SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A group of Black student leaders from Poway Unified School District schools met last week with administrators, principals and counselors to discuss ways to address issues of racism and inequality in the district.The students are the presidents of the Black Student Unions at each of PUSD's five high schools.It was the first meeting since the student leaders sent an email asking to see changes in the district to improve the lives of students of color."Making PUSD not just not racist but transparently anti-racist," said Jade Thompson, president of the BSU at Rancho Bernardo High School.Thompason helped write the email, which also talked about the recently created Instagram account "Black in PUSD,” which anonymously details students' experiences with racism."We just think it was a great way to open up people's eyes cause people like to say not in this community," said Thompson.Superintendent Dr. Kim Phelps agrees, saying, "To hold people accountable, including the district and our teachers and everybody ... I'm proud of our students for doing that.”Phelps and Thompson both described the meeting as productive and positive.Among the issues discussed were student education and assemblies addressing racism. The district is also committing to more diverse hiring and curriculum."It's upon us to try to do better; we have a lot of work to do and we want to do better so it’s a growing and learning opportunity for all of us," said Phelps.The students and administrators also talked about the consequences for racism-related incidents.Students said they'd like to see a form of restorative justice instead of just punishment.Although both students and staff agree there's a lot more to be done, they also say the first step is recognizing the problem and starting the conversation."I have a lot of hope for the future of this year and the years to come," said Thompson. 1906
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A choir group from Carlsbad High School got the chance of a lifetime Tuesday night when they took the stage with a legendary rock band.Students from the choir gave themselves an opportunity to perform with award-winning band Foreigner by entering a contest from local radio station KGB-FM in May.“We just sent in a video to KGB, and they gave us a call and said, ‘Hey, you guys won,’” said Carlsbad High choir director Jessie Bullock.“Our teacher told us one day in class and we were like, ‘Oh my gosh. There’s no way! That’s amazing!’” said student Garret Avilez.To the members of Foreigner, public school music education is important.Bassist Jeff Pilson said with tight budgets, public music programs are often the first to get cut. Those programs personally inspired his career.“I started playing the cello when I was in 5th grade and happened to end up with an amazing music teacher,” said Pilson.None of the students were born until decades after Foreigner made a name for itself worldwide. Even the band members admitted the songs are more famous than the band itself.“A lot of these kids don’t realize how many Foreigner songs they know just by being around their parents,” said Pilson.“Some of us want to do performing when we're older and it's just like, being able to get an experience before getting into the industry is really cool,” said student Jamie Polmar.On Tuesday night, the Carlsbad High choir members finally shared the stage with the band at their concert at Chula Vista’s Mattress Firm Amphitheatre, and they sung their hearts out.Foreigner donated 0 to Carlsbad High School’s choir program. 1644

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A former employee of the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System is suing the agency for retaliation after he said he stood up for a co-worker.Ivan Augustino moved to the United States from Sudan and still volunteers with projects for his native country. He started working for MTS in 2015.“It was pretty good,” Augustino said.Augustino worked as a Senior Applications Developer.“I am the main guy that deals with the complicated back end computer codes,” Augustino said.In 2017, he said he made a move that changed everything. It started with a co-worker.“One morning, she walked into my office pretty much in tears,” Augustino said.He said that a co-worker confided to him the Chief Information Officer discriminated against her when she asked about a promotion. The lawsuit filed against MTS claims the CIO told Augustino’s co-worker she was “not qualified for the job because of her age, her marriage and family planning status, and her relationship to an active duty military service member.”“The other question she also asked was, how old are you? You seem like you are at an age where you would be having kids,” Augustino said. It was a shocking conversation.“You know, that is wrong,” Augustino said.After his co-worker told him what happened, he first asked advice from another co-worker who then took it to human resources. Augustino said his co-worker did not want to bring the complaint to HR.“The last thing that anyone within the IT department wants is to take an issue to HR because once you report it to HR, there is going to be retaliation,” Augustino said.And that’s what happened, according to the former MTS employee. Initially, he was concerned how MTS investigated the complaint.“I was expecting someone to at least come and talk to me, but no one spoke to me,” Augustino said.He said retaliation began by the CIO and his direct supervisor.