SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man was arrested Sunday morning after police say he crashed into a police car during a chase in La Mesa.The crash happened around 1 a.m. on Spring Street and University Avenue. Police say they were called to an area bar when a man involved in a fight got into his car and drove away.The chase was brief and ended when the suspect struck the police car. The driver was taken into custody for weapons charges and driving under the influence, police say.No one was injured in the crash. 513

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A growing group in San Diego is flipping the script on those who fight dense development in their own backyards.They're calling themselves the 'YIMBY' Democrats. YIMBY for "yes in my backyard." Their solution is for more dense development in urban areas where people can live and work. They also seek legislative reform and developments that help combat climate change."It's basic supply and demand," said member Dike Anyiwo. "The more sort of inventory that we're able to produce and build and create, then it stands to reason that prices should go down."RELATED: MISD: Granny flat permits soarTheir ideas appear to be gaining traction. The city recently passed Mayor Kevin Faulconer's plan eliminating parking requirements near transit centers. And the YIMBYs are getting visits from some key politicians, including Assemblyman Todd Gloria, City Councilmembers Monica Montgomery and Chris Ward, and County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher. Plus, some of its members are now landing spots on city planning groups. Anyiwo is now on the Midway Pacific Highway Community Planning Group. Still, concerns remain that the YIMBY plans could lead to too much crowding for the city's infrastructure. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Hillcrest man was left feeling helpless after he spots a burglar inside his home on Christmas Eve while he was on the other side of the country. Tyler Luna was visiting family in Mississippi when he wanted to check on a recent gift from a client. He got a red flower that is supposed to bloom on Christmas. Before he left, he set up surveillance cameras and placed the flower in a window nearby. He opened the app on his phone and saw the flower and a thief inside his home."Your heart sinks and its like what’s happening," Luna said. In a panic, Luna called 911 but the Mississippi dispatchers told him they couldn’t help. He flew home Christmas night and met with police immediately to file a police report. "It was very scary."When he went inside his home he found his class ring missing, his watch drawer empty of all watches, and some valuables in his nightstand, all gone. Luna tells 10News he feels violated and unsafe in his own home. 973

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A partnership with the United Way and the San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council pulled off a donation drive-through at SDCCU Stadium Tuesday morning that served 500 families in need.Cars holding vouchers from the various unions represented by the council lined up and proceeded through the assembly line, loading up with food and toys donated by their fellow workers.Every year, thousands of union workers make a monthly donation from their paychecks to assist their fellow working families and community members in need. This year's recipients included fire victims and other families identified by several non-profit partners, according to representatives with the Labor Council."You've got electricians and teachers out here helping school bus drivers and janitors and security guards, those who have fallen on hard times and need a little extra help," says Keith Maddox with the Labor Council.Holding two events, one in San Diego and the other in Imperial County, 650 families total were served by the annual donation drive.Feeding San Diego helps procure the food for the drive, according to Unions United/United Way of San Diego County President and CEO Nancy Sasaki. 1209

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new pilot program in San Diego hopes to break the barrier between older adults and ridesharing apps. Together, Jewish Family Service (JFS) and the Ed Brown Center are testing an outreach and education program connecting older adults with free ridesharing services so they can participate in health and wellness programs.The pilot program is part of a partnership with Lyft and the National Council on Aging (NCOA). The Ed Brown Center was one of three senior centers selected from across the country.The goal is to understand whether ridesharing can improve an older adult’s well-being by enabling them to travel to their local senior center to take part in activities such as health classes, nutrition programs, lifelong learning, and social opportunities.JFS partnered with Lyft two years ago to provide rides to seniors and individuals receiving breast cancer treatment. Called “On the Go: Navigator,” the program allows older adults to easily book rides to the grocery store, doctor’s appointments and more, without a smartphone. With this service, seniors must pay for the trip, as well as a service fee.
