SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Whether its the search for something warm or just a turn to the comforts of home, this past winter gave San Diegans more pause for certain cuisines.Food ordering platform Grubhub looked at food delivery trends from Dec. 22, 2018, to March 13, 2019, to analyze San Diego's winter food trends by users compared to the rest of the year.Leading the pack were bean burritos saw a 362 percent increase in popularity during that time span, more than 100 percent more than the next most popular dish, according to Grubhub.RELATED: Inventive eggs Benedict, dumpling soup highlight San Diego's foodie scene on Yelp listGyro wraps experienced a 258 percent increase in orders, while vegetable ramen orders shot up 222 percent. Chicken wraps (165 percent increase) and chow mein (157 percent increase) rounded out the top five menu items.The "science" could correspond with winter's below average temperatures — and perhaps the heavy rains. Many of the most popular items ordered were soups.Heading into spring, the app went further and looked at orders over the spring 2017 and 2018 to predict what San Diegans would likely order. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — UC San Diego was granted a temporary use permit by the city council in National City to use El Toyon Park to conduct a clinical vaccination trial.The permit is good from Sept. 16 to Oct. 31, 2022, with a rental rate of ,000 per month.A spokesperson for UCSD Health said the site would be for the Janssen clinical trial, which is still awaiting final approval locally; more details could not be confirmed Friday.The vaccination clinic would be set up in a parking lot at the park in National City, one of the communities heavily impacted by COVID-19.Community advocates have been working with UCSD to inform potential participants in the South Bay about vaccine trials.“The Chicano Federation has been working with a lot of our underserved communities, but also some of the hardest-hit communities by COVID-19, particularly the Latino communities,” said Roberto Alcantar, Chief Strategy Officer for the Chicano Federation. “One of the hot topics to come out of this is the issue with vaccinations.”Alcantar said concerns were raised over a different trial that was set to begin in the South Bay earlier this month; it was later put on hold. But UCSD quickly worked with the federation to ensure residents in the trial areas would get the information needed to make informed decisions if they wanted to participate.“We’re happy to see that UCSD is taking the lead in National City, and it’s not some other group because we know that they’re doing the best that they can to provide the right information,” he said. “If there are trials that are happening out there that are unethical or targeting people of color with incentives, we’ll call them out.”UCSD researchers previously said they hoped to focus on recruiting people for the trials from underserved communities with the highest rate of COVID-19.The San Diego Latino Health Coalition, which includes the Chicano Federation and several other nonprofit organizations, will continue community outreach efforts before the trial officially begins.“We’re very effective at getting the information out, and people are receptive to us because they trust us, they know us, we’ve been working with them for decades,” said Alcantar.There’s no word on when the trial will start, but soon there may be three clinical trials running simultaneously with two focused primarily on the South Bay. 2361

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With so many families feeling the financial impact of COVID-19 this year, a Linda Vista family is hoping to quietly bring some holiday cheer to neighbors by taking on the role of Secret Santa.Jaelyn,13, Jayda, 11, and Jessica, 4, will be doing plenty of wrapping this holiday season. Their mom Rhian and her partner, Jeff Leardini, are determined to deliver some holiday cheer."There are so many families that are worried about how they're going to make it to tomorrow. Christmas is the last thing on their mind. We want to take that worry away," said Leardini.Leardini posted on the Nextdoor app an offer to buy and wrap a Christmas toy for any neighbors in need, no strings attached. Leardini, a sales manager for a pet supply company, and his girlfriend, a nurse, kept their jobs during the pandemic."We feel very fortunate and want to help people," said Leardini.During this holiday season, his family are now playing the part of Secret Santa."We just thought there are people that might be embarrassed to go to organizations, so we thought can we help them without them having to go through a lot of red tape," said Leardini.So far, a handful of neighbors have responded to his offer"It's been really emotional reading the messages," said Leardini.Some are dealing with lost jobs, others with COVID-related health issues. Those families will soon receive something extra under the tree."Want to deliver smiles to them, even if it's just for one day. Their children will be happy, and that in turn will deliver joy to their family. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - UC San Diego began welcoming some students back to campus housing, with a host of COVID-19 safety precautions.As with all things during this pandemic, move-in weekend at UCSD didn’t look quite the same."Kinda nervous, but excited," said freshman Alexis Estrada.Along with the normal nervous excitement, there was the new normal. Each student given a mask and hand sanitizer, along with a coronavirus test - results within 48 hours.The move-in for some 7,500 students - staggered throughout a 10-day span.Residential adviser Summer Thai says the actual moving in is taking longer."Definitely different. More difficult to get more stuff into the room ... in elevators, we practice social distancing. One family unit at a time," said Thai.While a vast majority of classes will be remote learning, any student going to a UCSD location will have to a complete a daily health self-screening. Students living and going to class on campus will be tested twice a month.Freshman Nicole Rodriguez says while the pandemic life is challenging."I can’t really hang out with suitemates. It's kind of isolating ... But these precautions are the right thing to do," said Rodriguez.UCSD officials are hoping to avoid the outbreak situation unfolding at San Diego State University, with more than 700 positive cases. UCSD is going high tech to ease those worries. Ongoing wastewater testing is serving as a warning system. Also, a voluntary pilot program will utilize smartphone technology to notify students if they may have been exposed.Classes begin September 28. Nearly 90% of classes will be online. 1612
