FALLBROOK (CNS) - One person was killed on Interstate 15 near Fallbrook early Saturday morning in a single-vehicle crash that may have involved alcohol, authorities said.California Highway Patrol officers were first alerted to the crash shortly after 5 a.m. when a truck driver reported seeing a damaged car with an injured person inside stop momentarily at the truck scales in Rainbow before continuing on northbound I-15, CHP Officer Mark Latulippe said.Officers called hospitals in Temecula and Murrieta to check if there were any walk-in patients who could have been involved in the crash, and eventually were alerted that apparent victims had turned up at Rancho Springs Medical Center in Murrieta, according to a CHP incident log.One passenger involved in the crash, identified as a 20-year-old man from Winchester, was pronounced dead at the hospital, Latulippe said. Another passenger, a 21-year-old Torrance man, sustained moderate injuries and the driver, a 23-year-old man also from Torrance, was not injured.The driver was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, Latulippe said.Officers were investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and determined it occurred on northbound I-15 past state Route 76.Evidence suggested that the car struck a call box, lost control toward the center divider and may have returned to the right shoulder before continuing on the freeway, Latulippe said.Officers asked anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call the CHP Border Communications Center at (858) 637-3800. 1538

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) — The victims of Friday's deadly bluff collapse in Encinitas were identified Saturday, as officials reopened the beach but cautioned that the area remained active. Speaking to the press, Encinitas Lifeguard Captain Larry Giles said the site around the collapse will remain taped off from the public as crews continue to assess the stability of the rock."From what we've learned this morning ... the area's still active. [Geotechnical consultant] is concerned about the areas to the side of the current failure failing," Giles said. "The failure is not affecting the structures up top. ESCONDIDO, Calif (KGTV) -- A Palomar Water delivery man is being credited for saving the life of an elderly woman who fell and couldn't get up to call for help. On Monday, Marco Perea showed up to deliver water for his 88-year-old customer in Escondido. When he knocked on her door, he could hear her, but she wouldn't come to the door. After several attempts to get her to open the door, she was able to tell him that she'd fall on Sunday afternoon and hadn't been able to get up since then. Perea called 911 and paramedics and firefighters were able to make entry into the apartment. The woman was rushed to the hospital. Perea says the woman does have a caregiver, but only from Monday through Fridays. The woman's condition is still unknown. 755

Everyone has dealt with some sort of isolation this year due to COVID-19. But for those living with different forms of dementia, isolation can take a much larger toll.“He has Lewy body dementia,” Jaye Kephart explained. She takes care of her husband, Michael, who was diagnosed with this form of dimension five years ago. The illness can cause hallucinations.“I know that the Lewy body is progressing,” she said. With safer at home orders in place, people like Kephart and her husband have been forced to mostly stay home, which she said has made his hallucinations worse.“There is no doubt in my mind that it’s COVID, he also sleeps a lot more. Why not, he’s bored,” she said.Many caregivers are seeing the same thing -- a faster decline they blame on increased isolation.The Washington Post analyzed federal data, which showed more than 134,000 people have died from some form of dementia since March, around 13,000 more than expected.“It’s exactly what I’m seeing with the families I work with. I think that caregivers feel a little bit hopeless and stressed out because they have difficulty at times trying to figure out, what can I do to make this better?,” Jill Lorentz said. She has worked with dementia caregivers and those with dementia for over two decades.“I think the whole thing is just a perfect storm,” she said. Lorentz also has eight family members who have some type of dementia, she currently helps care for her sister.Social stimulation and routine are two ways caregivers help slow the decline -- and that can be done from home to an extent.“Allow them to be a part of the process and use those as engagement pieces and not normal day activities that are kind of out of mind. You don't realize you can utilize that as something in a routine that could be meaningful for that person,” Lorentz said.“I still give him as much to do as I can. He unloads the dishwasher and loads it,” Kephart said.But for those living in a facility, stimulation is even more scarce.“I think there’s been more people in communities that have died from the loneliness of not being able to see or touch their family members then there have been that actually have the COVID diagnosis,” Lorentz said.“We’re asking people to create plans to make sure they are combating social isolation like they are combating COVID right now,” Amelia Shafer said. She is the Executive Director at the Alzheimer's Association of Colorado. She said caregivers should make a plan to participate in virtual support groups to help their loved ones with dementia, but they should focus on their own health, too.“It was no surprise to us that people were feeling isolated, that people were feeling depressed,” Shafer said.“People are dying at higher rates especially people with dementia, and they feel like they've had a huge loss. Everyone around them is feeling that loss too, but it’s different because 90% of what they feel is energy. FALLBROOK (CNS) - The San Diego County Sheriff's Department Saturday released the name of the man who was shot after he allegedly attacked a deputy with a baseball bat early Friday morning.The Sheriff's Department says a deputy was investigating reports of unprovoked assaults with a bat when he found himself under the same kind of attack from 30-year-old Jesus Cirilo Rodriguez.The deputy was sitting in an unmarked car around 4:30 a.m. Friday in the area of Reche and Ranger roads in Fallbrook when the attack happened, sheriff's Lt. Rich Williams said. Deputies had received three reports of unprovoked baseball bat attacks near the area in the last two days -- one on Wednesday evening and two on Thursday evening -- and were conducting surveillance, Williams said.RELATED: Bat-wielding man shot by sheriff's deputyDuring the surveillance, a man -- suspected to be Rodriguez -- walked up and smashed the window of the deputy's vehicle, shattering glass over the interior and prompting the deputy to open fire in self-defense, Williams said.The deputy shot the suspect multiple times, though the suspect was expected to survive.Rodriguez was being held under guard at a local hospital on suspicion of assault of a peace officer with a deadly weapon while his wounds were being treated, and his bail was set at 0,000.
