HANOI, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese and Vietnamese people kicked off a four-day mass gala here Saturday in Vietnamese capital city of Hanoi to celebrate 60 years of bilateral diplomatic ties.Tong Thi Phong, Secretarty of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee, said at the opening ceremony that bilateral friendly relations between Vietnam and China are the treasure of two peoples, and the two countries have seen strengthened cooperation in various fields in recent years.Phong said the four-day big gathering of the Vietnamese and Chinese people will strengthen mutual understanding between the two countries, enrich bilateral comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership and advance bilateral ties.Chen Haosu, president of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, said at the opening ceremony that China and Vietnam are good and close neighbors.Chen said this year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations and China-Vietnam Friendship Year. QINGDAO, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan-based EVA Airways Corp. Saturday launched a weekly direct flight service linking southern Taiwan's Kaohsiung City and Qingdao City in eastern Shandong Province.The service will operate on Saturdays. It is the first direct service between the two cities.The flight will increase the number of direct flights between Qingdao and Taiwan to 20 per week, according to Qingdao Airport.Thanks to increased people-to-people exchange between Taiwan and the mainland, Qingdao Airport's passenger traffic to and from Taiwan this year reached 145,495 on Nov. 15, a 55 percent year-on-year increase.
UNITED NATIONS, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- China's UN Ambassador Li Baodong on Tuesday expressed hope for a "peaceful, free, transparent and fair" referendum to be held in south Sudan early next year."The south Sudan referendum is a key step in the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), but it is not an end in itself," Li told a high-level meeting of the UN Security Council here."We hope that the referendum will be held in a peaceful, free, transparent and fair manner in accordance with the CPA and reflect the will of the Sudanese people, and that the outcome of the referendum will be respected by all parties."The ambassador urged the northern and southern Sudan to "try their utmost to expedite the preparations for the referendum," and called on the international community to create favorable conditions for the referendum, "but not to prejudge its outcome.""Neither party must take unilateral actions," he stressed. " Whatever the outcome of the referendum, it is necessary to ensure the overall peace and stability of Sudan and the whole region."The Chinese envoy also expressed concern about "the serious lacking behind of the political process" in Darfur, which poses the "most prominent challenge" for the settlement of the question of Darfur.He urged those Darfur parties that have yet to join the political process to do so immediately and without conditions.Li announced that the Chinese government has decided to make an additional donation of 500,000 U.S. dollars to the UN Trust Fund for the political process in Darfur.
MANILA, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- A cargo ship with 24 Chinese crew aboard sank off the waters of the Philippines' Batanes province on Friday afternoon, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Saturday.Quoting a report from the Batanes provincial police office, PNP spokesman Chief Supt. Agrimero Cruz said Saturday the Panama cargo vessel MV Hong Wei met the incident about 120 nautical miles (222 kilometers) off Itbayat island around 3:22 p.m. Friday.Cruz could not immediately say what caused the vessel to sink or the vessel's destination.A passing vessel, MV Shun Tong, and a ship from China's Taiwan region's coast guard rescued 12 crew and two passengers, respectively, said Cruz, adding that at least three ships from Taiwan region's coast guard are currently at the scene to conduct search and rescue operations for the 10 still missing crew members.A rescue vessel from the Chinese mainland is expected to arrive at the site anytime Saturday to join the search and rescue operations, said Cruz.Wang Ben, police attache of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Philippines, told Xinhua that the embassy has confirmed the incident with China's Ministry of Transport.
