LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Denny's Inc. is being sued by a man who says he was eating at one of the dining chain's restaurants near downtown Los Angeles in 2018 when he was stabbed by a homeless man.Ralph Martinez maintains in his Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuit that Denny's management was aware of previous assaults at the location. He alleges negligence, premises liability, assault, battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress.A Denny's representative did not immediately reply to a request for comment on the complaint brought Friday. The plaintiff is seeking unspecified compensatory and punitive damages.According to his court papers, Martinez was having dinner alone at the Denny's in the 800 block of South Figueroa Street on June 24, 2018, when a homeless man entered the location and "immediately began making racial slurs at other customers and began harassing the other customers."The homeless man then approached Martinez and began hitting him before stabbing him several times with a knife, according to the lawsuit."At no point in time did defendant's staff intervene or even ask or escort the homeless man to leave," the suit says.Denny's did not have any security guards at the restaurant even though management knew of previous violent incidents there, the suit alleges. 1306

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Earthquake early warning alerts will become publicly available throughout California this week, the Governor's Office of Emergency Services said Wednesday.The system's statewide debut Thursday will coincide with the 30th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake that ravaged the San Francisco Bay area on Oct. 17, 1989, as well as the annual Great Shakeout safety drill.The warnings produced by the ShakeAlert system will be pushed through a smartphone app called MyShake and the same wireless notification system that issues Amber Alerts.The state earthquake app, developed at the University of California, Berkeley, is available for download to IOS users through iTunes and through GooglePlay stores for Android phones.The system does not predict earthquakes. Rather, it detects the start of an earthquake and calculates location, intensity and sends alerts to areas where shaking is likely to occur from quakes of magnitude 4.5 or greater.The alerts have been in development for years and last year were made broadly available to businesses, utilities, schools and other entities.Large-scale public notification has been available for Los Angeles County since the start of the year through an app developed for the city of Los Angeles, but it hasn't been triggered yet. 1300

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Southern California Edison said Tuesday its equipment likely sparked one of two ignition points for the massive wildfire that tore through California's central coast last year.Witnesses reported flames near the company's power poles in Ventura County last December and the utility "believes that its equipment was associated with this ignition," Edison said.Dozens of lawsuits allege Edison equipment caused the deadly Thomas Fire, but the statement marked the first time the company made such an acknowledgment.Edison hasn't determined if its equipment started the second ignition point nearly 6 miles (10 kilometers) away.Fire officials declined to comment on Edison's statement because no official cause of the fire has been determined. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Two Iranian men are facing federal charges for allegedly masterminding an international computer hacking scheme that used ransomware to extort about ,000 in Bitcoin from Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center and also targeted dozens of other victims, including the Port of San Diego, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Wednesday.Faramarz Shahi Savandi, 34, and Mohammad Mehdi Shah Mansouri, 27, were indicted by a federal grand jury in Newark, New Jersey, for the scheme that caused more than million in losses and allowed the alleged hackers to collect over million in ransom payments, according to the DOJ. The six-count indictment, unsealed Wednesday, alleges that Savandi and Mansouri, acting from inside Iran, authored malware capable of forcibly encrypting data on the computers of more than 200 victims, including Hollywood Presbyterian and the Port of San Diego. RELATED: Demand for Bitcoin included in Port of San Diego cyberattack ransom noteThe Port of San Diego revealed in September that it was working with federal law enforcement to find the culprit behind a cybersecurity attack that took place weeks earlier. The attack had temporary impacts on business services, park permits and public records requests, a port spokeswoman said. Ransomware was used in the attack and included a note requesting payment in Bitcoin. While some of the port's information technology systems were compromised, staff proactively shut down other systems to avoid further problems, the spokeswoman said. In February 2016, Hollywood Presbyterian announced it had paid a ransom of about ,000 in Bitcoin to restore its electronic medical record system after a cyber-attack that crippled its computer system but did not compromise patient care or patient and employee personal information. The attack prevented hospital staff from accessing selected computer systems and blocking electronic communications, medical center officials said. According to prosecutors, starting in December 2015, Savandi and Mansouri allegedly accessed victim computers through security vulnerabilities and installed the SamSam Ransomware. They then allegedly demanded ransom paid in the virtual currency Bitcoin in exchange for decryption keys for the encrypted data, collected payments and exchanged the Bitcoin into Iranian currancy using Iran-based Bitcoin exchangers. Assistant U.S. Attorney General Brian A. Benczkowski described the scheme as ``21st-century digital blackmail'' in which the defendants allegedly used ransomware to ``infect the computer networks of municipalities, hospitals, and other key public institutions, locking out the computer owners, and then demanded millions of dollars in payments from them.'' Savandi and Mansouri are charged with one count each of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit fraud and related activity in connection with computers, and two substantive counts each of intentional damage to a protected computer and transmitting a demand in relation to damaging a protected computer. The DOJ alleged that the men disguised the hacks to appear like legitimate network activity, launching attacks outside regular business hours, when victims would find it more difficult to fix the problem, and by encrypting backups of the victim computers. 3320
