CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- With cases of coronavirus continuing to spike in the United States, Southwestern College announced Tuesday that the campus will be conducting courses online for about a week as a precautionary measure.Students and campus staff are moving all in-person classes to online or distributed instruction from March 16 through the 20.The decision joins numerous other institutions throughout the country to help suppress the spread of the virus.List: Major universities suspending in-person classes amid coronavirus fears"This is a rapidly changing situation and we appreciate everyone’s patience as college leadership works to ensure a safe and healthy learning environment for our students, employees and community," said SWC President Kindred Murillo said.They are also canceling "large public events at all our campuses." The college has satellite campuses in Chula Vista, National City, San Ysidro, Otay Mesa, and Coronado. This is due to health officials recommending that the public avoid close social contact as they try to get a handle on the virus spreading nationally.On Monday, San Diego health officials confirmed that a female resident in her 50s tested positive for the virus after traveling overseas. Chick-Fil-A is testing a new menu item in Arizona, and depending on how it goes, it could be rolled out to menus nationwide.Starting Monday, spicy chicken strips will be available at Chick-Fil-A restaurants in Phoenix, Tucson and Yuma, the fast-food chain said.They've been under test in Philadelphia and Texas since last year.The strips come in orders of three or four, and a choice of dipping sauce.The company said it combined their original chicken strips and spicy chicken strip sandwich to create the new menu item.The strips are seasoned with a spicy blend of peppers, hand-breaded, and cooked in refined peanut oil. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — As schools try to navigate the future of in-person education in the era of coronavirus, Southwestern College is already returning some students to campus. The Southwestern College Higher Education Center in Otay Mesa welcomed nursing and health occupational students, along with students in the public safety program, back to campus June 1. These students are training to fill jobs like nurses, EMTs, paramedics, and more.Dean Sylvia Cornejo said since March, they have been using technology for remote learning, but the school has been planning on bringing these students back as quickly as possible because of their careers and the need for essential workers right now.RELATED: San Diego Office of Education releases guidance to reopen schools“The students got as far as they could with online instruction but really we needed to be able to bring them back to campus for all of their practical labs,” she said.She said this location has returned to campus because of the nature of the students, but most of the five Southwestern College locations will remain remote for the fall term. (CNS) - The body of a woman who apparently had been shot to death was found Wednesday in a patch of shrubbery near the Otay River.A passer-by made the discovery in a field behind a Smart & Final store in the 3100 block of Main Street in Chula Vista about 6:30 a.m., according to police.Preliminary evidence at the scene -- notably, spent shell casings -- indicated that the woman, whose identity was not immediately available but police described her as a Hispanic woman in her 20's, was slain, Lt. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - While the current focus is on coronavirus, doctors are warning to not forget about other killers that are always present.Dr. Marilyn Norton is the Chief of Staff at Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center and said they’ve seen drastic drops in the number of people coming in to get cancer screenings. She said the three most common cancer screenings are mammograms for breast cancer, Pap smears for cervical cancer and colonoscopies for colon cancer.Sharp Chula Vista saw an 87% decrease in mammograms in April and May of 2020 compared to the same time frame last year. The hospital did pause screenings at the beginning of the closure, but has been doing screenings again since May.Dr. Norton said these screenings can be some of the best life-saving measures.“We know that if patients get found at early stages, the chances of them dying from that cancer is much less,” she said.She said some of the reasons people still are not coming in to get screened could be because people don’t know screenings have resumed, or because people are worried about going to a hospital right now, but she said the difference between now and the beginning of the pandemic is that there is more knowledge of how to stop the spread of coronavirus now, so the hospital is taking preventative steps to keep patients coming in for screenings healthy.“Although there’s a lot of fear regarding the pandemic, we also have to realize that screening is very important to be able to try to catch that cancer at an early stage,” she said.She said she anticipates the lull in screening now to impact cancer rates in the next five to ten years because of cancer that could have been caught at an earlier stage, and she hopes people realize the importance of early screening now to stop that eventual increase.“Don’t ignore the screenings that need to be done in order for you not to have to die from cancer,” said Dr. Norton. 1927
