SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When a series of suspicious fires pop up and arson is suspected, law enforcement officials across California have a handy tool that could help track down or rule out potential suspects.“In California there’s a criminal arson registry put on by the California Department of Justice,” said San Diego Police Sgt. Rick Pechin with the Metro Arson Strike Team. “What that registry does is keep track of all arson registrants in the state of California.”The registry is similar to the Megan’s Law database, but it is not available for the public to access. “It’s a law enforcement computer database only,” said Pechin.RELATED: Video shows arsonist suspected of setting Ocean Beach, Point Loma firesOnce someone is convicted of the crime of arson, they must add their name and address to the registry 14 days after they get out of jail or prison. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two hundred elementary students are now the proud owners of new bikes, thanks to inmates at the Donovan Correctional Facility.For the fourth year, the Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Center teamed up with the correctional facility to make the event happen. The inmates raised over ,000 to pay for the bikes and accessories, with some donating money they earn working. “Certain decisions got me where I am, but better decisions that I made since then put me exactly where I am, in the fire department and on my way out the door,” said prison inmate, Andrew Breckenridge.Breckenridge was one of two inmates invited to attend that actual event at the Kroc Center. He’s being released from prison in 10 days. “It feels great, I mean I can’t describe the feeling, seeing the smiles on these kids faces,” said Breckenridge.Children who received bikes were chosen based on merit and good behavior at school. 933

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Unintentional fentanyl overdose deaths increased by nearly 70 percent in 2019, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner. From January through June of 2019, 69 people died from the overdoses, compared to 41 during the same time period in 2018. The number indicates a 68 percent jump, the report shows. And the illicit drug makers don’t have the kind of quality control measures that pharmaceutical companies have either,” Campman added.Until now, San Diego has been behind a national trend of increasing opioid deaths, but that’s changing, Chapman said. “This is how we are seeing the opioid epidemic here, mostly in the rise in fentanyl deaths.” 1847

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- When entering most newly reopened businesses in San Diego County, customers will need to sign in with their name and phone number.The change only applies to businesses now offering indoor services; the county’s public health order was updated to reflect the changes now in effect for the following sectors:Hair Salons & BarbershopsPersonal Care ServicesGyms & Fitness CentersRestaurants, Wineries, Bars, Breweries, and Distilleries that serve food.“It’s a very modest step that can aide in our close contact investigation, and I think can help slow the spread and help these businesses stay open,” said County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher.Many people already give their name and phone number when making a reservation at a restaurant or booking a hair appointment; this won’t look much different, just more widespread, and businesses will also keep the sign-in sheets for three weeks.“In the event, there is an outbreak or exposure, I think most people would want to know if they’ve been exposed so they can quarantine or potentially get tested,” said Fletcher.If a COVID-19 outbreak happens, customers who visited will be notified if they were possibly exposed. The county will not collect or save the information.“It would only be used in the event there was a public health risk,” said Fletcher.Fletcher said the new plan could have possibly helped with contact tracing during the last wave or reopenings.“It’s certainly something we could have been done before, maybe a lesson learned from earlier, I think this could really aide in helping more quickly in letting folks know if they’ve been exposed," Fletcher said.Some people may have privacy concerns and be reluctant to give their personal information.Cybersecurity expert Ted Harrington, who is an executive partner at Independent Security Evaluators, says that while giving an email address would feel less invasive, the risk of providing a phone number and name is still minimal.“There’s no doubt what this order is doing is giving more information for people who don’t yet have a process to safely protect it, so we should accept that is the reality of what’s happening,” said Harrington. “But, is that a strong enough reason to not go to a restaurant or get your haircut or whatever? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County residents can now watch for wildfires without ever going outside.  San Diego Gas and Electric introduced “Alert SDG&E Cameras” Tuesday.  The public website allows anyone to watch live video streamed from any of 15 cameras placed on top of the county’s highest peaks.“This is a game changer for San Diego and the communities that we serve,” said SDG&E COO Caroline Winn.“Alert SDG&E Cameras” is a collaboration with UC San Diego and the Seismology Lab at the University of Nevada, Reno.“We’re about getting the information out to those who want it,” said Winn. “It’s important that these are shared assets.”SDG&E meteorologists monitor the cameras, which can spin 360-degrees, zoom in to a fire, and can alert fire officials when there’s smoke. 814
