A new report from the Government Accountability Office released Thursday criticizes the federal government for sending out .4 billion in stimulus payments to dead people.The independent watchdog report says the Treasury and IRS sent almost 1.1 million payments totaling nearly .4 billion to deceased individuals around the country.“IRS announced that if a payment was issued to a deceased or incarcerated individual, the total amount should be returned,” read the report. “However, the IRS does not currently plan to take additional steps to notify ineligible recipients on how to return payments.”The GAO is an independent investigative agency that reports its findings to CongressThe agency found that the IRS failed to access death records maintained by the Social Security Administration before sending out the payments.“Typically, IRS uses third-party data, such as the death records maintained by the SSA to detect and prevent erroneous and fraudulent tax refund claims,” read the report. “However, Treasury and IRS did not use the death records to stop payments to deceased individuals for the first three batches of payments because of the legal interpretation under which IRS was operating.”J. Tilden, who lives near Indianapolis, was surprised when he got a ,200 paper check in the mail for his mother, Lillian. Lillian’s death certificate shows she died on Jan. 12, 2018 at the age of 73."So I was surprised and immediately thought about how this was potentially something that was a fraud," Tilden said. A pre-teen's basketball shot from beyond the arc was good for more than just a few points in Springfield.Springfield police say a group of ten-to-twelve-year-old kids helped them catch a suspected burglar on the run. It all started after officers responded to a call for a burglary. Police say they received reports that a 50-year-old male had just broken into a garage and stole several items, including two weed trimmers before taking off on a bike. He dropped the lawn tools after encountering police and rode awat. According to a post from the Springfield Police Department, the first officer followed him in his patrol car until backup arrived and started chasing him on foot.That's where the young All-Stars come into play.  Police say the kids were playing basketball nearby and one of them "threw a basketball across the roadway at the suspect, striking him, causing him to wreck his bicycle in the grass."Officers were then able to book the suspect into custody for burglary.  1033

A US service member and a member of the UK armed forces were killed in an improvised explosive device attack in the Manbij area of Syria on Thursday.A US official with knowledge of the initial reports from the battlefield told CNN the American had been killed.The UK Ministry of Defence confirmed the British death in a statement saying the soldier was embedded with US forces on a counter ISIS operation when the incident occurred."The family has been notified and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time," the British statement continued.Two members of the US-led coalition in Syria were killed and five were wounded in the attack, the coalition said. A Maryland woman says she failed a drug test the day she gave birth to her daughter and was reported to state social workers, all because she ate a poppy seed bagel for breakfast.WBAL-TV in Baltimore reports that Elizabeth Eden ate a poppy seed bagel for breakfast on the morning of April 4. She went into labor later that day and went to St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson to deliver her daughter.However, while she was in labor, a doctor told her she had tested positive for opiates.Poppy seeds come from the same plant which is used to make opium, heroin and other drugs, so it's common for drug tests to pick up on trace amounts of opiates.However, while the federal government measures a positive test at 2,000 nanograms a milliliter, St. Joseph Medical Center measures a positive test at 300 nanograms a milliliter. The hospital says the lower threshold for a positive test means they can treat more children born with drugs in their system — the Baltimore Sun reports that the number of babies born with drugs in their systems increased by 56.6 percent between 2006 and 2015. Eden says the hospital refused to release her daughter to her for five days following the false positive. She also says she was assigned a caseworker, who promptly dropped the case when learning of her breakfast on the morning of April 4.Eden isn't alone.
