RANCHO BERNARDO (KGTV)- A coyote with piping trapped around her neck is still suffering, much to the chagrin of neighbors and animal rescue organizations.Katie Ryan first noticed the mother coyote was in trouble April 15th. She has an outdoor camera that captures her side yard in the overnight hours and, prior to this, she's seen lots of animals travel through."We moved in a little over 3 1/2 years ago, and we had no idea that we were moving onto a pathway for all types of wildlife. We've had a raccoon on a nightly basis recently, one of my neighbors had deer, we've seen roadrunners," she said.Katie's worked tirelessly, monitoring the coyote from her window and calling organizations to get help. "[I'm] making sure she's safe and that no one's out trying to injure her more than she already is," she said. The Fund for Wildlife Animal Center, based in Ramona, brought out a large trap, filled it with bait, but the raccoons got to it before they could trap the coyote.Katie had them remove the trap last weekend after a week of no luck. Her hope is another rescue group will be able to trap the coyote Monday night."I want it humane, I don't want, I did talk with some people who... I was not happy with their trapping ideas because she's already in such bad condition," she said.Katie has grown so invested in the animal, she and her husband came up with a name for her, "because of the tubing around her neck, my husband and I were just joking around about it and we just said it reminds us, she looks like a turtle. So we called her Myrtle the Turtle."As time goes on, the situation becomes more desperate. Katie's pictures show how thin Myrtle's become over the past month and she's worried about Myrtle's pups."She's very cut up and could be septic at this point and I noticed she's starting to have problems with her hind legs and her hips," Katie said. "Just watching her try to move from A to B, is painful, it really actually gives me physical and mental pain to see her in that kind of distress."PETA has gotten involved, saying they want to help. The Fund for Wildlife Animal Center says they have room and experts ready to help once Myrtle's caught. If you find a wild animal, you are advised to not approach it, touch it or feed it, contact animal rescue personnel. 2343

Regardless of where you come down on the issue, the Oklahoma teacher walkouts have left working parents trying to come up with solutions for what to do with their kids now for almost two weeks.“It’s been very stressful,” said parent Lindsay Seal. “It is kind of hard to plan because you don’t know one day to the next.”Seal says she’s been getting updates from her son’s Jackson’s school in the form of a message on an app his teachers use. But the updates on whether school will remain closed for the next day don’t usually come until the night before.“We’ve had babysitters; we’ve hung out with grandparents,” Seal said, adding that it’s been tricky finding a place where her son Jackson can have fun and learn at the same time. Her solution for two days this week: the zoo.The Oklahoma City Zoo has traditionally operated day camps during summer months or on those certain school holidays when working parents don’t always have the day off. Deciding to run it during the walkout was a no-brainer for Amy Stephens, who is the zoo’s education supervisor.“We immediately knew there was a need,” Stephens said. “We had to pull the staffing together of course. But we have some wonderful people that worked our summer camp programs and out day camps throughout the year, and so they just jumped in.”Stephens says they have a different theme every day. On the day we stopped by, elementary students were learning about reptiles and getting to touch a blue-tongued skink, a type of lizard.“We are very education-driven, so we have a different theme every day,” Stephens said. “It might be meerkats or owls, or birds in general.”Signing up for a day at the zoo is for the day. But it’s far from the only education-focused option parents have.Science Museum Oklahoma has also been doing day-long camps for students at a similar price where kids can learn about the basics of chemistry, the solar system, even prehistoric fossils. For a cheaper option, parents can utilize the Boys and Girls Clubs of Oklahoma County for five dollars a day. Typically focused on after-school programming, the clubs have been open each day of the walkouts starting first thing in the morning.“We’re doing a lot of academic work knowing that when they get back to school they’re likely to have to do their state testing,” said Jane Sutter, CEO and president of Boys and Girls Clubs of Oklahoma County. “So we don’t want them to get rusty on those things.”Club staff have even been given lesson plans from some of the public schools.“Obviously it’s not a full day of school. They’re missing opportunity, and we’re sad about that,” Sutter said. “But we want to make this the best experience we possibly can for them.”Fourth and fifth graders at the clubs were playing U.S. geography trivia when we stopped in, while older students were learning about math through a web-based program called Prodigy. The city’s public schools system has also been sending out buses to various locations, including the Boys and Girls Clubs, and handing out sack lunches so the out of school kids that normally rely on the free school lunches won’t go hungry.Representatives at both the zoo and the Boys and Girls Clubs tell us they’ll continue their programs for as long as teachers remain out of the classrooms. The parents we spoke to admit that having to keep their kids occupied while they're at work is an inconvenience but told us that if it means a better education for their kids in the long run, it's a small sacrifice they're willing to make. 3519

President Donald Trump suggested during an interview on Wednesday that he will accept the presidential nomination of the Republican party in a live address from the White House later this month.During an interview on Fox News, Trump told anchors that his administration is still weighing its options, but that he's currently leaning toward an option that would have him deliver the speech "live from the White House lawn," calling it the "easiest and least expensive option."Trump also suggested Wednesday that the press would be allowed to attend parts of the convention that will be taking place in Charlotte. Last week, reports emerged that indicated that the administration was considering barring the press from the nomination vote. The Republican National Convention, currently slated to take place between Aug. 24 and Aug. 27, has been completely upended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The convention was originally slated to take place in Charlotte, North Carolina. However, Trump announced earlier this year that he would move portions of the convention to Jacksonville, Florida because he felt North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, a Democrat, was too slow to lift COVID-19 related lockdown restrictions. After cases began spiking at record levels in July, Trump mostly canceled the Jacksonville portion of the event."I looked at my team and I said the timing for this event is not right. It's just not right with what's been happening," Trump said on July 23. 1468

QUEEN CREEK, Ariz. — Conversations have been forced to change in children's classrooms. Many adults remember simply learning about a basic fire drill or what to do in a lockdown. But today, many teachers are having to teach kids what to do in case of an active shooter. Another safety net that is being used in places around Arizona, including Queen Creek Unified School District, is a donated, repurposed tool from the Queen Creek Fire and Medical Department: fire hoses. "They're cut into a certain segment. They are perfect to go over the hinges of our doors and that just adds this extra layer of security to our classroom," said Newell Barney Middle School science teacher Tammi Brewster. Brewster explained how the recycled and donated fire hoses from the fire department become a deterrent for any "bad guys" trying to get into a classroom and are now a part of their lockdown procedure called ALICE. ALICE stands for alert, lockdown, inform, counter and evacuate. Brewster said that the fire hose is part of a larger conversation with students regarding school shootings. It helps explain the procedure for active shooter or lockdown drills in a way that does not scare them, but empowers them. "It gives them a relief that, 'OK, all of this is going on in the news, in our society and I have choices I can make. I don't have to sit in a corner and be scared,' '' Brewster said. "The schools have their processes and their programs in place for a lockdown," said Queen Creek Fire Chief Vance Gray. "What we wanted to do was just assist by adding another layer of protection for the teachers and the students and the schools." Gray said his two children went to one of the schools where he has donated these fire hoses. While it is a piece of equipment he never hoped he would have to pass out, he knows taking action is the only thing to do. "If you can't change the way things are and make them exactly how you want them to be, then the best thing you can do is prepare," Gray said. He said they will continue donating their fire hoses whenever they go out of service.  2169
