DENVER — Stepping into the unknown takes a profound sense of courage. During the novel coronavirus pandemic, there are a lot of unknowns, particularly when it comes to a vaccine.Across the country and around the world, there are dozens of vaccine trials underway as researchers race to find an end to the pandemic.In the U.S., two of those vaccine trials are showing early promising results. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccine trials are showing an above 90% efficacy rate.In Colorado, roughly 270 volunteers signed up for the Moderna vaccine trial through UC Health, including Michael Rouse.“There was a call out for minorities, especially African-Americans, and I felt it was time that we stepped up so I volunteered,” Rouse said. “It wasn’t a tough decision at all. I have faith in science. I have faith in medicine.”Rouse is a 66-year-old retiree who says he understands the hesitancy people of color have, but he believes it’s important for them to be involved in this vaccine trial to prove it’s safe.“Without people stepping up, we’re never going to find a solution,” Rouse said. “Our participation is what’s going to help save millions of lives.”Rouse said he received his first COVID-19 vaccine on Aug. 17 and his second shot a month later. He didn’t feel any initial pain or soreness from the injection.However, several hours afterward he did feel aches, nausea, a headache and a sour stomach that lasted for roughly 12 hours the first time and 24 hours the second time. Because of these side effects, Rouse is convinced he received the real vaccine and not a placebo.Now, he checks in about once a week using a mobile app on his phone to answer questions about his experience.“We have to do something to stop this because it’s getting out of control and like any vaccine, there is going to be some symptoms or some side effects, but we need this vaccine because this pandemic is just getting worse. The virus itself is not going to just disappear,” Rouse said. “I definitely think it’s going to be a defining moment in the world and those of us who can help find a solution should be proud of the fact that we helped find a solution to this defining moment.”Despite this, Rouse said he is still being cautious, wearing a mask in public, social distancing and staying home whenever possible.“I’m living as if I didn’t get the shot but I’m not afraid to go out and do things,” Rouse said.In an effort to educate the public about his experience and reassure them that the vaccine is safe, Rouse recently wrote a guest commentary talking about his experience with the vaccine.He hopes that once a vaccine does come out, his experience and that of the hundreds of other volunteers will encourage people to get it."I think it’s so important that we get positive news out about the vaccine. DALLAS (AP) — The Federal Aviation Administration said Wednesday it has granted Southwest Airlines approval to begin flights between California and Hawaii, capping the airline's effort to extend its reach 2,400 miles (3,800 kilometers) across the Pacific.The Dallas-based airline's chief operating officer, Mike Van de Ven, said Southwest will announce timing for selling tickets and beginning flights in the coming days.The FAA will increase oversight of Southwest for the first six months, an agency spokesman said, adding that the additional monitoring is standard practice.RELATED: Lower fares to Hawaii offered following Southwest Airlines successful test flightSouthwest plans to launch flights to four of the Hawaiian islands, including Oahu, where Honolulu is located. DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) - It’s the first day of Bing Crosby winter horse racing at the Del Mar Racetrack and fans are making their way through the gates. Race officials say safety, for riders and horses, is the top priority for everyone. The Bing Crosby season is 15 days shorter than the summer season. Trainers say the Del Mar track is one the best because of San Diego's weather. "This track, especially in the fall, is the safest dirt track in the world," says trainer Bob Hess. Some politicians even suggested suspending racing there. "It's tens of thousands of jobs. It's a billion-dollar industry," says Harper. DEL MAR (KGTV) — A historic summer season at the Del Mar racetrack is wrapping up Monday, the first season without fans in the stands in the track’s history.But even with all the changes forced by the pandemic, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club says summer 2020 was a success.With no fans in attendance, the Thoroughbred Club says it missed out on about million in concessions and other on-track revenue this season. However, that was offset by lower staffing costs and an uptick in gambling revenue, according to Craig Dado, the club’s chief marketing officer.“We’re really happy with the numbers we’re getting and we will be able to eek out a small profit this year,” Dado said.Gambling revenues jumped about 7 percent thanks to off-track activity, Dado said, which is where the vast majority of bets are typically placed anyway. Anyone can bet on a Del Mar race using an app.“Basketball was delayed. Baseball was delayed, so a lot of people turned to horse racing, and we’re happy they did,” he said.The season had its hurdles. In July, the track canceled a weekend of racing after 15 jockeys and seven other workers tested positive for COVID-19.Last weekend, a horse was hurt during racing and had to be put down, the first death during racing at Del Mar since 2018.“To only have one in two racing seasons is a phenomenal number and we will definitely be the safest track in North America, as we have been the last two years,” Dado said.Dado attributed the track’s safety record to protocols adopted three years ago.But there are still questions about the kinds of pandemic protocols that will be in place when the November season begins.“At this point, we have no idea what’s going to happen in November,” he said. “Things are starting to open up in San Diego County.
