Amid treasures on display from Africa, Selemani Sikasabwa feels right home.“My ancestors used some of them,” he said.Selemani is part of the Global Guides program at the Penn Museum in Philadelphia.“I share my own stories,” he said.He’s one of seven guides offering tours of galleries, with exhibits that represent the regions they come from: Africa, the Middle East, along with Mexico and Central America. Some are immigrants, while others are refugees, like Selemani.He fled his home in the Democratic Republic of Congo and spent 19 years in Tanzania as a refugee, before coming to the U.S. five years ago.“I left my country because of the war,” he said. “There’s war in my country.”For the museum, the program offers a chance to back up their collections with real-life experiences.“The more I talk about this, the more it occurs to me that this is kind of a no-brainer,” said Ellen Owens, the Penn Museum’s director of engagement.She said the museum found the Global Guides helped attract 300 more visitors, just in the last three months. Owens added that about a half-dozen other museums have reached out to them--including the Metropolitan Museum in New York City--to learn more about their Global Guides program.“We really wanted people to feel more connected to our objects,” she said. “When objects are so old – 5,000, 7,000 years old -- it's really hard to bridge the gap between now and life now, and life way back then.”The Global Guides program got its start in 2018 in the Mideast Gallery. Last year, they were able to expand the program to other galleries, including the Africa gallery.For Selemani, it’s a chance to talk about things on display from his home country, like one large, curved drum -- a type he’s seen used before.“It’s a big drum,” he said, “and I call that drum a ‘radio station without microphone.’”He calls it that because the sound generated by beating on the drum can travel up to 10 miles, so the drum is used to communicate messages from village to village. It’s a detail that visitors might not realize were it not for Selemani, who feels grateful for the chance to talk about it.“I’m happy in the United States, because I’m free,” he said. “I work any time I want to go to work, and I feel safe where I’m living.”It is a way of living and sharing his home culture in his new home. 2332

A voluntary recall has been expanded to include three types of organic nut butter that was sold in more than a dozen states.According to the Food and Drug Administration, Inspired Organics LLC issued a recall for all jars of peanut butter, tahini butter and almond butter due to a possible listeria contamination.The release expanded on an earlier recall earlier this month for jars of sunflower butter and specific lots of almond butter.Those who purchased the jars are asked to either dispose of them or return them. A storm that's intensifying along the Southeast coast Monday will rapidly strengthen and move northward, delivering heavy bursts of rain, strong winds and dangerous rip currents up and down the East coast this week.This system is forecast to track across central Florida and into the Atlantic overnight Monday and into Tuesday morning. Heavy rain is forecast across much of northern Florida, with totals up to 2 inches predicted.Extreme rain in the CarolinasThis storm will quickly begin to strengthen as it tracks up and along the East coast, impacting the Carolinas Tuesday. Within a 12-hour period beginning Tuesday morning, the winds will essentially double in strength along the Carolina coast and the rain will increase as the storm deepens in its central pressure.Sustained winds will swirl at 25 to 35 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph possible along the Carolina coastline through Wednesday morning. Heavy rain and strong northeasterly winds off the coast will lead to coastal flooding, especially in flood-prone areas. Rain totals of up to 4 inches are possible.Rip currents will also be a danger along the Southeast coast Monday, where the National Weather Service has issued a Rip Current Statement from St. Simons, Georgia, south to Jupiter, Florida. The NWS says there is a high rip current risk through Monday evening and "it should be noted that almost 300 surf rescues were reported by beach authorities this past weekend."Impacts to the Northeast could be minimal or majorBy Wednesday morning this coastal low will begin to affect areas of the Northeast from Long Island to Maine. Rain and gusty winds are the main impacts along the coast, where 1-2 inches of precipitation is forecast and winds of 20-30 mph with higher gusts are possible.The impacts to the Northeast could still change, depending on how close to the coast the storm tracks. The European model has the storm tracking closer to the coast and is showing more significant effects, including higher winds and more torrential rain. New York could see wind gusts up to 25 mph Tuesday evening and up to an inch of rain. Boston could see wind gusts up to 35 mph and 1-2 inches of rain through Wednesday.The American model has the storm tracking farther off the coast, with less of an effect on coastal cities. However, the impacts over the open ocean are expected to be much more significant. Hurricane force winds are forecast 100 to 300 miles offshore due east of Hatteras, North Carolina, and Nantucket, Massachusetts. By Tuesday afternoon, offshore waves could build up to 14 to 27 feet before subsiding beginning Wednesday.This storm is a quick mover and it's forecast to exit the Northeast by Wednesday evening, leaving behind gusty winds of up to 25 mph into Thursday for areas of New England. 2785

A student gunman opened fire at a southern California high school Thursday morning, leaving two dead and several others injured, officials said.According to authorities, the male suspect, who is a student at the school, opened fire in the quad at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita around 7:38 a.m. before classes started. Authorities were on scene by 7:40 a.m. after receiving several 911 calls about the shooting. The suspected gunman shot and killed two students, a 16-year-old female a 14-year-old male, and injured three others before shooting himself in the head, police said. He is currently in custody and being treated at a local hospital, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva. Officials say he is in grave condition.Video obtained at the scene showed the suspect taking a .45-caliber semi-automatic pistol from a backpack before shooting the five other students and then himself, said Capt. Kent Wegener of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.The other victims include two females, ages 14 and 15, and a 14-year-old male, police said. They were transported to local hospitals with gunshot wounds.Police are investigating the alleged shooter's home, which is near the school, authorities said at a press conference. Officials also said that Thursday was the student gunman's 16th birthday.The suspected shooter's mother and girlfriend are being interviewed by detectives. Other student witnesses are also still providing information to police.Other schools in the district were placed on lockdown amid the shooting. An Air Transat flight was forced to divert Saturday morning to Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey after reports of a possible fire in the cargo hold, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.Passengers on board the Boeing 737 -- which flew out of Montreal and was bound for Fort Lauderdale, Florida -- evacuated onto the airport's runway via emergency slides, according to FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen.
