MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. – About 250 miles above earth, the International Space Station remains in constant orbit around the planet.“It's an amazing facility,” said retired NASA astronaut Rex Walheim. “It's about the size of a five-bedroom house.”It’s an incredible feat of construction, involving space agencies from multiple countries and astronauts like Walheim, who flew three missions to the International Space Station.“The first portion of the space station program was basically constructing it,” Walheim said. “So, that was what I was most involved with, bringing pieces of the space station, doing spacewalks to bolt new pieces on and to activate them.”In the now 20 years since the space station welcomed the first crew, it’s become a place of valuable research for companies like Techshot.“The people that make the experimental instruments that go in there are people like Techshot,” said Dave Reed of Techshot.We visited Techshot’s facility near the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral.Their work on the space station includes measuring bone loss, for use in developing treatments for osteoporosis.“Understanding osteoporosis is obviously of great interest to people on earth,” Reed said. “So, drug companies have been a lot of our customers.”Techshot also created a “bio fabrication facility,” which was installed on the space station.Using stem cells, the machine can 3D print human cartilage, a process that works best in a zero-gravity space environment. The idea is to eventually be able to 3D print whole organs that could be used in transplants.“It’s in the future, but it’s not as far away as you might think,” Reed said.Among the other things the space station astronauts have helped develop for use here on earth are advanced water purification systems, where they recycle 93% of the water on the station. Astronauts on board have also collected valuable data, like visual images, to help support first responders to natural disasters in the U.S. and around the world.Those are advances that might not be possible without the space station.“Young people today have never known a time when there hasn't been humans in space,” Walheim said. “That's really amazing.”It’s a whole generation who see humans living and working in space as an everyday part of life. 2288

LOXAHATCHEE, Florida — Florida farmers fear they’ll continue to dig themselves further into financial holes because of cheap, subsidized produce coming into the country from Mexico. They don't believe the recently renegotiated trade agreement will change that.“It’s not the outcome that we’ve worked for," said Lisa Lochridge, of the Florida Fruit & Vegetable Association. "We still have a critical problem here in Florida. Family farms that have operated for generations are desperate to seek relief."Over the last couple of decades, Alderman Farms in Palm Beach County has seen big changes in the produce market because of the North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA, which growers believe has allowed cheap, subsidized produce to flood the U.S."The trend is more economic growth here in Mexico and less here in Florida," Jimmy Alderman said.Even organic produce coming from Mexico is cheaper than what Alderman said he produces.“We’ve seen organic prices cheaper than our cost," Jimmy Alderman said. "We cannot maintain that average and be able to be successful.”The inability to compete with cheap produce from Mexico has caused some farms to close up, Lochridge said."We've seen companies in the last couple of seasons, operated for generations, that announced that they're shutting their doors," she said. "We expect more of that to continue if we don't get some trade reform that we need.""Every year two or three more family farms going out of business," Alderman said.Alderman said he was disappointed to hear the renegotiated agreement with Mexico and Canada doesn't include the trade reform for the produce industry he was looking forward to seeing."Unfortunately it feels like we’ve been left by the wayside one more time. We’ve almost been a sacrificial lamb," he said.Lochridge said the Florida Fruit and Vegetable Association wants to see more trade reform put into the new trade agreement to better protect Florida growers. Mack Beggs defended his Texas wrestling state title on Saturday by winning the girls Class 6A 110-pound class, to the chagrin of some of those in attendance in Cypress, Texas, the Dallas Morning News reported. Beggs, who was born female, is a transgender male who is only allowed to wrestle against girls. Texas' University Interscholastic League requires that athletes compete in the gender listed on their birth certificate. Beggs told the Dallas Morning News that he has not gone through any gender reassignment surgeries. But that did not stop those in the crowd from heckling Beggs. "They're saying 'steroids.' They're saying, 'Oh, they're beating up on girls,'" he told the Morning News. "It just comes down to technique and who has the most heart. I put too much blood, sweat and tears, I put too much B.S. into this journey that I wanted to come out on top."If Beggs had his choice, he would be competing against boys. "What can I tell people? I can tell the state legislature to change the policy, but I can't tell them to change it right now," Beggs told reporters. "All I can hope for is that they come to their [senses] and realize this is stupid and we should change the policies to conform to other people in my position."Among those who believe it was not a fair bout was Beggs' semifinal opponent Kayla Fitts, who went 52-0 as a senior for Cypress Ranch High School. "The strength definitely was the difference. I didn't anticipate how strong he was," Fitts told the Morning News."I understand if you want to transition your gender," she added. "I understand that totally. But there's a time and a place."Part of the issue has been that Beggs is taking a low dose of testosterone. MALIBU (CNS) - Santa Ana winds are forecast to pick up more Monday than Sunday and may continue into Wednesday as firefighters battling the deadly Woolsey Fire in Los Angeles and Ventura counties work to hold the blaze within cleared containment lines and officials worry that unburned areas continue to pose potential danger.At last word from Cal Fire, the blaze had burned 85,500 acres and was 15 percent contained by cleared vegetation. The total number of structures threatened remained at about 57,000. The number of structures destroyed held at 177, with hundreds more considered likely. Full containment was expected by Nov. 17. Two people have died and three firefighters have been injured battling the blaze.More than 3,200 firefighters were assigned to the blaze and 22 helicopters worked from above, officials said. A number of air tankers were in use to suppress flames as conditions allowed.Santa Ana winds Monday could be a bit stronger than Sunday and heavier gusts could follow Tuesday,  National Weather Service Meteorologist Curt Kaplan said. Today's wind gusts could last longer into the afternoon as well.Winds in mountain areas could average 50-60 mph and gust to 70 mph Tuesday and foothill and coastal areas are expected to see 35-50 mph winds, Kaplan said.  A Red Flag Warning remained in effect for Los Angeles and Ventura counties through Tuesday, when winds will be strongest in the mornings and early afternoons, giving firefighters a nightly reprieve. LOVELAND, Ohio -- Someone drove through the wall of a sports bar near Cincinnati early Sunday after a fight, according to another patron.The vehicle, a Kia Optima, crashed through a fence, across a patio and into the side of Zappz Sports Bar and Grille in Loveland, Ohio at about 2:30 a.m.Blake Freeman, who was at the bar, said the driver smashed into the building on purpose after being kicked out. Freeman said he arrived moments after that."I was standing there 30 minutes prior to this happening. I had left to go to a friend's house real quick, and as I'm coming back, pulling back in, he was going through the building and that's just kind of when I went in and started helping everybody," Freeman said. 723
