While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is urging Americans not to travel this holiday season, it's clear that many will choose to do so anyway.Between Nov. 25 and Nov. 29 — the height of the Thanksgiving travel surge —the Transportation Security Agency (TSA) said it screened about 4.5 million travelers. While that represented 39% less travelers than last year, it represented the most travelers the agency had screened since the start of the pandemic.With another surge in travel expected for Christmas and New Year's, the TSA has offered some helpful tips when it comes to packing luggage for the holiday season.Packing giftsDo not pre-wrap gifts: Gifts need to be screened like any other piece of luggage, meaning gifts need to be unwrapped if they need to be inspected. The TSA suggests wrapping once you reach your destination, or wrapping in a gift bag.Be sure to pack gifts that contain large amounts liquid, like perfumes, gel candles or snow globes, in a checked bag. TSA allows containers with 3.4 ounces of liquid or less for carry-ons.Snowboards, snowshoes and ice skates can be carried on, but be sure to check with airlines about a plane's overhead bin space. Skis and ski poles will need to be checked.Packing foodHomemade baked goods and other treats can be carried on, but any sort of jams, jellies or syrups are liquids and should be checked if they're in a container larger than 3.4 ounces. A rule of thumb? "If you can spill it, spray it, spread it, pump it or pour it, then it should be packed in a checked bag if the container is larger than 3.4 ounces."Higher-proof alcoholic beverages (between 24% and 70% alcohol by volume) are limited in check bags to five liters a passenger. Any beverage with less than 24% alcohol by volume has no size limit in a checked bag.Mini bottles of alcohol can be carried on, as long as they are less than 3.4 ounces and fit "comfortably" in a single quart-sized bag.Packing electronics Electronics to be given as a gift can be carried on, but remember to place electronics larger than a laptop in their own bin with nothing above or below it.TSA allows drones past checkpoints, but double-check with airlines on their policies about transporting drones.Remember, loose lithium batteries are prohibited in checked bags. With a second surge in COVID-19 cases underway, a family from the Midwest is sharing their harrowing story about surviving the coronavirus illness.A father, mother and son were all on ventilators, on life-support at one point.Chuck Drungelo was the first to feel sick right after Easter. He stayed home from work but his family, including his 81-year-old mother-in-law, all eventually landed in the hospital with the virus.“They said it looks like you have COVID pneumonia, so by Monday I was in the hospital and I gave it to my whole family,” said the dad.“How could this happen? How could all four members of their family get this? And it just shows you how contagious it is,” said Raeann Shedd, Drungelo’s sister.Chuck got the sickest. The ventilator wasn't enough. He was moved to an ECMO machine, which is life-support for the lungs and heart, for 19 days. He eventually got virus antibody plasma treatment that helped him turn a corner.“You can still hear my trachea. I got a hole from the feeding tube,” said Drungelo.Drungelo’s sister and his sister-in-law ended up having to make all the medical decisions while they were incapacitated. He was finally able to come home from a rehabilitation facility July 1.“It’s awful because your family is struggling, and you can’t be there for them. You can’t go to the hospital. You can’t hold their hand and talk to the doctor and look them in the eye. People think it’s their right to not wear a mask. I guess in a way it is, but we should do everything we can to save each other,” said Shedd.“My wife said the other day, if you don’t like wearing a mask, you’re not going to like wearing a ventilator,” said DrungeloAs you can imagine the family is facing a massive amount of medical bills. Peterson says it is an item he never leaves home without. Home is Nephi, Utah and it has been most of his life.“Oh, I was a good kid who got in very little trouble,” Peterson said.Nephi is a "blink and you miss it" stop along Interstate-15 between Salt Lake City and Las Vegas.Sgt. Peterson is just one of 10 full-time officers.“I just patrol all the corners of town, backstreets and the main thoroughfares,” he said.A disorderly conduct call sometimes comes in the form of a farm animal.“We’ve had cows and goats,” Peterson said. “I mean you name it and they run loose around here.”Sgt. Peterson knows he is just one call away from a surprise class reunion.“It makes it entertaining when you stop somebody you know or you’re on a call with somebody you went to high school with,” he said.Life moves at a slower pace in these parts. It is a stark contrast from what officers in major cities across the country are dealing with.“The rioting and the protest,” Sgt. Peterson said slowly shaking his head. “I mean, it starts to wear on you a little bit and know that other officers aren’t as lucky as we are.”The Nephi Chief of Police echoes those sentiments.“You know, the great thing is I had the big city policing experience when I was young,” said Chief Mike Morgan. “When I was young, I could get out and do the things that needed to get done and I was able to learn; that experience brought me here.”Like Peterson, Chief Morgan has come home.“There’s no place like home,” Chief Morgan said with a chuckle.The move from big city life means big changes.“There are no protests at all down here,” Chief Morgan said.The department is prepared for the day some of the bigger city issues may creep into town.“We’ve got all the equipment I could ever ask for and it’s such a great community,” Sgt. Peterson said.Even a worldwide pandemic is not affecting the small-town police force much.“I mean, we know it’s there and we know it’s just one bad day away, but until then, we’re just going to sort of enjoy it,” Sgt.
