CAIRO, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- The first training session for Egyptian Chinese language teachers to improve their teaching ability started on Sunday in Cairo.The session, under the supervision of the Chinese Confucius institute, will concentrate on the exchange of experiences in teaching the Chinese language in Egypt and the enhancement of Egyptian teachers' ability to make better use of the textbooks.The three-day training session will contain language and cultural courses by professors and instructors from famous Chinese universities such as Beijing University and Beijing Foreign Studies University, said Li Shengjun, head of the Confucius Institute at Cairo University.Nearly 60 Egyptian Chinese language teachers, including 14 professors, from universities including Cairo University, Ain Shams University and Minya University will attend the training courses.China has established 691 Confucius institutes and classes in around 69 countries until 2010, including nine in the Arab countries.

BEIJING, Feb.14 (Xinhua) - Shanghai General Motors Co. will recall 2,806 imported Cadillac CTS vehicles in China to repair faulty track bars to prevent safety risks, China's quality watchdog said on Monday.The recall, which is set to begin on March 21, includes models that were produced between June 16, 2008 and April 20, 2009, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said in a statement on its website.The statement said that the company would repair or replace the rear suspension track bars of the recalled vehicles because some nuts on the bars are likely to loosen and cause worn screw threads.This could lead to a loosened track bar under extreme conditions, which is unsafe when traveling fast, it said.The company is to contact car owners to provide free checks and repairs. KUNMING, March 13 (Xinhua) -- Local authorities said all earthquake victims had found shelter after nearly 9,000 tents were set up in the earthquake-hit Yingjiang County in southwest China.Altogether 53,000 people are being housed in large-sized tents erected in county plazas and village squares, said Jiang Zhaogang, spokesman with the rescue headquarters.Others moved in with friends, relatives, or makeshift houses for temporary accommodation, said Jiang.A 5.8-magnitude quake struck Yingjiang County in southwest China's Yunnan Province Thursday, leaving 25 dead and 314 injured. CHENGDU, May 8 (Xinhua) -- As a brand-name herbal capsule for cardiovascular disease in China, Di'ao Xinxuekang only needs to wait for another 15 years before reaching the EU market."The Dutch medical supervisors have recognized it as a qualified drug, but we still lack the evidence of 15-year presence in the EU market," said Ji Jianxin, a research manager with the drug's developer Di'ao Group based in southwest China's Sichuan Province.Di'ao, one of the largest Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) manufacturers, has been quite depressed, as many other TCM enterprises in China, by a European Union directive on traditional herbal medicinal products fully implemented from the beginning of this month.The directive requires that all herbal medicinal products, must obtain a medical license from any EU member state before it can be allowed in the EU market.It introduced a so-called simplified registration procedure with a seven-year transition period for traditional herbal medicinal products to be licensed, including Chinese and Indian ones.However, not a single Chinese herbal medicinal product has been granted the license so far, mainly due to the prohibitive registration cost and lack of required evidence to prove the product had a 30-year history of safe use, including 15 years in the EU.With a history of more than 2,000 years, TCM did not enter into the EU market until mid-1990s, and it has been imported into the EU and sold to European customers as food supplements instead of drugs.Most Chinese producers and importers did not reserve the customs papers a decade ago, thus unable to prove the 15-year use of their products in European markets.While TCM's globalization won't be doomed by one single EU directive as TCM export value to EU only takes up 14 percent of the total in 2010, experts and industry insiders still have had serious concerns about its future."Most TCM even don't have standardized labels that can help consumers to find out its origin," said Xian Sheng, from the China Association of TCM Export Companies.
