(KGTV) - A speeding U-Haul truck turned a neighborhood near La Mesa into a dumping ground Saturday afternoon. Along Tropico Drive, the sound of a speeding vehicle - and then a loud thud - startled Steve Haase in his driveway.  In the middle of the road was a couch, carpet padding, tile and a painting.    Haase lives on a cul-de-sac, so he knew the vehicle would have to come back around.  Haase walked into the road, and saw a mid-sized U-Haul truck.  He saw two men in their early 20s inside, laughing."They're coming down the street and I put my hand up.  They stop, but they get close, so I get out of the way. (KGTV) - The family of an 11-year-old boy who was killed in the Easter bombings in Sri Lanka held a celebration of life ceremony in Lakeside Wednesday night.They gathered on a trail in Oak Oasis County Park to remember Kieran Shafritz de Zoysa, on what would have been his 12th birthday.About a mile down the trail, they unveiled a new bench with a plaque in his memory, telling future hikers to “Be like Kieran.”“Kieran’s mindset was always about helping others,” said Alex Arrow, his father who lives in Lakeside.“He was the greatest ray of light that my life has ever seen,” said Dhulsini de Zoysa, Kieran’s mother.Both parents described him as curious, intelligent and empathetic.“He was just a sponge. He took in everything regardless of the topic,” said his mother.Arrow said his son had dreams of becoming a neuroscientist, with the goal of finding a cure for Alzheimer's disease. “I also grieve for what the world lost,” said Arrow. “That piece of shrapnel from the suicide bomber struck down a future champion against the unknowns of the brain.”In total, 259 people were killed in a series of coordinated bombings on April 21 in the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo. 1202

LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Protesters gathered at the La Mesa Police Department Tuesday evening, once again calling for more transparency and accountability from the department. The protest came just a few days after the department announced that former LMPD officer Matt Dages was no longer employed with the department. Dages was the officer caught on video during the arrest of Amaurie Johnson in May. The charges against Johnson were later dropped. Activists say the department's statement about Dages' employment was vague. They want the former officer charged and arrested.In a press conference hours before the protest, Johnson said he wants equality and will keep fighting for change until it happens. The protest remained peaceful; officers did detain a counter-protester but later told ABC 10News he was released after determining no crime had been committed. 877

(KGTV) - Three dozen scuba divers resumed their search Tuesday for the Canadian girl believed to have drowned in the San Vicente Reservoir.The 12-year-old girl was on a ski boat with six people, including her parents and younger sister, Saturday afternoon when she fell in the water and did not surface.Search teams later found the girl’s damaged life jacket five feet from the boat.RELATED: Search for missing 12-year-old at San Vicente Reservoir continues“The child was at the front of the boat. They were pulling an inflatable behind with the adults. As they come down on speed, the bow of the boat kind of slows and dips, and the child fell overboard,” Sgt. Bryan Brecht of the San Diego Police, Beach Team and Harbor Unit, said. The rescue became a recovery mission hours after the girl disappeared.Although the reservoir is extremely clear, with 20-foot visibility, there are bushes, trees and rocks below the water line, officials said.36 divers from the U.S. Border Patrol, Navy, San Diego Fire Department lifeguards, City of San Diego lake rangers, San Diego Harbor Police and the San Diego Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to the scene Tuesday morning.Crews also have the assistance of technology from the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, City of San Diego Public Utilities Department, and Teledyne SeaBotix.Among the resources are three human remains search dogs on boats with the San Diego Sheriff’s Department.An AMR ambulance crew was placed on standby to assist in any medical emergencies.
