Florida Gov. Ron Desantis signed a bill into law Wednesday requiring school districts and charter schools to increase the minimum base salary for full-time classroom teachers to at least ,500.Previously, Florida was ranked 26th in the country for beginning teacher pay. Now, it's among the top five, DeSantis said."I think its definitely going to keep a lot of teachers in the profession and also motivates new ones to come into it," said Garrett Kent, a seventh-grade math teacher at Oak Hammock K-8 School in Port St. Lucie.Kent said the state's new benchmark for teacher pay is a dream come true."It's life-changing," said Kent. "I mean, most teachers don't join for the money, but this just adds to the motivation to help educate the students."State Rep. Toby Overdorf, R-Palm City, whose district covers Martin and St. Lucie counties, was one of several authors of the bill.He said the money is now in place for school districts to negotiate with teacher's unions."The reality is that this is laid out, not only as a benchmark, ,500, but also, it's great recognition and allowing those individual school districts to make a choice with their teachers as to what kind of raises they're going to be getting," said Overdorf.Overdorf said districts that already have a starting pay higher than ,500 will also likely see an increase and that the state of Florida is now in an excellent position to bring the best teachers back."Some of the best and brightest have gone to teach elsewhere because, frankly, they weren't able to get that living salary that recognizes the job that they do," said Overdorf. "Florida has now laid that down. Matt Bevin has opposed Kentucky teachers' rallies for pension protection and public education funding since they began, but never quite the way he did on Friday afternoon, when he told a gaggle of reporters that the strike would directly cause children to be injured, poisoned and sexually assaulted. "I guarantee you somewhere in Kentucky today a child was sexually assaulted that was left at home because there was nobody there to watch them," he said. "I guarantee you somewhere today, a child was physically harmed or ingested poison because they were home alone because a single parent didn't have enough money to take care of them."Bevin, who hours later would see his veto of an education-boosting?state budget overriden by state lawmakers, characterized the attitudes of striking teachers as cavalier and flippant about student safety. For the first time, accused Waffle House gunman Travis Reinking has broken his silence.Reinking has been accused of murdering four people and injuring four others in a mass shooting at the Antioch, Tennessee restaurant last month.  Four people – 29-year-old Taurean Sanderlin, of Goodlettsville; 20-year-old Joe Perez, of Nashville; 21-year-old DeEbony Groves, of Gallatin; and 23-year-old Akilah DaSilva, of Antioch – were killed. Reinking was arrested the next day after a massive manhunt, booked into the jail and then he decided he wanted to talk.  He's locked up and undergoing a mental evaluation. In an exclusive interview, Reinking breaks his silence about his case. He called reporter Nick Beres at Scripps station WTVF  from maximum security at the Davidson County Jail. Reinking said he wanted to talk about his case, his mental health and his lawyers.  "About what I'm thinking and what I, I'd like to say on my behalf and stuff like that," Reinking said. In the days after his arrest, Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall talked about Reinking's behavior and compared him to another accused mass shooter in the jail. That would be Emanuel Samson, who's charged with killing one person last year at the Burnette Chapel Church of Christ, also in Antioch. "I would use the word a little bit more normal for this one compared to the Emanuel [Samson] case, as it relates to interaction. That's probably the word that's been used the most," Hall said at the time.  Since Reinking's arrest, many have wondered if he will try using the insanity defense. When asked about his mental fitness he said, "Yeah, no… I'm perfectly healthy."  As for the shooting at the Waffle House? He wasn't ready to talk about that. "I'd rather not in the setting I'm at right now," Reinking said. But he did talk about his pending criminal case. Reinking has two appointed lawyers, but he said he plans to handle his own legal defense. "That's the thing, I'm choosing to represent myself. I don't know how that works. I didn't like those attorneys," Reinking said. He will likely address that at his next court appearance on June 1.
