Public health experts say there is little evidence that the protests that erupted after George Floyd’s death caused a significant increase in coronavirus infections. "They’ll force people to not be able to pay for food and pay for home, for somewhere to live. We’re talking about basic necessities and they’re pushing us to the limit.”Gyms are among the sectors ordered to cease all indoor operations after the county moved into the state's purple, or worst, tier. This comes as the county recorded 1,546 new COVID-19 cases Tuesday, a single-day record.San Nicolas makes the case that gyms can open safely and that forcing them to close will not stop the spread. “We haven’t had any issue with it here in the gym. We’ve had over 25,000 check-ins just since June and we’ve had no cases of covid here at the gym.”According to the latest outbreak numbers on the county website, only 0.4% of all cases recorded between June 5 and November 14 have been tied to gyms. However, many public health experts say there is no question gyms should be closed during this most recent surge. "Gyms are one of the riskiest possible businesses," said Dr. Rebecca Fielding-Miller, an epidemiologist who teaches at UC San Diego, in an email to ABC 10News. "By definition, people are breathing heavily in an indoor space, which is a recipe for spread. And while I haven’t been inside a gym since March, I would hazard a guess that gyms that are threatening to defy county orders are also not gyms that are enforcing masking policies. They should absolutely be closed."During the last COVID-19 surge in August, Ramona Fitness Centers became one of the first and only businesses cited and then charged by the District Attorney for remaining open in violation of public health orders. Republicans are considering axing the unpopular provision -- which requires nearly all Americans to have coverage or pay a penalty -- though it's not included in the current House tax reform bill.A CBO score published in December found nixing the mandate would save 6 billion over a decade. While the federal government would lose some revenue from the penalty's elimination, it would make up that and more because fewer people would have federally subsidized policies, the CBO says. Researchers are trying to find new ways to get younger people to donate blood as the pandemic pushes the country's blood supply to critically low levels.The donor pool is aging and younger people aren't stepping up to fill the gaps.For decades, the supply has relied on donors being motivated simply to help others.A recent study looked at the idea of paying people to give blood, something already being done for plasma donations, but not for whole blood. The study found about 80% of college age people would be willing to give blood if they were paid.“A concern might be that payment leads people to be externally motivated to give blood, that they're doing it for the money,” said Christopher France, a psychology professor at Ohio University. “But people are by and large doing this at the beginning because they're also feeling very altruistic. The reality is, we can hold two ideas in our head at the same time. We can say, ‘oh it's nice to get paid for this,’ but we also recognize that we're doing something for our fellow human beings.”France says one way to address that concern is to offer donors options on what to do with the payment. They could keep it or donate it to charity.There's also concerns over getting donors to keep coming back. Payment and reducing fears could help with that.“Not only does reducing fear reduce the risk of feeling faint while they give blood, so they feel better if they have their fear reduced, but it also increases their odds of coming back to give blood again,” said France.In March, the surgeon general made a national plea for more blood donations.Demographic data from a major Texas center suggests the emergency appeal did not help close the age gap. 1711

PROVO, Utah - Things were far from the "friendly skies" on a flight to Provo over the weekend when a fight broke out after a passenger refused to wear a mask.Rylie Lansford shared a video of the altercation that occurred just moments after she boarded the Allegiant flight from Mesa, Arizona, to Provo, Utah, on SaturdayLansford says the fight started after a flight attendant asked a man who had already boarded to wear a face mask that covered his mouth and nose. However, Lansford said the second man continued on a tirade and threatened the original man.At that point, with the flight ready to depart, security was called in to remove the man who refused to wear a mask.As the man got up to be escorted out, Lansford believes he took a punch at the second passenger. A brief physical scuffle occurred and Lansford ran to the front of the plane.Lansford says the flight crew handled the entire situation really well.While the original man was escorted off, the second passenger was not removed from the plane despite his participation in the fight.When contacted by FOX 13, Allegiant reiterated its position on wearing face masks on flights."Face coverings must be made of solid material, fully cover the mouth and nose, fit snugly against the face, and be secured under the chin. Prohibited coverings include those with exhalation valves, holes (such as lace or mesh), neck gaiters, and bandanas. Face shields may be worn in addition to a face covering, but not as an alternative."The flight eventually departed and arrived in Provo without any further incident.According to Mesa Police, 52-year-old Rio James Honaker was charged with disorderly conduct.
