United States Army recruiters around the country will participate in the Army's first nationwide, virtual hiring campaign with the goal of attracting 10,000 new soldiers over three days next week. The campaign will last from June 30-July 2, according to a news release from the U.S. Army.“This is a concerted effort across those three days that really gets everybody in the Army on board," LTC Brittany Simmons, Commander, Indianapolis Army Recruiting Battalion told theindychannel.com. "So you’re going to see the commanding generals at Fort Bragg, Fort Hood, Fort Drum, all of them are going to be involved," Simmons continued. "And so it’s that total Army effort. And while there’s an element that’s ambitious with us, that’s what the Army likes. We like a good challenge and we’re going to go forward, and it’s going to really help us set up the pool of applicants that will help us get to where we need to by the end of our fiscal year.”Throughout Army National Hiring Days, the U.S. Army will look to hire full-time and part-time soldiers in 150 different career fields ranging from combat roles to support positions in accounting and finance, logistics, engineering and technology. The Army will offer cash bonuses or four-year scholarships for people who enlist during the three-day event. This story was originally reported on theindychannel.com. 1360

TUSCON, Ariz. – Nearly million worth of meth, cocaine and heroin were found in a vehicle along the U.S.-Mexican border over the weekend, according to U.S. Border Patrol.Agents say two 18-year-olds were arrested Saturday after attempting to smuggle the narcotics near Rio Rico.Officials say agents were patrolling the desert north of the border when they saw several people emerge from brush and load packages into a parked truck near Pe?a Blanca Lake before departing back into the desert.Minutes later, border patrol says agents conducted a traffic stop on a red Chevrolet Silverado in the area. Concealed inside the vehicle, they reportedly found 57 packages of suspected meth, cocaine and heroin, with a street value estimated at about ,889,600.The truck’s driver and passenger, both residents of Rio Rico, were arrested and ultimately turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration, along with the seized drugs, to face federal drug charges, according to border patrol.Agents say they were unable to locate the individuals that emerged from the brush. 1072

Two pilots on different aircraft recently reported seeing unidentified flying objects in the airspace near them.A commercial pilot for American Airlines, who was flying a passenger jet Feb. 24 over Arizona, reported to Albuquerque Center air traffic control between 3:30 and 4:15 p.m. local time that an object seen?flying at 40,000 feet was unidentifiable and had a big reflection, according to The Huffington Post. Audio of the conversation between the pilot and?air traffic control was released by the Federal Aviation Administration to a website called The Drive, a product of Time Inc. In it, the jet's pilot is heard saying the UFO was flying the opposite direction of the airplane at least 2,000 to 3,000 feet above the plane. The FAA did not have knowledge of anything expected to fly above the jet when the UFO incident occurred. The pilot was asked whether he thought it was a Google balloon, and he said, "doubtful," The Drive's military and aviation correspondent reported.Another commercial pilot flying nearby at the same time also reported seeing an unidentifiable object, just after the first pilot's report. He said he didn't know what the object was, but it wasn't an airplane, and the path was going the opposite direction of his plane. 1341

UNION, Ky. — A 17-year-old girl faked a school shooting threat at Ryle High School in Union, Kentucky because she didn't want to go to class on Wednesday, according to a news release from the Boone County Sheriff's Office. Classes are still on, but she'll get her wish. The girl was arrested Tuesday night and booked into the Campbell County Juvenile Detention Center. The threat, which deputies said she made herself but pretended to have received via Snapchat, was the fourth of its kind targeted at Ryle in just two days. Three other teenagers — two 15-year-olds and one 17-year-old — were arrested Monday for making "terroristic threats."The girl's mother called police Tuesday night, Sgt. Philip Ridgell wrote in the news release. She believed her daughter had just received a threat reading, "since nobody showed up to school today just sat till tomorrow, i'm going to drive past the cafeteria during 3rd lunch and just shoot non stop."In reality, Ridgell said, the girl had created it. Deputies who questioned her about the threat noted inconsistent responses and ultimately learned she had posted it to her own Snapchat story because she did not want to go to school. After confessing, she tried to flee on foot. Deputies caught her, arrested her and took her to the detention center."We will continue with classes tomorrow as normal," Boone County Schools wrote in an emailed statement. "We will continue to have additional staff and law enforcement on campus to help our staff and students feel safe." 1553

VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. – Some public lands are closing again, but not because of the coronavirus, because of litter and huge crowds.Paradise Falls, a hidden waterfall in Ventura County, California, was packed on Memorial Day weekend. Brian Stark, Administrator for the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency says, "the pool under the falls is only slightly larger than the residential swimming pool, so imagine your swimming pool in your yard with several thousand people coming through it in a day.”He says those thousands of people also brought thousands of pounds of trash to the 40-foot waterfall.“People were trampling the wetland vegetation to get to the other side, we were taking multiple truckloads of garbage out daily and people brought a BBQ there and we have high fire danger areas,” said Stark. When we asked what kind of trash was left behind, Stark said, "people brought picnics and normally a hiker might bring an energy bar, not a box of pizza.”They treated the small waterfall like it was their personal space. And they stayed. So, the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency, which looks after the falls and the surrounding park, decided to close the falls indefinitely. A fence sits around it now, and rangers routinely check in. Initially, police had to turn people away.‘“We just didn’t have the capacity to manage those crowds while protecting the resource.”Paradise Falls wasn't the only area with problems that weekend. Galveston Island in Texas, posted on Social Media that their team collected 156,000 pounds of trash on its beaches. Helen Lowman, President and CEO of "Keep America Beautiful," says it's a problem that the organization has been managing for 68 years.“Everyone had been inside for so long and it was just a chance to enjoy nature and get out and get sun, be on the beach, take a hike in a park, have a picnic,” she said. What was left was a record amount of trash. Volunteers in Cocoa Beach, Florida, picked up 13,000 pounds in three days.“They said it was more than they’ve ever seen.”And, if you're seeing gloves and personal protective equipment littered everywhere these days, you're not alone."There are ways to dispose of these things that are safe and don’t leave it on the ground for somebody else to pick up.”Lowman reminds us that all that trash eventually ends up in our waterways, which all lead to our oceans.“80% of litter that’s in the ocean started on land, you don’t have to throw something on the beach in order for it to end up in the ocean,” said Lowman. She says there's a good rule of thumb when you're headed out to enjoy public lands. If you pack it in, pack it out. Take home whatever you took with you.“Please take care of our natural spaces, it’s all we’ve got and right now these spaces are more important than they’ve ever been.”As for Paradise Falls, they hope to bring it back someday.“We exist to help people get outside and have the feelings they feel in the outdoors but there’s a time and place for every activity and we’re not set up with facilities to handle large numbers of people for large amounts of time.”It's a reminder to protect our outdoors, so they remain open for us all. 3166
