WASHINGTON (AP) — A record number of women were elected to the House on Tuesday, nearly two years after women spilled out into the streets of Washington and in cities across the country in defiance of the inauguration of President Donald Trump. The incoming class of lawmakers could have a stark impact on politics in the nation's capital, particularly within the Democratic Party, after a midterm election that was widely seen as a referendum on Trump's first term.As of early Wednesday, voters were on track to send at least 99 women to the House, surpassing the previous record of 84. According to data compiled by The Associated Press, 237 women ran for the House as major-party candidates this year.Among the new lawmakers headed to the House is Jennifer Wexton, a Virginia state senator who defeated incumbent Barbara Comstock in one of the most closely watched races across the country. And Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the former Bernie Sanders organizer who won an upset primary victory over a senior House Democrat, will also head to Congress.RELATED CONTENT 1072

WASHINGTON (AP) — A Justice Department investigation finds that Yale University is illegally discriminating against Asian American and white applicants, in violation of federal civil rights law. Yale denies the allegation, calling it “meritless” and “hasty.” The findings were detailed in a letter to the college’s attorneys Thursday. The letter was obtained by the Associated Press. It marks the latest action by the Trump administration aimed at rooting out discrimination in the college application process. The Justice Department says the two-year investigation concluded that Yale “rejects scores of Asian American and white applicants each year based on their race, whom it otherwise would admit.” 711

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — Two brothers are behind bars after deputies say they got into a road rage incident and robbed a driver in Vista. On Tuesday, just before 9:30 a.m. near the 1300 block of Melrose Way, San Diego Sheriff's Department says Matthew, 29, and John, 23, Giordano were driving in a lifted grey Silverado pick-up truck. Deputies say for some reason, Matthew became angry and began to follow another vehicle and displayed a weapon to the driver. At one point, the truck cut off the driver and came to a stop, deputies say.Deputies said Matthew got out of his truck and started punching the driver's side window. Once the driver opened the door, Matthew took about ,000 worth of jewelry and money from the driver, deputies added.During the confrontation, John used a metal tool to smash the driver's windshield and the windshield of a second car not involved in the original incident, deputies say. The brothers then drove off.One of the victims suffered minor injuries from broken glass. Damage to both cars was estimated between ,000 and ,000.SDSO investigators say they gathered enough evidence to serve a search warrant in the 1500 block of Sapphire Lane, where the Giordanos were arrested on several charges, including conspiracy and robbery. 1271

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A Navy veteran accused of torturing and disfiguring his neighbors’ dogs decided Tuesday to represent himself in court. The accused attacker, David Herbert, told the jury room repeatedly that he didn’t do it, adding that authorities have the wrong man.Prosecutors in the case say the evidence and video show there’s no mistake. Herbert is accused of such torture as gouging out a Husky’s eye and pouring acid on another. Prosecutors say they have several smoking guns, including a bloody bat and saliva samples with DNA from the dogs taken from Herbert’s car and home. The most compelling evidence in the case is surveillance video of a missing dog Herbert is seen driving away with. The dog was never seen again.Other neighbors further detailed the alleged abuse inflicted on the two Huskies. One of the dogs was dumped at Camp Pendleton and, when that failed, Herbert reportedly broke into their home, gouging out one of the dog’s eye and forcing another to ingest antifreeze. Both families said they moved, terrified Herbert would hurt their children. Herbert faces up to 16 years in prison if convicted. 1150
