SIRTE, Libya, March 27 (Xinhua) -- China expects that the Arab summit in Libya can coordinate the inter-Arab relations and make achievements in the Palestinian cause, a senior Chinese diplomat said here on Saturday."We hope the Arab countries could coordinate internal relations and achieve positive results in reconciliation among Palestinian factions as well as the resumption of Palestinian-Israeli talks at the summit," said China's Special Envoy to Middle East Wu Sike in an interview with Xinhua on the sidelines of the 22nd Arab Summit in the Libyan city of Sirte.As a special representative of Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, Wu attended the opening ceremony of the summit at the invitation of the Arab League Secretariat. BEIJING, June 2 (Xinhua) -- China opposes the U.S. decision to set final duties of up to more than 200 percent on imports of steel gratings from China, the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said in a statement Wednesday.This came after the U.S. Commerce Department Tuesday announced final anti-dumping duties of 136.76 to 145.18 percent on the gratings to "offset below-market pricing." It also set a countervailing duty of 62.46 percent.MOC said the United States had acted "discriminatorily" in the anti-dumping and anti-subsidy investigation and made the wrong conclusion, and China is dissatisfied and is opposed to this.Such move could hurt the interests of China, which both Chinese government and enterprises would not accept, the ministry said.China urged the U.S. to take effective measures to correct the mistake, it said.According to the U.S. trade remedy procedure, the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) will also make its final injury determination about the product soon.If the ITC makes affirmative final determinations that imports of steel gratings from China materially injure, or threaten material injury to, the domestic industry, the Commerce Department will issue anti-dumping duties and countervailing duties orders.In 2009, the United States imposed a series of trade remedy measures on Chinese products, and the value involved was eight times more than that in 2008, the MOC statement said."Such action not only hurts the interests of China, but also has an adverse impact on bilateral economic and trade ties," it said.China hoped the United States could show restraint in using trade remedy measures and act to fight trade protectionism, it said.

WUHAN, March 26 (Xinhua) -- China on Friday started building a canal from the middle section of the Yangtze River to a tributary that connects with China's South-North Water Diversion project.Costing more than six billion yuan (880 million U.S. dollars), the 67.23 km project will divert 3.1 billion cubic meters of water every year from Yangtze's Jingjiang section to the Hanjiang River, one of the major sources of water for north China once the diversion project is complete.China's South-North Water Diversion project is designed to divert water from the water-rich south to the dry north.The central part of the project will divert water from Danjiangkou Reservoir on the Hanjiang River to north China cities like Beijing and Tianjin.According to research by Hubei provincial environmental protection bureau, without water from the canal the Hanjiang River would only have one third of its average runoff once water is diverted, and the water level of middle and lower reaches of Hanjiang would drop by 0.5 meter.The canal, which will be completed in 2014, will prevent problems arising such as algae pollution if water levels were decreased dramatically, said Shen Xiaoli, an engineer with the Hubei Environmental Sciences Institute.The canal is expected to benefit about 8.9 million people and 43,000 hectares of farmland in the lower reaches of Hanjiang.Once completed the five to six meters deep canal could be used by ships weighing more than 1,000 tonnes, facilitating transportation of coal from the north to the south, said Xu Shaojun, head of the Hubei Provincial Investigation and Design Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower.
