(KGTV) - A Jamul couple made a heartbreaking return to what remains left of their home, destroyed by the Valley Fire.Late Saturday afternoon, Irving and Anita Beeman shot cellphone video from the back yard of their home on West Boundary Truck Trail."The smoke blowing straight above our our house, so I knew we were in big trouble," said Irving Beeman.The fire seemed a good four to five miles away, but that changed quickly."In about 15 seconds, it went over a quarter mile ... The flames were between 100 and 200 feet tall," said Irving.Irving scrambled to a ridge and peered over."Looked like waterfall of fire from the top of the ridge to the bottom of the valley. A wind vortex or something took it straight down to valley floor," said Irving.Anita left first, while Irving left in another vehicle soon after. The couple only had time to load up what amounted to a truck bed of belongings. A photo taken by Irving shows his property, as it began burning."We watched it catch fire and then tore out of there," said Irving.The next day, the couple got back to their property, and their fears were realized. Their home of 20 years was no more. One of their trucks and their son's van were destroyed."Just devastating. Still had been holding out hope," said Anita.Buried under the remains of their home, were boxes containing the ashes of Anita's parents. In the rush, it didn't get packed."In the middle of night, you think of things that are gone, things you couldn’t save," said Anita."I would wake up and saw her crying. Just hugged her. Not much you can say. Just about everyone who's played with a projectile toy has gotten a version of the warning "You'll shoot your eye out!"But in a report published Monday in the medical journal BMJ Case Reports, doctors warn that popular toy Nerf guns really can put eyes at risk.The case report details three unrelated cases within three months treated in the Moorfields Eye Hospital accident and emergency department in London. Two adult patients had pooling of blood and inflammation in the eye after being shot with a Nerf gun. One 11-year-old patient had pooling of blood, inflammation and damage to the outer retinal layers of the eye."Significant Nerf gun ocular injuries are not reported in the literature, as far as we know," the researchers write.In the emergency room at the eye hospital, doctors are used to attending to traumatic injuries. It was the extent of the injury from a children's toy that surprised Dr. Mukhtar Bizrah, the lead author of the study."Nerf guns are used by children, and I was not expecting to see blood," he said. All the patients complained of blurred vision and red eyes and were treated to reduce pressure inside the eye, and their symptoms resolved after a few weeks.Injuries to the cornea are common and are not that dangerous, Bizrah said, but the injury sustained in the space between the iris and the pupil is far more dangerous. "One of the patients had angle recession, which is a risk factor for developing glaucoma down the line," he said.All the injuries documented in the case study involved Nerf guns shot from a close distance.One of the patients had been shot by "bullets" from an unlabeled brand, which have firmer heads than branded ones, the researchers said, noting that unbranded bullets are cheaper and tend to be preferred by parents. However, the authors said they could not verify whether branded bullets would have had caused less trauma.Julie Duffy, senior vice president for global communications for Nerf's maker, Hasbro Inc., wrote in an email that Nerf foam darts and foam rounds are not hazardous when used properly. She also recommends using eye protection all the time when playing with such toys.Patients with these kinds of eye injuries have to be monitored for the first week to ensure that there is no rebleeding, said Dr. Cate Jordan of Nationwide Children's Hospital. If pain and blood clotting persists, the entire anterior chamber has to be washed out. Jordan recommends the patient lay low and participate only in quiet activities for the first few weeks. KFC is running out of ... chicken?The fast food chain has been forced to temporarily close hundreds of restaurants in the United Kingdom after a logistics snafu stopped chicken deliveries.About 800 of the company's roughly 900 locations in Britain were closed as of midday on Monday. Some had opened for business by the afternoon, according to the company's website.KFC, which is owned by Taco Bell and Pizza Hut parent Yum!, said the chicken shortage had been caused by a "couple of teething problems" with its new delivery partner, DHL."We won't compromise on quality, so no deliveries has meant some of our restaurants are closed, and others are operating a limited menu, or shortened hours," KFC said in a statement.DHL acknowledged that a number of its deliveries had been "incomplete or delayed" because of "operational issues."