“The way they treated me just changed,” Augustino said.He claimed management suggested they would give him recommendations if he found another job. On another occasion, Augustino said they “mocked [his] English as a second language” in an email. On top of that, he said 98 hours of paid time off promised to him for working overtime on a big project was revoked, along with a promised promotion.“Coming from where I come from, I just felt like I did not even know what to do,” Augustino said.Feeling “degraded” and “intimidated”, he submitted a letter of resignation. However, he said he gave management an option.“If you can address this issue and the executive team and bring what I view as retaliation to a stop, I will pull my resignation,” Augustino said. Instead, he said he was fired and walked out of the building by security. His termination came a little over a month after he voiced his concerns about his female co-worker.A spokesperson for MTS told Team 10: “There is absolutely no validity to any of Mr. Augustino’s claims.”When asked if he would defend his co-worker again, Augustino said “absolutely.”Attorneys Zachary Schumacher and Daniel Goularte represent Augustino."This is absolutely a David versus Goliath situation," Schumacher said.Schumacher said fear is why people don't speak up."I like to compare it to battered wives syndrome, where you essentially have this person or in this case this entity who has this major power and balance who is doing all sorts of awful things and figuratively at least, battering its employees and yet they don't leave. They feel this sense of loyalty," Schumacher said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A former San Diego resident was extradited back to the U.S. to face terrorism charges in federal court.Abdullahi Ahmed Abdullahi, a 34-year-old Canadian national, appeared in court Friday on charges that he conspired with several other Canadian and U.S. citizens to provide material support to terrorists in Syria.Prosecutors said Douglas McCain, known as the first American to die fighting for the Islamic State in 2014, was among those Abdullahi conspired with between 2013 and 2014.Prosecutors say Abdullahi and co-conspirators provided personnel and money to individuals engaged in terrorist activities in Syria, including the killing, kidnapping, and maiming of persons. Officials added that Abdullahi facilitated the travel of at least three Canadian nationals and two U.S. citizens to Syria to join and fight with ISIS.Those individuals were reportedly later killed fighting for ISIS.As part of their plans to provide financial support, Abdullahi's co-conspirators encouraged others to commit crimes, such as theft, prosecutors say. Abdullahi is charged with committing an armed robbery at a jewelry store in Canada to finance travel."Terrorist networks like ISIS cannot exist without supporters," said U.S. attorney Robert Brewer. "Protecting Americans from terrorists is our highest priority, and we will work hard to bring justice to those who provide material support to foreign terror organizations."Abdullahi was detained and deemed a flight risk and danger to the community following his hearing Friday. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The unemployment rate in the San Diego-Carlsbad Metropolitan Statistical Area dropped to 7.7% in October, a drop of 1.2% from September, according to figures released Friday by the state Employment Development Department.According to the EDD, total non-farm employment in San Diego County increased by 21,500 jobs month-over-month -- from 1,386,600 to 1,408,100 -- while farm employment contracted from 9,600 to 9,500.The unemployment rate at this time last year was 3%. The region lost 106,500 non-farm jobs and 400 agricultural jobs over the year.The region's unemployment rate rose to 15% in May during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to EDD data, while data from the San Diego Association of Governments showed rates of nearly 30% unemployment in May.In September, the state's unemployment rate dropped to 9% from 10.8% the previous month, and the nation's decreased to 6.6% from 7.7%.Professional and business services led all industry sectors in month- over-month job gains at 5,200. The majority of job gains were centered in professional, scientific and technical services -- up 3,400 -- while 1,000 jobs were posted in scientific, research and developmental services.Government jobs grew by 4,300, with 2,700 in local and 2,500 in state government gains. The federal government lost 900 jobs locally.Six other industries posted month-over-month job gains: Construction gained 4,100; educational and health services 3,700; leisure and hospitality 3,200; trade, transportation and utilities 900; financial activities 600; and information 100.Mining and logging employment levels remained unchanged.The two industries to lose jobs in October were other services -- down 400 -- and manufacturing -- down 200.Comparing year-over-year, leisure and hospitality continue to top the list in jobs lost, with a total of 47,900 jobs lost since last October -- 35,200 of which came in accommodation and food services.Since the same time last year, government lost 17,100 jobs; trade, transportation and utilities 13,800; other services 10,500; educational and health services 10,000; and manufacturing 6,500; financial activities 3,800; and information 3,400.Professional and business services gained 4,300 new jobs and construction grew payrolls by 2,200 year-over-year. 2294
