SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Saturday marked the first weekend San Diego County restaurants were under indoor dining restrictions and they've gotten creative to stay afloat during the pandemic.Monday the Governor announced San Diego County joined the state's watch list due to the spike in coronavirus cases. The county announced bars, restaurants, wineries, movie theaters, zoos, museums, and cardrooms will need to shutter indoor operations Monday night at midnight.Saturday on Harbor Island, Coasterra debuted a "pop up" dining experience on their 'float' that normally hosts events.Executive Chef and Partner in the Cohn Restaurant Group, Deborah Scott thought their event space on the water (dubbed The Float) was a perfect place for extra seating. Their sister restaurant Island Prime had to close it's doors, due to the new restrictions. So the Island Prime, moved to an island. On the 'float' they can seat up to 68 people, that's 68 plates that Island Prime can now sell at a time. Scott said they were booked Saturday, their first official night, but are not filling it to capacity. She said they want to make sure things run smoothly."My biggest fear is that everyone is going to come out here and have dinner and go, 'Can you just move Island Prime out here?'" She said chuckling. The same sentiment was shared in Escondido where they kicked off the first weekend of street-side dining. One lane in both directions down Grand Avenue is shut down between Maple and Juniper Streets to make way for the extra tables, chairs and umbrellas.A huge opportunity for indoor venues like The Grand Tea Room.Owner of The Grand Tea Room Lousia Magoo said inside she can seat about 50 people, "so bringing more out here, I could probably seat 30 people at a time so it really means everything to us."Magoo also sits on the Downtown Business Association Board and said they've dedicated ,000 in supplies for the restaurants to help with creating their outdoor dining space.Saturday she said they handed out 50 umbrellas and are expecting more tables and chairs Monday, providing San Diegans a dose of normalcy both on the water and curbside. 2134

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Symphony's new bayside concert venue is set to open just as San Diego's summer begins.Once completed in July 2020, Bayside Performance Park will be the first and only permanent waterfront venue on the west coast, according to the symphony's latest post online. The recent post also offered a more detailed look at the performance park's layout along San Diego Bay.The venue, which started construction in September 2019, will replace the current facilities in Embarcadero Marina Park South with a new, 13,000-square-foot covered stage, six levels of terraced seating with 13 sections across, a promenade, flexible seating between 2,000 to 10,000 guests, new public restrooms, and other park enhancements.RELATED:San Diego Symphony to start bayside venue construction next monthSan Diego Symphony's new bayside venue clears last hurdle before buildThe stage itself will be covered in a sea shell-like structure with state-of-the-art sound and lighting equipment. While noise concerns arose early on before construction began, the symphony says the angle of the stage's dome should direct most sound toward the audience and not across the bay toward Coronado residents."The venue itself is a work of art, with many technologies working in unison to elevate the music," the symphony writes. "With state-of-the-art sound, lighting and staging, the Symphony will attract bigger names and brighter talent than ever before."The symphony made a minimum investment of million toward the venue.According to the Port of San Diego, the park will be open to the public 85 percent of the year, while the other 15 percent will be reserved for paid admission or rental events. The permanent venue will also host four free public events every year. 1772

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's District Attorney's Office Wednesday says the officer who fatally shot a man who had attacked another person with a machete in Southcrest acted in self defense. After review the case and officer's actions, DA Summer Stephen's office says Officer Corey Pitts, who fired upon Vaughn Denham on Aug. 8, 2018, is not criminally liable for the shooting.Denham, 48, has reportedly attacked another person with a machete during an argument over a dog chain. After Pitts responded, Denham ran up to his patrol car and swung a four-foot metal chain at the vehicle, the DA's office says.RELATED:Police investigating fatal officer-involved shooting in SouthcrestNeighbors say deadly shooting in Southcrest started because of a machete attackSDPD officer named in shooting of man suspected of Southcrest attackStephen's office says Pitts ordered Denham to drop the chain and Denham refused while continuing to walk toward the officer, swinging the chain. Pitts used a Taser but it didn't stop Denham, forcing Pitts to retreat for a block and a half while he continued to order Denham to drop the chain and get on the ground. The DA's office added Pitts warned Denham he would shoot if he continued to refuse. Pitts eventually fired two rounds, striking Denham.Denham later died at the hospital. The Stephen's office says a toxicology report showed phencyclidine (PCP), cannabinoids, and methamphetamine in his system."Based on these circumstances, Pitts fired at Denham in his own defense," the office's review states. "He therefore bears no state criminal liability for his actions."In addition to clearing Pitts of any criminal wrongdoing, the DA's office released nearly two minutes of body camera footage from the incident. 1751

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Zoo biologists are part of a team of researchers that have rescued the last remaining southwestern pond turtles from an area ravaged by the Bobcat Fire. The researchers spend the last couple of weeks finding and recovering the reptiles from the San Gabriel Mountains. The area, which was scorched by the Bobcat Fire, from Sept. 6 until early November, is now at risk of mudslides and debris flows from rain, which could impact the turtles."Our role as conservationists is to provide refuge and care for wildlife in trouble," said Kim Gray, curator of herpetology and ichthyology, San Diego Zoo Global. "We are happy to make a home for these pond turtles until their home in the mountains can be made safe for them and their offspring."The southwestern pond turtle is now rare in Southern California and faces risks to its survival, including habitat loss, invasive nonnative predators and competitors.Over the two weeks, researchers rescued eight southwestern pond turtles. The turtles will be cared for at the San Diego Zoo until their habitat is made after this year’s rainy season. When their habitat is secure, they will be returned. 1173
