PHOENIX (KNXV) - Imagine getting the greatest gift of your life and then suddenly having it ripped away. It's what the Gateway Academy in Phoenix is feeling right now. The K-12 school for high functioning students with autism just had an important gift taken away.It's an empty field right now but the plan was for Gateway Academy to remove all of the bushes and gravel to make room for a brand new adaptive playground. The cost of entire project would be picked up by a very generous donor."We thought we had found an angel who understood the population and who's ready to give generously," said Robin Sweet, the school's executive director. "Not so much."That donation, ,000. How much the school has seen of that money? Nothing."Before I signed the purchase order I called him again just to make sure," said Sweet.That donor backed out. Now the school is left with a massive bill, a playground that's sitting in storage on pallets and students who are disappointed."Guess what,  don't see anything out here," said Joseph, an eighth grader at Gateway.  "It's not just to have fun. It would really help us," said Joseph."It's instrumental in their well-being and mental and physical health and then to say, sorry - just kidding?" said Sweet.The school won't identify the donor but Sweet does have a message for the man. "Shame on you. It's not about me but it's about the kids. That's terrible."The school has its hands tied and can't take legal action against the donor. PARKLAND, Fla. — On Monday, the State Attorney's Office released a 217-page transcript of Nikolas Cruz's conversation with a Broward Sheriff's Office detective hours after he was arrested on Feb. 14 for opening fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School killing 17 people.The interview was conducted by Detective John Curcio on February 14, at 6:09 p.m.The detective began with a series of standard questions, such as asking Cruz his name, where he was born and how old he is.Shortly after the interview began, the detective leaves the room to get some water. While he was alone in the interview room but still being recorded, Cruz said, "Just kill me. Just f***ing kill me. F***."Later in the interview, Cruz admitted to detective Curcio that he was depressed, going back to when his mother was still alive.Cruz described loneliness and solitude as reasons for his depression. 912

Police in Hampton, Virginia are investigating after 119 MacBook Air laptops were reported stolen from an elementary school.Officers were called to Phenix Elementary School on August 17.Police say two unidentified suspects broke into the school through a window shortly after 3 a.m. and made off with the computers.23-year-old Averi Wilkins of Hampton was charged with one count of possession of stolen property in connection to the case.Wilkins tells News 3 he buys and sells used electronics all the time and didn’t know the laptops had been stolen. He’s scheduled to be in court Tuesday.Hampton Schools says the stolen laptops have not been recovered. 661

PHOENIX, Ariz. (KGTV) - A San Diego woman is demanding answers from Phoenix police after her uncle was shot to death by officers outside his apartment.This week, ABC10 News spoke to 18-year-old San Diegan Sadie Whitaker about her family's outrage surrounding the death of her 40-year-old uncle, Ryan Whitaker, who was shot by Phoenix police in May. It was captured on police body camera video that was just released.“I feel like this needs to be heard everywhere. It needs to be national news. It was just wrong,” said Sadie.Police said a concerned neighbor called in to report that Whitaker and his girlfriend may have been having a physical fight inside their Phoenix apartment.In the police body camera video, officers are heard knocking on the door and identifying themselves. Whitaker opens the door and appears to step out with a gun in his right hand which he then appears puts behind his back and lowers to the ground with his left hand visibly in the air. The encounter quickly escalates and shots are heard being fired.Police said the second officer in the video shot Whitaker, believing the first officer was in immediate danger. Whitaker did not fire, they report.Sadie tells ABC10 News that a few days before that, someone had knocked on their door but took off. “This night, when the same thing happened, he brought his gun to the door for protection,” Sadie added.She said his gun was legally purchased and he had no criminal history.After shots were fired, Whitaker's girlfriend appears to become hysterical. She’s heard asking why officers shot him. An officer is heard telling her that Whitaker had just pulled a gun on them. She responds that it’s dark and someone just knocked on the door.An officer is heard saying, “Your neighbor called saying he heard you guys going at it.” She responds, “Literally, we were making salsa and playing Crash Bandicoot so there may have been some screaming from PlayStation but it wasn't domestic violence or anything.”“I do not think [the shooting] was justified whatsoever,” said Sadie.Whitaker's family is calling for the officers to be terminated and face criminal prosecution.“I want there to be awareness and I want people to know that this kind of stuff is going on,” Sadie says.Phoenix Police told ABC10 News that they can’t comment because of pending litigation. PINE VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man suspected of smuggling several people into the U.S. from Mexico led Border Patrol agents on a chase before injecting himself with heroin, the agency says. According to the agency, the incident happened around 10:45 a.m. Tuesday at the Pine Valley immigration checkpoint. After approaching the checkpoint in a 2001 Mercedes sedan with five passengers, the man was referred to a secondary inspection area before speeding away. RELATED: Second person dies after smuggling boat capsizes off Imperial Beach coastAgents chased the man down, deploying a “vehicle immobilization device” to deflate several tires, but the man kept going, agents say. After sliding off the road along I-8 near the Pine Valley Road exit, all five of the passengers ran out of the vehicle and into nearby brush. The driver, however, stayed in the sedan and began injecting himself with a black substance later identified as heroin. He was arrested on smuggling charges and is currently undergoing a medically monitored detox. The group included two men, two women, and a 16-year-old boy. They were uninjured in the crash and taken to a Border Patrol station to be processed for removal. “This is another example of the dangerous acts human smugglers perform for financial gain and how they show no regard for human life,” said Chief Patrol Agent Aaron Heitke. “Fortunately, this pursuit came to a safe conclusion and ended with the driver in custody.” 1643
