With coronavirus cases ramping up in a number of US states, more and more US governors have issued mandates to wear masks while in public settings. The continued spike in COVID-19 cases has caused several states to close bars and pause plans to reopen some businesses such as movie theaters. While a number of states had previously mandated masks in many public spaces, several more have been added to the list in recent days. Requiring face coverings are largely being seen as a way to avoid reinstituting stay-at-home orders, which most states implemented during the spring.Researchers from the University of Washington say that a projected 33,000 American lives would be saved between June 23 and October 1 if 95% of the population wore masks in public settings.A study in the Lancet found that the use of masks and respirators by those infected with the virus reduced the risk of spreading the infection by 85%. The authors analyzed data that showed that N95 respirators in healthcare settings were up to 96% effective. Other masks were found to be 77% effective. The following states generally require face coverings to be worn in public:Alabama - July 16Arkansas - July 16California – June 18Colorado - July 17Connecticut – April 20Delaware – May 1District of Columbia – May 16Hawaii - April 17Illinois – April 30Indiana - July 27Kansas - July 3Kentucky - July 10Louisiana - July 13Maine – April 29Maryland – April 18Massachusetts – May 6Michigan - April 24Minnesota - July 25Montana - July 16Nevada – June 24New Jersey - April 10New Mexico – May 15New York – April 15North Carolina – June 26Ohio - July 23Oregon - July 1Pennsylvania – April 18Puerto Rico Rhode Island – May 8Texas - July 2Vermont - August 1Virginia - June 8Washington - June 26West Virginia - July 7Some states, like Ohio and Texas, require mask wearing only in counties where there are high coronavirus case rates. More than a dozen other states have issued recommendations for wearing masks. Some of those states require employees in certain fields to wear a mask while at work. 2059

While Tuesday's election wasn't quite the "Blue Wave" that Democrats had hoped for, the Democratic Party won a majority of seats in the U.S. House once the new Congress is seated in January. Democrats needed to turn over at least 23 Republican seats for a total of 218 and the party claimed 222 on Tuesday night, according to numbers from CNN.Although Democrats will lose seats in the Senate, taking the House gives Democrats the ability to conduct investigations, which could pose issues for President Donald Trump pending the result of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation. Ushering in a crop of new Democrats into the House, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 29, will become the youngest woman in history to be elected to Congress. She upset New York Democratic Rep. Joe Crowley in the primary election earlier this year. Michigan Democrat Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar, the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party's nominee, were elected on Tuesday as the first Muslim women in the House. Former Tennessee Titans linebacker Colin Allred, a Democrat in Dallas, defeated incumbent Pete Sessions to win his first time as a candidate.  1184

WILMINGTON, Del. – In a prime-time speech after the Electoral College vote, President-elect Joe Biden is set to declare that “not even ... an abuse of power” can stop a peaceful transition of power in the U.S. after last month’s election. That’s an overt swipe at President Donald Trump’s refusal to accept defeat and the top Republicans who have continued to stand by him.Biden is set to speak in Wilmington at about 7:30 p.m. ET Monday after the Electoral College formally votes to declare him president.According to excerpts released ahead of time by his campaign, Biden plans to call for unity and again express his intentions to be a president for everyone, regardless of whether they voted for him.“As I said through this campaign, I will be a president for all Americans,” Biden will say. “I will work just as hard for those of you who didn’t vote for me, as I will for those who did.But he also will say that “In America, politicians don’t take power — the people grant it to them.”“The flame of democracy was lit in this nation a long time ago,” Biden is set to say. “And we now know that nothing — not even a pandemic —or an abuse of power — can extinguish that flame.”As electors gathered in all 50 states and the District of Columbia on Monday to formally vote for the next president, the U.S. reached two major milestones in the COVID-19 pandemic. The nation’s death toll from the coronavirus surpassed 300,000 people and the first doses of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine were administered to health care workers in several states.During his remarks, Biden is also expected to touch on the state of the pandemic and what he’ll do to help get the country through it.“There is urgent work in front of all of us. Getting the pandemic under control to getting the nation vaccinated against this virus. Delivering immediate economic help so badly needed by so many Americans who are hurting today — and then building our economy back better than ever,” Biden is set to say. 1983

While hundreds of families wait in agony to learn the fate of missing loved ones, officials gave a gut-wrenching forecast on the fate of California's Camp Fire:It's not even halfway done burning yet.Since the Camp Fire erupted 10 days ago in Butte County, it has killed 77 people, destroyed more than 9,700 homes and torched an area the size of Chicago. But the blaze probably won't be fully contained until November 30, according to Cal Fire, the state's forestry and fire protection agency."It is overwhelming, I don't have any word to describe it," Butte County Sheriff and Coroner Kory Honea said. "This is unprecedented. No one has had to deal with this magnitude that caused so much destruction and regrettably so much death."Meanwhile, displaced residents are in limbo. Many are in Chico, Butte County's most populous city, about 15 miles from ground zero of the disaster, the town of Paradise. Some evacuees are staying with friends and family. Others are in a tent city in a Walmart parking lot. On Sunday, those seeking a place to grieve trickled into the First Christian Church of Chico for a candlelight vigil.A sign in the church set an intention for the hourslong open memorial: "We will rise from the ashes."The Camp Fire is already the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California history. And with 993 people still unaccounted for, officials fear the death toll could keep rising.Crews are combing the remnants of houses where all evidence of life has been wiped out by flames. Many of the searchers have lost their own homes and are looking for the remains of their neighbors. While the search for the dead and missing continues, thousands of firefighters are trying to control the blaze. As of late Sunday, the Camp Fire had seared 150,000 acres and was 65% contained. 1826

WINDSOR, Ontario — Caesars Windsor Hotel and Casino is temporarily closed due to a labor dispute with a local union.According to the company's website, the closure is the result of a labor disruption. A message on the site says, "At this time, hotel reservations booked between Friday, April 6 until Thursday, April 12 have been canceled."The Unifor Local 444 Facebook page says there was a tentative deal in place as of April 3 but that fell through. On Thursday night, only 41 percent of union members voted in favor of the new deal, which caused the strike. The 444 handles everything from janitors and food/waitstaff to hotel clerks. The casino says that Friday’s Johnny Reid concert has been postponed. Ticketholders can use their tickets when the show is rescheduled, or get a refund. However, tickets purchased at the Caesars box office will not be refunded until it reopens following the labor dispute. Right now, the casino says all other shows are scheduled until further notice. It's not clear how long the employee strike will last. The last strike at the casino happened in April of 2004 and lasted about 40 days. The casino released this statement: 1166
