A Mesa woman is taking action for her kids after claiming to notice an influx of scorpions at her apartment complex. Kayla Balodis, her fiancé, and two young children moved into an apartment complex at the Lakeview at Superstition Springs in Mesa six months ago.    During the walk-through, she says she found scorpions in the apartment, but the management told her it was likely just because the unit had been vacant for so long. When the family moved in; however, Balodis says they kept coming across more and more scorpions.   "It's like a nightmare; we're living in a nightmare. This place is basically infested. It's not just one or two. They're everywhere," said Balodis. She says she took her complaints to the front office, but didn't have much success."They kinda act like it's no big deal," she said.  The scorpions went away for the winter but have started to return now that the temperature is heating back up. So to prove her point, Saturday night Balodis and her fiancé went out with a blacklight and fishbowl to capture as many as they could.Balodis said they found them along the walls, on the roof, on the base of trees, and crawling up palm trees. She says within 20 minutes they had caught about 40 scorpions. Scripps station KNXV in Phoenix reached out to the front office and was told because of the holiday management couldn't answer any questions until Monday, but assured reporters that they handle each concern promptly.  Within an hour of the call, Balodis says she got an email from the front office telling her they'll reach out to pest control again and the situation will be taken care of.  But Balodis says the only thing she wants is to get out for the safety of her kids."I can't live like this; I'm afraid of the summer because we moved in September and we had an issue. I don't want to see what the summer is gonna look like," said Balodis. On Monday, KNXV returned to Balodis's apartment with a pest control expert for tips on how to insect-proof an apartment. Ryan Michel, with Defense Pest Control, says scorpions can fit through cracks the width of a credit card. "Your first line of defense is to make sure all windows and doors are sealed well. If you can see light through a crack, a scorpion can most likely get in through there," said Michel. Michel says the best thing to do to prevent scorpions are glue boards or “sticky boards” and to place them near entryways and near cracks where scorpions can enter.  2590

A new report from the CDC and Rhode Island shows COVID-19 rates below one percent in childcare facilities with young children this summer. They also found a low rate of secondary transmission among these facilities, with 15 percent of coronavirus cases resulting in transmission to at least one other person.“The critical thing here is to build the confidence of teachers, the confidence of parents,” said Dr. Robert Redfield, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “This study provides data, that when things are done with vigilance in partnership with the public health community, you can, in fact, in a complex situation like child care ... you can reopen child care" and have low rates of secondary transmission. The study tracked coronavirus cases at childcare facilities in Rhode Island this summer. On June 1, the state was seeing a decline in coronavirus cases and hospitalizations, and allowed childcare programs to re-open after a 3-month closure.In order to reopen, the facility had to submit a plan to the state for approval that included reduced enrollment, a cohort of no more than 20 people including kids and staff, universal use of masks for adults, and daily symptom screening of adults and kids.Roughly 75 percent of licensed center and home-based childcare facilities were approved to reopen, caring for 18,945 children.Between June 1 and July 31, there were 101 possible child care-associated COVID-19 cases identified at the facility level; among those, 49 were excluded because they had a negative COVID-19 test.Of the remaining 52 confirmed and probable cases, 30 were children; that is roughly .16 percent of the 18,945 children in childcare in Rhode Island this summer. There were 20 teachers and 2 parents who are among the confirmed or probable cases.Cases were confirmed an average of two days after specimen collection.Contact tracing led to the quarantine of 687 children and 166 staff members; that’s roughly 3.6 percent of the total children in Rhode Island care facilities this summer being impacted by quarantine efforts.The cases happened at 29 of the 666 childcare facilities, in 20 of the facilities, there was a single coronavirus case and no transmission. Five of the 29 programs, 15 percent, had two to five cases.The remaining four coronavirus cases may or may not have had secondary transmission. Health officials state those facilities were breaking protocol by moving members of a cohort around to other classrooms, delayed reporting of symptoms, etc. that made it difficult to track.The CDC warns these results were only possible because of decreasing COVID-19 rates in the state, and the community effort to slow the spread of coronavirus. This includes wearing masks and practicing social distancing when around other people.“I understand masks can be uncomfortable to wear and hard to remember to bring when you go out,” Dr. Redfield said. “Schools are not islands in and of themselves, they are connected to the communities around them.”The study says maintaining stable staffing was one of the most difficult things; needing to cover teacher breaks, vacations, etc. while still maintaining the smaller cohort sizes.They recommend additional funding to continue with the smaller class sizes. 3271

A new species of prehistoric reptile has apparently been discovered within the depths of the Petrified Forest National Park in northeastern Arizona.Named Skybalonyx skapter, the fossilized remains are believed to be a new species of drepanosaur, a reported 220-million-year-old burrowing reptile that potentially looked like a combination of an anteater and chameleon, the Petrified Forest National Park said Tuesday in a news release.Skybalonyx skapter, though, may have looked even more peculiar, the release said.Drepanosaurs have been noted to have interesting features, such as "enlarged second claws, bird-like beaks, and tails ending with a claw," the release said.The discovery was made by research teams from Petrified Forest National Park, Virginia Tech, University of Washington, Arizona State University, Idaho State University, and the Virginia Museum of Natural History, according to the release.Their findings were reportedly published on Oct. 8 in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology. The study compared the claws of drepanosaurs to Skybalonyx skapter to modern animals, and reportedly found that Skybaonyx skapter's claws were similar to moles, echidnas, and mole-rats.Adam Marsh, the lead paleontologist at the Petrified Forest, said in an email that the bones were discovered during the summers of 2018 and 2019 as part of a paleontological dig.Due to their small size, the remains were reportedly difficult to find using traditional methods. Essentially, research teams used a series of metal screens and water to sift and break down rocks to find the fossils.He said the bones were found in the eastern expansion of the forest that was acquired in 2011. In a ruling Thursday, Judge Peter Kelly said the Surrogates Court lacked jurisdiction in the case. Mary Trump is the daughter of Fred Trump Jr., the president’s elder brother, who died in 1981. A passenger on board an American Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Nashville is being evaluated after reporting a serious illness.  Details were limited at this time.
