine was Gunnery Sergeant Kyle Wetter, who just happened to be driving by."At that point is when I used my pocketknife to cut the car seat belt that was holding the baby's seat int the car, so the dad could get the car seat out," said Wetter in a video interview released by the Marine Corps.As the family scrambled to safety, Wetter grabbed their belongings out of the car before also getting to safety. About a minute later, three different explosions rocked the car. After a few more minutes, flames had consumed the car."I don’t even want to imagine what could have happened if he hadn’t been on scene," said Hurley.Hurley says the Marine's efforts ended with the best Christmas gift ever: his family was alive and well."He's definitely a hero in my book, and I'm more than grateful," said Hurley."It's what I expect any person to do in that moment, is to help someone in need. I don't think I'm special by no means. I was just the person behind them that decided to help," said Wetter.Wetter credits his Marine Corps training, which has taught him how to react to fast-developing situations.A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help the Hurley family with the purchase of a new car. 2070

ESCONDIDO — When Greg Spence talks board games, he isn't referring to your Yahtzee's or Scrabbles.The board games he's passionate about can take hours to play - think Settlers of Catan, Spirit Island, or Sagrada.“There are so many games out there that get deep into different genres and strategies and tactics that are so much fun,” he said. “You can get lost in the variety of board games.”The problem Spence discovered with in-depth games, however, is they have dozens of pieces and can even take half-an-hour to set up.That's why in 2013, he launched the company called The Broken Token - which helps gamers organize pieces. Their products include levels of wooden trays, often marked for different kinds of game pieces.The Broken Token did so well that Spence quit his day job and opened a manufacturing space in Escondido. He's now selling internationally.But last year, he almost left California for Missouri or Indiana, states that would offer more distribution flexibility and are closer to conventions. The states are also lower cost than California, which has some of the highest taxes in the nation.“We didn't want to leave, but we were trying to make the best decision for the company,” Spence said.But instead, he got in touch with the group Innovate 78, a collection of city economic officials that pointed him in the direction of a California Competes tax credit. The 0,000 credit will allow The Broken Token to move into a new facility in Vista. In exchange, the company will invest 0,000 locally and hire 14 additional people through 2023.“There are places out there like us that need good staff and good talent,” Spence said,He added the pandemic hit them in terms of manufacturing and supply.
