GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Wendy Marble has found a big positive to all the cans and bottles piling up during the pandemic."I had all these pop cans sitting around, of course from when they shut the machines down, end of March," Marble told FOX 17 News. "And I decided what can I do with them to you know, make something good come out of them."Marble came up with the idea of using the bottle deposit money to donate a check to Mackenzie's Animal Sanctuary."I love animals, I always have," she said. "I just wanted to help them, and it meant something to me to be able to do it."Marble started with the cans she had at home but then decided to also throw the idea out on Facebook.The response was overwhelming."That went crazy. I had people blowing up my phone," she explained. "I had 50,000 cans at my house at one time."That's when Marble enlisted the help of her best friend Tama Allerding; knowing it would take some time for the pair to return all the cans due to daily bottle return limits."When she showed me the cans for the first time I thought I was gonna pass out," recalled Allerding. "Her whole garage was just full."But, it didn't take very long for the money to start adding up.Marble was able to drop off her first check to Mackenzies for just over ,500 dollars."And then I thought, why am I stopping? There are still people that don't want their cans," said Marble."So I got them another thousand and dropped that off."Autumn Russell-Hubert, the General Manager at Mackenzie's, said the money is a big help."Everybody's just stockpiling cans, and for her to go and actually take pop cans in and collect them for Mackenzie's and other rescues, we just thought it was amazing," she said. "Right now with Covid, there's a lot of dogs starting to be relinquished, so that money helps us, help more dogs in need."Marble hasn't slowed down. She's continued to collect cans all over West Michigan, raising money for several other animal rescues."I think probably by the end of November, I will be at [,000 dollars raised]," Marble explained. "It didn't cost me anything other than gas, of course, to pick them up."Marble isn't sure how long that she will be collecting cans, but is passionate about helping animals in need."I'm doing it for the animals, I'm wanting to help," she said. "I really loved being able to help. It made me feel good to be able to do this. HIGHLAND, Calif. (AP) — Southern California authorities say a man who came to the rescue of people in a burning mobile home was found dead in the wreckage.The fire erupted early Saturday morning in the Highland area of San Bernardino County.Cal Fire says arriving firefighters found four occupants had been evacuated from the mobile home but the rescuer perished.The county coroner's office says the body was found in the debris after the flames were extinguished.The coroner's office did not immediately identify the victim, but family members told KTLA-TV he was 25-year-old Albert Madrid.His sister, Melissa Enriquez, says her brother chose to go in and help, and she hopes he is remembered for that. 711

Health experts aren't just asking everyone to have a scaled back Thanksgiving. They're doing it themselves.“Last year and the year before, we had between 20 and 30 people at our Thanksgiving table. It's absolutely my hands down favorite holiday," said Dr. Richard Besser, a former CDC director and the current CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. "This year, they're going to be three of us. There's me, my wife and one of our sons.” Besser says he won’t be seeing his parents in person. They're in their 90s.The doctor says Thanksgiving is different than holidays over the summer or Halloween, because there is already stress on health care systems.“But just thinking about all of the people who will have other health care problems, people with diabetes and heart disease, someone who has chest pain and can't get into the hospital, people who may have cancer and aren't getting treated or screened,” he said.Besser says Americans have to do all they can to push through these next few months until there’s a vaccine around.“Now, I'm sorry. I know a lot of people would like to get together. But remember, we really truly are talking now about being in a final stretch towards a vaccine,” said Besser.Communicable diseases expert and college professor Jill Roberts, her oncologist husband and daughter will be the only ones in their home on Thanksgiving, as well.They've been playing it safe this entire time, so Roberts’ husband doesn't put any of his cancer patients at risk.“I'm definitely concerned about Thanksgiving. I want people to, you know, be aware that it's a risk, protect the people who are the most vulnerable,” said Roberts.Experts have mentioned this before but it's worth repeating. If you are having others over or going somewhere where you don't live, the fewer people the better. Eat outside or open the windows in the house. GRAND COUNTY, Colo. — In the span of just over 12 hours, a wildfire burning west of Denver grew in size sixfold, reaching nearly 200,000 acres and forcing evacuations in Grand County and the total closure of Rocky Mountain National Park.Between Wednesday evening and Thursday afternoon, the East Troublesome fire exploded from a size of 19,086 to about 170,000 acres — making it the second-largest wildifre in state history. The top four largest wildfires in state history have all occurred this year."We planned for the worst," Grand County Sheriff Brett Schroetlin said Thursday. "This is the worst of the worst of the worst."Much of the fire growth is due to the weather, terrain and beetle-kill lodgepole pine, according to the incident management team. An incident commander for the fire said Thursday morning that the fire expanded 20 miles north of Granby and Grant Lake into Rocky Mountain National Park.A Red Flag Warning is in effect until 6 p.m., and winds are expected make the fire extremely active Thursday, according to the incident management team.Just before 9 a.m. Thursday, a spokesperson from Rocky Mountain National Park announced the entire park had closed to visitors due to the fires west of the Continental Divide. Air quality is hazardous within the park.The entire town of Grand Lake was evacuated Wednesday, along with all residents north, west and along Highway 34. Evacuees were told to go south on Highway 34, if possible.Around 1 a.m. on Thursday in a Facebook video, Schroetlin explained just how difficult the day had been."I have a message," he said. "I'm not even sure what those words are. Today (Wednesday) has been an extremely, extremely challenging day for our community. We knew this fire was here. We knew the impacts of it. We looked at every possible potential for this fire. We never, ever expected 6,000 acres per hour to come upon our community."He said the winds were strong and as a result, the fire's behavior was strong. They've never experienced challenges like Wednesday, he said. However, the community stepped up."As we drive around this northern part of Grand County, I don't know what we'll see in the morning, to be honest," he said. "But you know what? Together, as a community, we're going to get through this."Schroetlin said authorities made "some incredible rescues" on Wednesday, including an incident where deputies were able to rescue four loggers whose vehicle had caught fire on a county road.High winds followed by a cold front are expected Thursday. Hackers who were able to take control of at least a dozen high-profile Twitter accounts and tweet messages calling for Bitcoin solicitations gained access to the accounts by targeting Twitter employees, the social media site said Wednesday evening.According to Twitter's support account, the hackers "successfully targeted some of our employees with access to internal systems and tools." They then posted messages seeking Bitcoin solicitations — with a promise to return double the amount — on a series of high-profile Twitter accounts.CNN reports that the Bitcoin wallet included in the tweets is in fact, real and that those conducting the scam have received more than 0,000 in Bitcoin. 700
