Former US President Jimmy Carter was hospitalized on Monday following a fall at his home in Georgia, according to a statement by the Carter Center. Carter, 94, had surgery to repair a broken hip as a result from the fall. He is said to be recovering, the statement read. Carter was leaving to go turkey hunting on Monday when the fall happened. Despite his advanced age, Carter has maintained an active schedule. He continues to hold Sunday School in Georgia, and visits Habitat for Humanity projects across the country. Carter has had some health issues in recent years. In 2015, he had a "small mass" removed from his liver. During his treatment for the liver, he was diagnosed with melanoma on his brain, and would undergo treatment. Just four months later, Carter declared that he was cancer free.In 2017 while at a Habitat for Humanity project in Canada, Carter was hospitalized for dehydrated while working under the hot sun. Carter was released the next day. Carter is the oldest living former president. 1024

Having children will make you happier than staying childless, according to a new study, but not until later in life, when they have flown the nest.A team of researchers at Heidelberg University in Germany found that parents tend to be happier than non-parents in old age, but this only holds if their kids have moved out.Previous research has suggested that parenthood, social networks and marital status affect the well-being and mental health of older people, and this latest study looks at the effects of family status.Scientists asked 55,000 people age 50 and over from 16 European countries about their mental well-being, and results suggest "the positive aspects of parenthood dominate when getting older."One of the biggest factors is that children become a form of social support, and the researchers point out that social support networks are associated with greater happiness and less loneliness and can act as a buffer against stressful events."The results suggest that the finding of a negative link between children and well-being and mental health may not generalize to older people whose children have often left home already," the study says."As stress associated with balancing the competing demands of childcare, work and personal life decreases, once people get older and their children leave (home), the importance of children as caregivers and social contacts might prevail."However, children who still live at home are shown to have a negative effect on well-being.Christoph Becker, who formed part of the research team, told CNN that having a social network corresponds to greater life satisfaction, but that doesn't have to come from children.Older people without children could get similar benefits from other close social connections with whom they can share issues and problems, he added.Becker told CNN there are plans to track happiness for the same people over multiple years to study how well being evolves as people get older."Literature has suggested that there might be U-shaped connection between age and happiness: people become less happy in middle age, but more happy in older age," said Becker."We want to test if we find a similar relationship in our data, depending again on parenthood and social networks."Previous research on the subject has been mixed.A report by Princeton University and Stony Brook University published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found "very little difference" between the life satisfaction of parents and people without children, once other factors -- such as income, education, religion and health -- were factored out, said Arthur Stone, one of the study's co-authors.Another study, by the Open University in England, found childless couples were happier with their relationships and their partners than parents were, and were doing more work on their relationships than parenting couples. 2895

House Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows, one of President Donald Trump's closest allies, on Wednesday described Trump's resolve to hold out for billion in border wall funding as "very firm" as the partial government shutdown entered its fifth day.Having spoken to the President since Saturday, the North Carolina Republican described Democrats as "misreading" Trump if they thought he would compromise on funding for the wall."I can tell you, if they believe this President is going to yield on this particular issue, they're misreading him, misreading the American people," Meadows told CNN's Manu Raju on "Inside Politics."Trump, speaking to reporters hours later during a trip to Iraq to visit US troops, indicated his position had not changed.Asked how long the shutdown would last, the President responded that it would go on for "whatever it takes" for him to get wall funding. "We need a wall," Trump said. "So when you say how long is it going to take? When are they going to say that we need border security?"Negotiations between congressional Democrats and the Trump administration over the President's demands for a border wall have so far not yielded an agreement, and the shutdown will continue until at least Thursday, when the Senate returns to Washington.Trump is demanding that the bill funding the Department of Homeland Security include billion for the border wall. The House passed a bill that included the funding and declined to take up a Senate-passed plan that would have kept the government open through February 8. The Senate declined to take up the House's bill before the shutdown. Democrats are refusing to include that much funding for the wall in the bill. Both sides seem entrenched in their opposing stances and it's possible parts of the government could remain closed until the new Congress is seated in the first week of January, when Democrats will take control of the House.Further illustrating how far apart Democrats and the President are from each other, Meadows said, "I see no evidence that would suggest he would come even close to 1.3" billion dollars in spending for the wall. Meadows added, "I don't see that as a reasonable counteroffer."Behind the scenes, Meadows said, Trump "was fully engaged up through the Christmas break getting on the phones with different senators and members of Congress trying to find some kind of path forward."In his own conversations with his Democratic colleagues, Meadows said, "Most of what we've faced is really a wall of sorts with the Democrats."The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company.
