SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A colony of 300,000 bees lives on the roof of the Marriott Marquis in Downtown San Diego, and the hotel says that's perfectly fine with them.In fact, they planned it that way.The bees are part of Bee Leaf USA's Urban Bee Keeping program, which is an effort to help the struggling American Honey Bee population."This is the absolute most fantastic thing we can do for beekeeping at this point," says Travis Wolfe, from Bee Leaf USA."For a corporate entity to onboard something as outlandish as honey bees to offset their carbon footprint is one of the most moving and engaging things that one of these businesses can do," he says.The bees have been on the roof for about five years. They gather pollen in a three-mile radius around the hotel.They also make honey -- lots of it."They make about 7 gallons a year," says Wolfe. "That really is an enormous amount to consume."Fortunately, the hotel's Marina Kitchen and Bar helps use the honey."The ethos of the restaurant is to be as local as possible," says Executive Chef Aron Schwartz. "What could be more local than our roof?"Schwartz has put the honey in seasonal offerings for the last few years. Recently, it's been part of the salad dressing in their tomato and cucumber salad. It's also been featured on the charcuterie board and in a honey almond cake."It's about being restrained," says Schwartz. We're not going to put honey into 16 dishes. We're going to put it in one or two."This month, the bar is adding a honey-infused whiskey to several of its cocktails. They've partnered with Malahat Distillery in Miramar, which is aging their whiskey for six months in barrels coated with honey from the roof of the Marriott."We get a more naturally infused honey flavor out of that than some of the bigger producers who just stir honey into the whiskey," says Bar Operations Supervisor Michael Girard."It tastes amazing. You can smell the honey, you can taste the honey, but it's not a sweet sugar bomb," Girard says.The drinks will be available throughout the summer. Meanwhile, the bees will stay on the roof indefinitely."It really is a true demonstration of fantastic sustainability," says Wolfe. 2179

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Chollas View elementary school was placed on lockdown Wednesday after reports of an armed man nearby.San Diego Police were called to the area of 45th and Market streets at about 9:30 a.m. over the reported suspect. Chollas-Mead Elementary School was placed on lockdown as police searched the area.Officers arrested an armed man at the scene and were searching for a second suspect who fled the scene, believed to possibly be armed as well, police said.Chollas-Mead Elementary's lockdown was lifted as of 11 a.m. while police continued their search.The outstanding suspect is described as a 6-foot-tall black man, in his 20s, last seen wearing a black shirt and light blue pants, SDPD told City News Service. 736

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A European carrier is hoping to transform the way Southern California travels between major cities.FlixBus will start offering service to 10 Southern California cities, including in San Diego, beginning May 31. The service, which has operated within Europe since 2013, is hoping to carve out a presence with discounted ticket prices and some high-tech additions.For a limited time, travelers can snag fares from Los Angeles to Las Vegas for as low as on select dates throughout June, according to the service's website. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A former Yuma Police officer testified Tuesday in his trial for the rape of a woman in Kensington.Jared Elkins, 34, raped his wife’s cousin after a family gathering at her home on Marlborough Drive last year, prosecutors said. The group had been out to dinner, then watched a movie while drinking beer and wine at home.She testified last week, saying she didn’t yell during the alleged attack because Elkins threatened to kill her. His wife was asleep across the hall at the time.After the encounter, the woman said she ran into her mother’s room for help, and they both escaped out a window.At a hospital, the alleged victim's blood-alcohol level was determined to be .09 percent, according to witness testimony.Police said Elkins told them that the sex was consensual and the rape charges were made out of guilt.Elkins told the jury the alleged victim started flirting with him after everyone else went to sleep.“There was mutual flirtations between the two of us and we were being adults,” said Elkins, who testified the woman was “cuddling, almost snuggling” with him.“She said yeah, it was surprising to me; I was excited a younger attractive woman, you know, it kind of confirmed everything on the couch,” Elkins said.Elkins resigned from the Yuma Police Department in 2017. He is facing nine felony counts including forcible rape and could serve 14 years in prison if convicted.City News Service contributed to this report. 1462

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A bill created to improve warehouse working conditions has passed the state's Senate Labor Committee.Assembly Bill 3056, authored by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, ensures warehouse workers can take a restroom break, use a hand-washing station, drink water, or take a legally mandated break without fear of being fired.“We shouldn’t need to write a bill to make sure warehouse workers are able to take a restroom break or wash their hands without being reprimanded. But time and time again, Amazon has shown disregard for the safety of their workers -- even during this ongoing public health crisis,” Gonzalez said.AB 3056 not only applies to Amazon workers, but also to those who work at Target, Walmart, and other retailer warehouses.There has been an exponential rise in online sales leading to several companies adding automated systems to control the workflow. Worker productivity is monitored to determine whether someone has met a specified rate or quota of items pulled.Automated systems generate warnings when too many time-off tasks occur in a worker’s shift, and accumulated warnings can result in workers being fired without a human manager even being involved.The bill would establish civil penalties for an employer of 0 per employee for an initial violation, and ,000 per employee for subsequent violations. 1355
