BEIJING, Apirl 1 (Xinhuanet) -- An Ariane rocket launch of two communications satellites was aborted Wednesday after a technical hitch at the scheduled moment of liftoff in French Guiana on Wednesday.According to Arianespace, the Ariane 5 rocket's Vulcain main engine ignited as scheduled at 5:45 pm EDT (21:45 GMT), but the checkout process during ignition detected an unspecified anomaly, shutting down the engine before the two solid-rocket boosters ignited.The 165-foot (50-meter) tall Ariane 5 rocket's main engine's checkout process "was not completed successfully, preventing the boosters' ignition and thereby aborting the mission," Arianespace officials said. "The Ariane 5 and its two payloads remain in a safe mode on the launch pad."The Ariane 5 rocket uses a Vulcain 2 first stage engine assisted by two solid rocket boosters to launch satellite payloads into orbit. The Vulcain 2 engine is fueled by cryogenic liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen and is designed to burn for about 600 seconds to boost payloads into space.Jean-Yves Le Gall, Arianespace president, said it would return the rocket to the final assembly building to prepare it for another launch attempt while investigating the cause of the problem. No new launch date was immediately announced.The Ariane 5 was to launch the Yahsat Y1A and Intelsat New Dawn communications satellites.

BEIJING, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- A recent circular of China's film and television watchdog to cut smoking scenes in films and TV dramas has received welcome from supporters of tobacco control.Xu Guihua, deputy head of China Association on Tobacco Control (CATC), a non-profit organization, said the order of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) demonstrates government determination to protect public health rights."Frequent smoking scenes in films and TV dramas do not accord with China's stance on tobacco control and mislead the public, especially the youth," said the SARFT in a recent circular.Tobacco brands or signs and smoking scenes with juveniles present should not be allowed to appear in films or TV dramas, it said, adding that scenes which have to show smoking should "last as short as possible."Hailing the order, Xu said the communication through media including movies and TV is among those factors that can influence people's attitude toward smoking.Deng Haihua, a spokesman with China's Ministry of Health, also said the SARFT's move will help prevent people, especially the young, from being misled by smoking scenes on screens.In a survey report issued in August 2010, the CATC said it found smoking scenes in 31 movies and 28 TV series after monitoring 40 Chinese movies and 30 local TV series.Another survey by Beijing Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention also showed students tend to follow the fashion after seeing actors smoke on TV or in films.China has more than 300 million smokers and 540 million more suffering from secondhand smoke.What is especially worrisome is that 11.5 percent of the country's juvenile smoke and the ratio is even increasing, according to experts.

CHIAYI, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chen Yunlin, the Chinese mainland chief negotiator with Taiwan, discussed cooperation prospects on Friday with fishermen and farmers in Chiayi in southern Taiwan.Chen, president of the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS), led a 50-member delegation and spoke at a seminar attended by more than 70 business people from both the mainland and Taiwan.He said small and medium-sized enterprises on both sides "played an important role in cross-Strait economic development, employment and in maintaining social stability.""Small- and medium-sized businesses are an important part of cross-Strait economic exchanges," he said, adding that among the more than 80,000 Taiwanese enterprises investing on the mainland, over 50 percent are small and medium-sized companies.Chen said that efforts should be made to enhance cooperation between small and medium-sized enterprises on the mainland and those in central and southern Taiwan.The mainland delegation arrived in Chiayi from Kaohsiung after investigating the investment environment with local business leaders. SAN FRANCISCO, April 28 (Xinhua) -- Cisco Systems Inc., world's largest maker of computer-networking equipment, on Thursday brought up an early retirement offer to its employees in the United States and Canada, in a move to cut costs and restructure the company.The voluntary plan applies to employees who are at least 50 years old and have a combined age and years of service at Cisco for at least 60 as of July 8, the company said in a memo sent to employees."Cisco employs a variety of different methods to control costs and align investment dollars, and offering this voluntary early retirement program to those eligible employees in the U.S. and Canada is part of our ongoing commitment to responsible business management," the company said in a statement.Cisco gave no details on the costs it would save and the number of employees eligible for the plan.Earlier this month, Cisco CEO John Chambers warned that "tough decisions" would be made to preserve profitability as government budget pressure has been costing the company orders and slowing its sales growth.On April 12, Cisco announced to shut down its Flip Video camcorder business to restructure its business and support its key priorities.

Google chairman Eric Schmidt has promised that the firm will simplify the process by which Android phone users agree to share their data.It follows questions in the US Senate about how much location information is stored by mobile handsets.Speaking in the UK at a conference on privacy, he also revealed that Google plans to offer web users more control over their online profile.Mr Schmidt insisted that the company took the matter "very seriously".He told attendees at the Big Tent debate in Hertfordshire that his firm was working on "a series of projects" aimed at increasing transparency.Those include a revised Google Dashboard, where users can see what data they have shared with the search giant."It is worth stressing that we can only do this with data you have shared with Google. We can't be a vacuum-cleaner for the whole internet," he said.Mr Schmidt stressed that Google was on the side of consumers when it came to privacy. "In general we take the position that you own your data and should be able to opt in or out of a service," he said.But he added that if users gave consent for sharing data, it would help Google improve its services."If you choose to give us that information we can do a better job.
