SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Members of San Diego's Islamic community stood up Thursday in support of three women who were attacked in Little Italy.The women were wearing hijabs and walking down Columbia Street near Beech Sunday afternoon when a man approached from the other direction. Witnesses told 10News 50-year-old Kyle Allen lunged his shoulder into one of them.Allen was later arrested on suspicion of battery, making criminal threats, and weapon charges. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — After successive years of devastating wildfires, California's fire agency announced a plan Tuesday that would dramatically increase logging and other forest management efforts with the help of the National Guard.The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection released a list of 35 priority fuel-reduction projects it wants to start immediately across the state over roughly 90,000 acres. That's double the acreage the agency aimed to cover in the current fiscal year, CalFire Deputy Chief Scott McLean said.The agency is also seeking National Guard assistance to coordinate the work. They include work around the city of Redding, which was also devastated by wildfire last year, and in Butte County, where Paradise is located.An estimated 15 million acres of forest land in California are in need of thinning or other restoration work, so the 35 projects are just a start, Calfire officials said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) In light of the death of George Floyd in Minnesota, the Racial Justice Coalition of San Diego is calling for a ban on all neck restraints used by law enforcement officers."They are inhumane, they are improper," said Yusef Miller with the coalition.Miller has called on San Diegans to write to local leaders demanding a ban on any neck restraints still used by officers.It's called the I can't breathe campaign."Whether kneeling on a neck, which is unconscionable or putting them in a carotid restraint, we're saying to ban all those restraints," he explained.Under the San Diego Police Department's use of force policy, carotid restraints are approved.Officers are not allowed to use their knees.A chokehold cuts off a person's air supply and can be deadly, which is banned by SDPD.The carotid restraint instead cuts off the blood supply, which can knock a person unconscious but is considered less dangerous overall."The carotid restraint becomes the chokehold in the field, and people are killed in this manner," said Miller. "We want all neck restraints banned, not only in San Diego, not only statewide, but throughout the nation."The renewed call to action comes after a video posted to social media showed an officer in Minnesota kneeling on George's Floyd's neck, an unarmed black man."He never even flinched, he never stopped for a second, he didn't take any pressure off for even one second," said Walter Cameron with the group Showing Up for Racial Justice. San Diego (KGTV)- Parents at several San Diego County high schools have been notified that students could have been exposed to Pertussis, also known as whooping cough. Carlsbad High School confirmed two cases last week. Monday, parents at Mt. Carmel High School were notified that students at that school may have been exposed to the infection, though it wasn't clear how many confirmed cases there have been at the school. “This is probably the most contagious bacterial disease,” says Eric McDonald, with the county’s Health and Human Services Department. “For every one person who has it, when they expose people who have not had or been immunized, they can infect up to 16 or 17 other people.”McDonald says symptoms of a typical cold are a runny nose, low-grade fever, and a cough. For someone who may have pertussis “its the persistence of the cough that should be the number one clue.”So far this year, in San Diego County, there have been over 70 confirmed cases of pertussis. “The number of cases in San Diego are higher than most of California, particularly for infants under the age of four months.”If your child has a cough that lasts almost two weeks, they should be treated by a doctor. McDonald recommends everyone get the DTaP shot to lower the risk of getting pertussis, especially pregnant women in their third trimester. 1347
