SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego couple is doing all they can to bring joy to hundreds of kids living in orphanages and shelters around the county.And despite the pandemic, they have donated thousands of stuffed animals to little ones in need.Charles and Linda van Kessler, with Passion 4 Kids, have donated 5,000 stuffed animals this year to kids in orphanages and shelters around the county."They need so much more and deserve so much better," Linda van Kessler said. "For these kids, it means a lot. It's something that's theirs. Something that gives them unconditional love."More than half of Passion 4 Kids' donations have been delivered in the past month. The couple says the kids cling to their new toys like a security blanket, of sorts."They are just so craving for love and someone to care about them and play with them. Most of the time we end up in tears because it's just so heartbreaking," Linda said.Charles says he knows the power of giving comfort first hand. He spent nearly 10 years in an orphanage in Amsterdam during World War II."I saw my family snatched away for the nazis. So I ended up in a state orphanage for 8 years, of abuse. I ran away and when I came to America I immediately decided to create a charity," Charles van Kessler said.And the pandemic has taken a toll on children. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A growing number of apps and online video games are creating new opportunities for hate groups to recruit young people with little oversight, experts say.The information comes about a month after a 19-year-old honors student allegedly shot four people inside a Poway synagogue, killing one person.Dr. Peter Simi, a Chapman University professor who has studied hate groups for more than 20 years, say they are feeling emboldened in a way not seen before. Simi pointed to the charged anti-immigration and anti-Muslim rhetoric that has become mainstream has given the groups new confidence. "We have a long history of these groups that we don't talk nearly enough about because we're in kind of the denial game," Simi said. "The last several years, the white supremacist movement is emboldened in a way that certainly goes beyond anything I've seen in 24 years."RELATED: Shooting at Poway synagogue leaves one dead, three injuredSimi said the groups will use a soft-sell method, drawing people in with subtle white supremacist ideas. They use that introduction as an avenue for further discussion before growing more explicit. The groups, which have posted fliers on San Diego college campuses, are also recruiting young people through apps and video games.For instance, a suspected hate group targeted Ben Hedgspeth's 17-year-old son through a meme app."They were coming from a particular religious background and they were trying to recruit him into their online chat space," he said. "It frustrates me to know that those people are out there approaching our children."Simi said ignoring the groups won't work and schools aren't always doing enough. To start, subscription programs like Circle and Bark can do things like filter content and set limits. Bark will also alert parents to communication such as hate speech, sex acts and depression. But there's one place safeguards still lag: Video games. Bark Chief Parenting Officer Titania Jordan said it's because people communicate verbally - via headset - on popular online games like Fortnite, Roadblocks and Minecraft. She said children need to be instructed never to divulge any personally identifying information that can make them easy to locate, and then lured into a private chat. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego County public defense attorney is accused of providing a felon with a firearm, according to local law enforcement.  San Diego Police confirm that Andrea Bayer was arrested on August 1 and booked into Las Colinas women’s jail on charges related to selling, supplying or delivering a firearm to either a convicted felon or someone wanted on a felony warrant. She was released the same day on bond.  On the State Bar of California’s website, it shows that the 37 year-old’s license is still active and that she works as an Alternate Public Defender for San Diego County. The District Attorney’s Office says Bayer has not been charged and the case remains under review. A Group Communications Officer with San Diego County sent us the following statement: “The County of San Diego cannot comment on personnel matters. Ms. Bayer is currently on leave from her position pending the outcome of the investigation. The Public Defender believes in the presumption of innocence and has faith in the judicial process.” 1070

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new plan is calling for more than 170,000 new homes across the San Diego region over the next decade.The San Diego Association of Governments says the region needs 171,685 housing units by 2029 to meet demand. On Friday, its board approved a plan that divvied up those units across the region's 18 cities and unincorporated county based on a formula of job growth and access to transit. "We are in the midst of a housing crisis. It's time to act. Doing things the same way is not going to give us a different result," said San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer. The debate at the SANDAG meeting lasted about four hours, with some of the county's smaller cities saying the plan gave them an undue burden they could not meet. "It is impossible," said National City councilman Ron Morrison, who is not on the board. "Our urban reserve is the weeds behind the backstop in the little field. There is no place to build."National City's mayor Alejandra Sotello-Solis supported the proposal. Most of the homes, 107,901, will go in the City of San Diego. Chula Vista will be responsible for 11,105; Imperial Beach will add 1,375; Coronado 1,001, and Del Mar 163. Del Mar Deputy Mayor Ellie Haviland voted in favor of the plan, though she said she didn't know where those 163 homes could go. "If we are pushing housing away from transit and away from jobs, then that is not going to work with the regional transportation plan we are trying to build," she said. Del Mar Councilwoman Terry Gaasterland, who opposes the plan but did not have a vote, noted Del Mar added 20 housing units in the past 10 years. The board initially voted down the proposal, but Faulconer then called for a weighted vote based on population - getting the necessary votes to pass.Coronado, Lemon Grove, Imperial Beach, Poway, Escondido, Santee, Solana Beach, Vista, El Cajon. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A local hardware store is hoping to find the family of a mysterious model the store used for an ad when it first opened its doors in the late 1800s.The woman, known as the “Hardware Lady,” modeled hardware items on her dress for one of San Diego Hardware’s first advertisements 125 years ago.The company is hoping to identify the mystery model in time for their December 8 anniversary party. The store also hopes to honor the model and her family.The model’s dress was styled with keys, locks and chains and a small wood burning stove. The woman’s crown was made of spoons, clothespins and other hardware from the store.The store was founded in 1892 and now operates in Kearny Mesa and online. 721
