CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV)— More than three business owners in Coronado have been hit by criminals using fake 0 bills to make small purchases.Sam Frederick’s shop, Little Sam’s Island and Beach Fun on Coronado Island has all things fun. But last Saturday, fun was not on his mind, after somebody took advantage of his new employee.A man tried to buy three towels with a 0 bill. But at the last minute, he changed his mind to buy just one.“He realized that my guy was going to cash the 0 bill, so he puts two towels back, and he got more money that way,” Frederick said. MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodThe clerk took the bill, gave the man in change, and left. When Frederick checked the cash register that night, he said something was not right. “I knew right there… The Ben Franklin wasn’t in shape at all,” he said. Coronado police say he is not alone. Investigators are looking into at least three more counterfeit 0 bill incidents in the last week. Joshua Jordan owns Treasures from the Heart, next door. He too was hit. Then he pulled out a 0 the last minute, very apologetic, saying “can you break 0?” Jordan said. They did. But the incident happened not once, but twice. “He saw that it was an easy mark, went to the next store, came back again, and bought a little more to look better,” Jordan said. He did not use the change he got from the first transaction but paid with another fake 0 bill with the same serial number. The bill was immediately rejected by the bank the next day.“I know maybe to some companies, 0 is not much. But to me it really hurts,” Jordan said. As Coronado Police continues their investigation, they are also encouraging business owners to check each bill with a pen and a black light machine, ask for ID, or call them if they are suspicious. “Right now we are working in cooperation with the secret service to see if this is an isolated incident in Coronado, or part of a larger trend in San Diego as a whole,” Det. COLUMBIA, S.C. — Rapper Kanye West used part of his first event since declaring himself a presidential candidate to rant against historical figure Harriet Tubman. West said the Underground Railroad conductor “never actually freed the slaves, she just had them work for other white people." West's comments drew shouts of opposition from some in the crowd gathered Sunday in North Charleston, South Carolina. His appearance was marked by a lengthy monologue touching on topics from abortion and religion to international trade and licensing deals. At one point he said he and wife Kim Kardashian had considered terminating their first pregnancy. Several sources report West became tearful during the speech Sunday, explaining how a message from God changed his mind and he got a call from Kardashian saying they were going to have the baby. North West was born in 2013. Whether West is actually seeking the nation’s highest office remains a question. Last week he met the requirements to appear on Oklahoma's presidential ballot. An Oklahoma elections spokeswoman says a West representative submitted paperwork and the ,000 filing fee Wednesday for the state's Nov. 3 ballot. A West adviser told New York Magazine that West was out, but TMZ reports his campaign filed with the Federal Election Commission. Critics are calling Sinclair's promos pro-Trump propaganda. Now the company is defending the initiative, and calling it something much more mundane: A "corporate news journalistic responsibility promotional campaign."Sinclair, America's largest operator of local TV stations, is in the spotlight after a controversial promo video went viral over the weekend.Some staffers say they're embarrassed by the promos and concerned about their own credibility as journalists. A few local anchors and reporters are even reacting publicly, risking the ire of management.But Sinclair senior vice president of news Scott Livingston is defending the promos as a "well-researched journalistic initiative focused on fair and objective reporting."In an internal memo obtained by CNNMoney, Livingston slammed what he called "misleading, often defamatory stories" about the company. Some of the language echoes President Trump's anti-media messaging. COLTON, Calif. (KGTV) - At least five people died Friday afternoon in a fiery crash on Interstate 10 in the San Bernardino County community of Rialto, KABC reported.The California Highway Patrol indicated at least three vehicles and two trucks were involved in the crash that left wreckage on both sides of the freeway at Riverside Ave. about 1 p.m.A big rig heading west veered toward the median, crashed through the center divider and burst into flames, KTLA reported. The truck kept moving across eastbound lanes, striking several vehicles.Five people were killed. The truck driver received only minor injuries and another driver was able to walk away from the crash.After a nearly 16-hour shutdown of the highway, all lanes were reopened Saturday morning, KABC said. The cause of the crash is under investigation.Check traffic HERE.  865

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield has recently taken to speaking out against police violence and racial injustice. Mayfield took his activism further, writing a letter Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt and members of the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board, seeking the commutation of Julius Jones, a man on death row fighting to prove his innocence in a 1999 murder.Jones was 19 years old at the time of his arrest. He was a student at the University of Oklahoma going for an engineering degree and working towards a basketball scholarship.In the summer of 1999, a 45-year-old man named Paul Howell was shot and killed during a carjacking in Edmond, Oklahoma. Jones was the prime suspect in his death, despite his claims he was home playing games and eating dinner with his family.Howell’s family was inside of his car when he was shot and killed, and described the suspect as a Black man wearing a stocking cap and a bandana across his face with “half an inch of hair” sticking out from the cap. Jones’ hair was shaved down at the time of the shooting.Jones’ co-defendant, Christopher Jordan, is believed to have set Jones up for the crime. After pleading guilty, he served 15 years in prison and is now free. Jones was sentenced to the death penalty and 40 years.While the DNA results from a bandana and a weapon found in the house have been used both as evidence of Jones’ guilt and his innocence, it was what took place during the trial that has caused celebrities and organizations—including John Legend, Kim Kardashian, Black Lives Matter, and most recently Mayfield— to speak up and fight for Jones’ commutation, stating that racial discrimination fueled the conviction of what they believe to be an innocent man.In addition to claims of racially-fueled language from officers handling Jones’ case during the court proceedings, the state dismissed all prospective Black jurors but one. One of the 12 jurors who convicted Jones and sentenced him to death confessed that another juror described the trial as “a waste of time” and said that “they should just take the n***** out and shoot him behind the jail.”Jones has maintained his innocence for nearly 20 years."As God is my witness, I was not involved in any way in the crimes that led to Howell being shot and killed," Jones said in his clemency report. "I have spent the past 20 years on death row for a crime I did not commit, did not witness and was not at."Mayfield, who played football at Oklahoma University, wrote the letter on behalf of Jones a few weeks ago, asking for the pardon and parole board, as well as the governor, to review the commutation application with “fairness and compassion.” 2670
