OMAHA, Nebraska — Just before 5 p.m local time Monday, Omaha Police were called to the scene of a traffic incident involving a school bus near an intersection in North Omaha. Police later confirmed the boy, 8-year-old Haji Mohamed of Omaha, had died. According to a report from OPD received Monday night, "the investigation revealed that a Student Transportation of America school bus had come to a stop along Sprague Street just east of 22nd Street at a designated student drop off location."After several students disembarked the bus, the bus driver continued her route westbound on Sprague Street," the report states. "As the bus was traveling between 22nd Street and 23rd Street, an 8-year old male child who had just disembarked the bus, attempted to run across Sprague Street from north to south. As soon as the child entered the roadway, he was struck by the bus."The boy was transported by emergency personnel to Nebraska Medicine in extremely critical condition. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, the boy was pronounced dead, the OPD release states.  Early OPD reports indicated the elementary-aged boy was transported with "extremely critical injuries" to Nebraska Medicine, said Sgt. Chuck Casey of the OPD incident unit, who gave an update near the scene. Omaha Public Schools later confirmed in a statement that the injured boy is a second-grader from Springville?Elementary School, located near 60th and Girard streets, about five miles northwest of the incident.The boy's family was with him at the hospital, Casey said.Early reports indicated the boy was struck by the front of the bus — the only vehicle involved in the incident — but the scene will be under investigation for some time, he said."At this time, Omaha Public Schools administrators, Student Transportation of America and OPS Student Transportation are cooperating with the Omaha Police Department as they investigate the incident," according to a statement from OPS early Monday evening. "Administrators are also supporting and working with the family of the student."Casey said initial reports were that the boy was a passenger on the bus. One person was killed Tuesday and three others injured in an explosion in a medical building in Aliso Viejo, California, authorities said.The explosion blew out walls and windows, heavily damaging the first floor corner of the two-story building and hurling debris outside, said Capt. Tony Bommarito, a spokesman for the Orange County Fire Authority.Authorities have not found any explosive devices in the area, and Bommarito said there didn't appear to be a gas leak.FBI spokesman Mike Gifford said there was no initial indication of terrorism."We do not know at this time whether this was an intentional detonation of a device or whether it was an accident," said Orange County Sheriff's Department Commander Dave Sawyer, who added that officials are not ruling out anything.Sawyer said it appears the blast was concentrated in a suite on the first floor of the office building.The victim, who was killed, and the three survivors were likely close to the explosion, Sawyer said.He said investigators are interviewing the three survivors.Two survivors had critical injuries "that were consistent with an explosion, but not necessarily consistent with a bomb," said Carrie Braun, a spokeswoman for the Orange County Sheriff's Department.The sheriff's department is partnering with the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, who will assist the investigation, Sawyer said.Bommarito said firefighters responded to a call of an explosion shortly after 1 p.m. local time. (KGTV) - Loved ones are mourning the COVID-related death of an Oceanside grandfather who worked security on the Sprinter train.Matthys Kemp, 67, first became sick around mid-September."A cough and fever. Just thought he was coming down with a bug," said daughter Rinali HillNot long after, his symptoms got worse. Hill says on September 20th, he ended up in the ER."They admitted him. He had double pneumonia and COVID," said Hill.After two weeks on oxygen, Kemp was placed on a ventilator and sedated. He developed a blood clot in his leg and kidney issues.On November 1, Kemp, a father of two and grandfather of three, passed away."Just glad he's not in pain anymore," said a tearful Hill.Hill says her father was kind, generous and well-liked."He definitely had a huge smile and huge heart for everybody," said Hill.Hill says Kemp worked with the North County Transit District for the past decade, including the last five years for the contractor that provides security on the Sprinter train."He loved his job. Felt like he had a purpose, showing up every day in his vest. Felt like it was his Superman cape. Took pride in getting people to their destinations," said Hill.Hill isn't sure where her father contracted the virus, but says he was diligent about wearing a mask at work.His long-held wish, known to his family for years, was to have his body donated to science. Hill says when she reached out to local research facilities, they say it wouldn't be possible because of his COVID-19 diagnosis."That’s what he wanted and unfortunately we couldn’t do that for him," said Hill.Hill is now sharing her father's story, urging others to take precautions."Please wear a mask ... This virus can leave behind a family that can’t say goodbye in person, couldn't get hold their hand.
