Now, one group of researchers says the list may be scaring people unnecessarily.Laura Molina works to make sure her customers at her community market, Growhaus, pick the best fruits and veggies.“We try to bring everything organic and local,” Molina said.It ends up being a mix. So, when customers ask her how to pick between organic and conventional, she often gives them advice she takes herself.“Everything that I can peel, I can buy, like, not organic,” Molina explains. “But like lettuce, mushrooms, apples, I try to buy them organic.”But is there a set rule for choosing? Every year, a nonprofit called the Environmental Working Group puts out the "Dirty Dozen," a list of the 12 fruits and veggies most contaminated by pesticide residue.This year, apples, celery and tomatoes made the list.However, a group of scientists say these foods may not be as dirty as some once thought, and the way the EWG analyzed the data is flawed.“The benefit of fruits and vegetables far outweighs the potential concern of this pesticide residue,” registered dietitian Jessica Crandall said.Crandall says consumers would have to eat a lot of a certain fruit or vegetable to be affected by any pesticides.“You would have to be eating so many cups,” Crandall said. “Like 400-plus cups of strawberries per day in order for that residue to be a potential concern if you're an adult. And if your kid, needs to be around 200 cups per day of strawberries.”Those concerned about pesticides in produce can visit safefruitsandveggies.com to check pesticide levels in any produce item.Ultimately, the decision shouldn't be based on a list.“I believe it is a personal choice,” Crandall said. “And so if you like the way that it tastes, better then to go ahead and consume. GREELEY, Colorado – Weld County’s top prosecutors and Frederick police held a news conference Monday afternoon to brief the media on more details of the Chris Watts case after he was sentenced earlier in the day to several life terms in prison without the possibility of parole in the deaths of his pregnant wife and young daughters.Flanked by fellow prosecutors, Frederick Police Department representatives and the county coroner, 19th Judicial District Attorney Michael Rourke started the news conference by thanking the law enforcement agencies involved in the case as well as the family of Shanann Watts for “serving justice” in her name and those of her two daughters and unborn child.Much of what Rourke and his deputy district attorney, Steve Wrenn, discussed at the news conference centered on new details that had not been released about the case, the autopsy reports for the three which were released after the news conference, and what will happen next for Chris Watts as he makes his way to prison for the rest of his life.Rourke said that he doesn’t believe Watts will ever truthfully answer as to why he killed his family though his parents pleaded with him during sentencing Monday to come clean and atone in the future.He said that Watts’ attorneys approached prosecutors first about the plea deal and that he did not accept until after speaking with Shanann’s family, the Rzuceks, in North Carolina beforehand. The Rzuceks addressed Watts and the case in court Monday.“That was a conversation I was only going to have with them face to face,” Rourke said.He reiterated that he and the family had talked about the state of the death penalty in Colorado and its future. Rourke said that he and the family believed that even if Watts were to receive the death penalty, neither were sure that he would ever be executed in their lifetimes.“Sandra (Shanann’s mother) leaned across the table and said, ‘Why haven’t you done that?’” Rourke said of accepting the plea deal. “That helped the family get some needed closure.”Rourke said he also spoke with Judge Marcelo Kopcow Sunday ahead of the sentencing hearing to give him more information, including the unredacted affidavit, so that the court could impose a “just and fair sentence under the circumstances.” 2278

HONG KONG – Scientists at the University of Hong Kong claim to have the first evidence of someone being reinfected with the coronavirus that causes COVID-19.They said Monday that genetic tests show a 33-year-old man returning to Hong Kong from a trip to Spain in mid-August had a different strain of the virus than the one he’d previously been infected with in March.The man had mild symptoms the first time and none the second time, so his previous infection may have helped prevent serious illness.Experts say waning immunity could have implications for vaccine development and that the case shows the need to keep up social distancing and other prevention measures.Dr. Kelvin Kai-Wang To, who led the group of scientists, told The Associated Press that it’s unknown how many people can get reinfected, but there are probably more out there.Even if someone can be infected a second time, it’s not known if they have some protection against serious illness, because the immune system generally remembers how to make antibodies against a virus it’s seen before. 1069
