Not too long ago, to keep him company, a friend brought him a boy cat named Fluffy.Over the first few weeks they had together, Williams says he and Fluffy hit it off right away.“I looked at him and hey, I just fell in love with him,” said Williams.As it’s safe to say we all do with our pets, Williams talked to Fluffy quite a lot. When the senior got calls on his cellphone, he’d joke around with Fluffy then too.“The phone would ring, and I would say ‘ring-a-ding,’” said Williams. “And I didn’t know he’d pick up on it.”Then, a few days ago, Williams slipped and fell getting out of the shower. He couldn’t move.“My arm was pinned under me, and the hours kept going by,” said Williams. “16 hours…”From roughly 8 a.m. until midnight later that day, Williams laid in agony. The door was closed, and his Life Alert was in the other room on the charger. His phone was in the bathroom with him, but just out of reach on the counter.Lucky for Williams, Fluffy was in the room too. And whether or not he knew it, he’d been training Fluffy for this moment accidentally.“So I said ‘ring-a-ding Fluffy, you’re my only hope,’” Williams said, tearing up. “And he was. It wasn’t even five minutes later I felt something hit my hand. And I’m here because of it.”The cat had brought Williams his phone and he was able to dial 911.“I relive it a million times. What if he wouldn’t have been in there with me? I’d be dead today,” he added.Now Williams, who served with the U.S. Army in Korea, is fine – left only with some soreness and bumps and bruising. Tens of thousands of children around the country will be getting a holiday puppy this year, but others will end up empty-handed and disappointed, ripped off by a puppy scam that has only gotten worse during the pandemic.So before you start looking for one, we have the warning signs a cute pup you find for sale is really a scam to steal your heart and your money.Penny Lloyd wanted to buy her kids a Yorkshire Terrier puppy -- a Yorkie -- for their home this Christmas."It was going to be a Christmas gift," she said.She found an ad on Facebook offering discount puppies."I saw this advertisement on Facebook, and I opened up the app and it said 'Yorkies for sale, half price, originally ,400 on sale for 0.'"It was a great price; so, she messaged the seller."I did, but I never got any response," Lloyd said.It's probably a good thing she never heard back, according to the Better Business Bureau, which says there is a good chance it was a scammer who would have asked for a deposit.That is what happened to Jo Standridge last year. She wired 0 via Western Union to a website -- now gone -- called Best Mini Shnauzers.com.That was the end of the seller, and of her puppy dreams."I tried to text him numerous times after that," she said. "Called him, couldn't get through. That was the end of the communications. Nothing."Puppy scam worsens during pandemicThe puppy scam has been around for more than five years, but the BBB says this year it's getting worse because so many people want either a "pandemic puppy" or a holiday puppy.Sara Kemerer of the Better Business Bureau said real puppy photos get reposted at counterfeit websites."It's very easy for scammers to steal a video or picture of a pet from the internet to make the pet seem real," she said.But the pups are always out of town, and the seller will ask hundreds of dollars for shipping and insurance.Once you wire them the money, they and their ad disappear.How to protect yourselfSo what can you do? Kemerer says ask for video of the seller with the pup. The birthday party for a 5-year-old Davenport, Iowa boy turned into one he’ll never forget when several officers from the Davenport Police Department accepted his invitation to attend.Jackie Martin took to Facebook to share the story of her son, Brayden, and his love for police officers. According to Martin, he loves everything about them, so it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise when Brayden decided he wanted to have a police officer-themed birthday party this year.Brayden personally delivered invitations to the police station in hopes of getting to see a squad car.But what he got in return was so much more.Over the course of the day, seven different officers made their way to Brayden’s party. Detective Donnie Pridemore even brought a pin-on badge with him and Brayden was pinned an official junior officer of the Davenport Police Department.“They went above and beyond to make my son feel like part of the team and really made today so special and allowed us the opportunity to continue to show Brayden the importance of respecting the law and those who uphold it,” said Martin, “they may not wear capes but today, they were definitely the heroes.”Check out the full post from Jackie: 1206
