Twice in the last week, the San Diego Loyal have walked off the soccer field in protest. Both times, one of their players was the recipient of a slur directed at them by the opponent. In their game against Phoenix Rising, Collin Martin was the target of an alleged homophobic slur."When I heard that I lost it," says Loyal Head Coach Landon Donovan. "Because I know what this team has gone through, I know how hard it was for them to even take the field."Wednesday night's incident comes following a game last week against LA Galaxy II, when a Loyal player was called a racial slur."For it to happen again a week later was just devastating for me," said Donovan. In both instances, the Loyal left the field in protest, and forfeited the game."Our players in the heat of the moment and the passion of the moment still wanted to play."The two losses cost them points in the standings, and a USL playoff spot."Listen, when we are all on our death bed no one is going to remember if we beat Phoenix 3 to 1 at home. No one is going to remember that, but they will remember that they stood up for something they believed in, and they supported their teammate. They supported what's right."As for the Phoenix Rising player accused of the homophobic slur, Junior Flemmings released a statement saying it was a false accusation by the Loyal, and he's very disappointed. Donovan says although his team will not be in the playoffs, he doesn't regret any of the actions his team took the last two games."I understand that most people watching from afar probably don't get it, but we've been living it." 1597

United Airlines announced Wednesday plans to return 25,000 flights systemwide during the month of August in hopes that more people will resume traveling. Despite the massive number of flights being added to the schedule, United said that it will only run 40% of the number of flights it ran in 2019 in August.Domestically, United plans on adding 600 flights, meaning it will run 48% of its US flights in August. United projects that only 30% of US flights will fly in July compared to 2019."We're taking the same data-driven, realistic approach to growing our schedule as we did in drawing it down at the start of the pandemic," said Ankit Gupta, United's vice president of Domestic Network Planning. "Demand is coming back slowly and we're building in enough capacity to stay ahead of the number of people traveling. And we're adding in flights to places we know customers want to travel to, like outdoor recreation destinations where social distancing is easier but doing so in a way that's flexible and allows us to adjust should that demand change."On Tuesday, Delta announced the addition of 1,000 flights systemwide in July. Delta said it reduced the number of flights in the US by 65% in July. 1208
US President Donald Trump says China has agreed to cut tariffs on cars it imports from the United States.Trump made the announcement in a tweet late Sunday in the United States, saying Beijing will "reduce and remove" the tariffs, which currently stand at 40%. He didn't specify when the change would happen or what the new tariff level would be.Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang declined to comment Monday on Trump's statement, referring questions to "the relevant authorities." The Chinese Commerce Ministry, which typically makes announcements regarding tariffs, didn't respond to a faxed request for comment.Trump's tweet comes after he and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed on Saturday to hold off on further tariffs in the trade war between the two countries for the time being. But the Chinese government has made no mention of cutting car tariffs as a result of the meeting between the two leaders in Buenos Aires.Xi announced in a speech in April that China would cut tariffs on imported cars this year. His government followed through on that promise three months later, reducing them from 25% to 15%.But just days later, it imposed new additional tariffs of 25% on American-made passenger vehicles, one of the groups of products it targeted early in the trade warwith the United States. The move has hurt the profits of major automakers like BMW (BMWYY) and Daimler (DDAIF), the owner of Mercedes-Benz. The German companies both ship SUVs to China from manufacturing plants in the United States.Shares in BMW jumped more than 6% on Monday morning in Frankfurt following Trump's tweet, while Daimler's stock leaped more than 5%.Tu Le, the head of research firm Sino Auto Insights, highlighted the lack of specifics in Trump's tweet. 1804
UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The U.N. health chief says positive results from coronavirus vaccine trials mean the world “can begin to dream about the end of the pandemic.” But the director-general of the World Health Organization says rich and powerful nations must not trample the poor and marginalized “in the stampede for vaccines.” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told the General Assembly’s first high-level session on the pandemic that while the virus can be stopped, “the path ahead remains treacherous.” Tedros said Friday that the pandemic has shown humanity at “its best and worst,” pointing to acts of compassion and scientific achievements but also “signs of self-interest, blame-shifting, and divisions.” 713
