SAN DIEGO (KGTV/CNS) - A San Diego mom is hoping the county's new plan to provide more affordable housing will help keep her off the street. Leticia Rodriguez, her mom, and two kids have been living in Rodriguez's van the last several months, but right now the van is in the shop. They're hoping to get into the San Diego Rescue Mission. It would be their first time sleeping at a shelter."You have to come back at  5 ' o'clock and line up and you know, wait to get in, every day, until you get a bed," said Rodriguez. Rodriguez makes  an hour as a team leader at Jack N' The Box. She's been looking for a place she can afford for more than a year. "You can get a studio for 0 then you're lucky, but then they say how many are you? Then they say, that's too many," said Rodriguez. Tuesday the San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to set up a million dollar trust fund for the county to use to invest in affordable housing. The vote followed a brief presentation by staff detailing the housing-related hurdles in the San Diego region, including that more than 3,500 affordable units have been lost in the last 20 years.Staff said there are now more than 9,000 homeless people on any given night, a 5 percent 1309

San Diego (KGTV)- In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, hundreds are giving back in the best way they can. This morning volunteers rolled up their sleeves to clean up Balboa Park. 14-year-old Maya Hundley spent the morning planting flowers with her family at the MLK Day of Service Interfaith Project. "I think it's important any day to help out, especially today," says Hundley. "Instead of being lazy or taking it as an extra day off, you can use that time to make a difference in the world." More than 300 volunteers spent the morning cleaning up Balboa Park. "People are doing anything from planting trees and flowers to raking leaves and hauling brush," says Melissa Spence with First United Methodist Church of San Diego. The city's parks and recreation department was on hand, showing volunteers which areas needed the most care. The MLK Day of Service Interfaith Project includes Christians, Jews, Muslims, and Unitarians working together. This is the 11th year the group has come together for the event. "As people of different faiths, we recognize that God gave us this earth we're being called to care for it in the best way that we can," says Spence. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A bill requiring California prosecutors to erase or reduce tens of thousands of marijuana criminal convictions was approved by the state Legislature on Wednesday and now awaits Gov. Jerry Brown's signature.When voters passed Proposition 64 in 2016 to allow adult use of marijuana, they also eliminated several pot-related crimes. The proposition also applied retroactively to pot convictions, but provided no mechanism or guidance on how those eligible could erase their convictions or have felonies reduced to misdemeanors.The Senate passed a bill Wednesday that would make that happen.RELATED: What to know about 2018's new marijuana laws in CaliforniaThe bill orders the state Department of Justice to identify eligible cases between 1975 and 2016 and send the results to the appropriate prosecutor.The state DOJ estimates that almost 220,000 cases are eligible for erasure or reduction.
