The U.S. reached another bleak milestone in the COVID-19 pandemic Wednesday, as Johns Hopkins University reports that 150,000 Americans have now died of the virus.By comparison, about 116,000 Americans died in World War I, according to Encyclopedia Britannica All recorded U.S. deaths have come in the span of just under six months. The U.S. continues to lead the world in deaths linked to the coronavirus. Brazil, with a death toll of about 88,000, is currently the only other country with more than 50,000 deaths. The U.S. currently has more than 4.3 million confirmed cases of the virus, also the most among all world nations. In recent days, the U.S. has seen daily confirmed cases drop slightly, following several consecutive days of near-record case increases. The spread of the virus in hotspots like Arizona, Florida and Texas appears to be slowing. However, Dr. Anthony Fauci — the nation's top expert on infectious diseases — says he is concerned that hotspots could begin moving to Midwest states. Cases are beginning to tick up in places like Missouri, Nebraska and Colorado. 1091

The White House declined to comment Friday about a purported remark about Sen. John McCain by a communications staffer."I'm not going to comment on an internal staff meeting," press secretary Sarah Sanders said of Kelly Sadler's remark that McCain, who is being treated for brain cancer, is "dying."Sanders confirmed Sadler still works at the White House. On Thursday, Sadler, a special assistant who handles surrogate communications, told other staffers that McCain's opposition to President Donald Trump's CIA director nominee, Gina Haspel, does not matter because "he's dying anyway," a White House official told CNN. 627
The South Georgia Islands might not be permanently populated by humans, but it is an important sanctuary for penguins, seals and other various creatures in the South Atlantic. But a giant iceberg, A68a, could threaten the wildlife on the islands, according to the Government of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands. With the assistance of the Royal Air Force, the government has been tracking the iceberg’s movement toward the islands. While the islands do not have a permanent population, they are visited by tourists and others.According to the BBC, A68a was 150 kilometers from South Georgia. The concern is the iceberg could disrupt breeding for penguins on the island.“We are now entering the key part of the year for breeding," Mark Belchier, director of fisheries and environment for the government of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands, told BBC News."The nests have been built for gentoo penguins, and eggs will be laid soon. And the first seal pups have been born in the last fortnight," he added. The islands used to be populated on a more permanent basis as a small settlement ran a whaling station. Before air travel, the islands were used by explorers to prepare for treks to Antarctica. Whalers on the island also played a key role rescuing Sir Earnest Shackleton’s crew after his expedition became stranded on Antarctica’s Elephant Island. 1381
The reveal of the all-new Bronco lineup will now happen on Monday, July 13. This is instead of July 9. We are sensitive and respectful to some concerns raised previously about the date, which was purely coincidental.— Ford Motor Company (@Ford) June 19, 2020 266
